Naija's movement and body components
« on: February 13, 2008, 02:08:00 pm »
Hi all,
I am new to the forum and to the game too.
I am playing the demo right now, and I would like to give just my two cents.

The game istelf is neraly PERFECT.

I think it should be useful to add map notations. To help tracking undone actions and undiscovered map portions.
But the real thnig i would like to suggest (we are in the modding section after all) is to let Naija bend her torso.
Sorry if it has already been posted, I searched for it but I didn't find anything.

Naija's movements are simply magnificent (one of the best I've ever seen since Prince of Persia Era ;)) but the sensation I miss while watching her doing evolutions and sudden direction changes, is to see bending her torso backward and forward.

I saw the scripts and the .gif's of the sprite, and I think it would be possible (but I have no idea how to do that, sincerely).

I could be mad... in fact I don't know even how an amphibious anthropomorphous lady-creature would behave and move! ;)

Sorry if I posted in the wrong section.

Cheers.

Heh heh. A "naija bends her body as she swims" mod eh? Sounds cool. Would probably make it look a little smoother and more realistic as she swims, if it was done well.

I'm not really one to make a mod at the moment, but I'm sure someone with more scripting knowledge might appear that wants to try this.

Happy to see my idea is appreciated! ;-)

I think the best (and simplest) way to achive this is to split the torso image in two part at waist.

Yeah, I like the idea too, but not really that nessescary, and propably too much trouble too. There need to be alot new animations and propably even update every sprite/character with that effect.

And the map thing has been pointed out several times. =p

Well I for once really like that idea.  But it would require extensive re-animation of every Naija sprite.  Li too if you really want to be thorough.

Like I said you'd propably have to change every humanoid sprite to keep it right. So I think this isn't ever going to happen. Not in a update anyway. When people make mods, while starting from scratch, they might add this as a extra bone and making new animations.

Well yeah, its not gonna be put into the game itself. But it could be done as a mod right? Just would be more work than re-drawing all the current sprites. ;)

well, actually I've tried it, sortof, not in the game but with simple sprites and I noticed that you get awefully looking "bends" in her back if you do so, I know know how the sprite should exactly look, but I don't think that it looks ok if her back is broken.
But that could also just be me having it rotated too far. I think this idea is and stays an idea.

Well maybe there are some videos on youtube of various "mermaid" type creatures?  Like look at clips from the little mermaid or something.  Of course they had to use something for reference too, so maybe look at fish and dolphins?  I know it's too big a project for me to ever consider.

As far as I know the movement of the torso is very subtle, so I guess that's why it's not included in Aquaria - too much hassle. May sound stupid, but think about it; you already need to make so many graphics and such and then you add another thing that's just there to make Naija and other humanoids more realistisc by subtle things that require lots of work. Also, most of the times you won't be that close to Naija so it will annoy you.

It would be a nice idea for a mod, but we first need to find someone who is willing to do this.
Just when we thought we've seen everything...

Sorry to resurrect such an old post, but I would like to know if someone is still interested in this mod.

I tried to figure out which part of the body were affected by a bending torso movement, and separated the body into three pieces: http://www.filedropper.com/newnaija-body

I haven't studied the code yet, but I am sure any modder skilled enough is able to work it out easily.

Obviously the changes shuold be made on all Naija's bodies... but that would be the lesser effort, since I photoshopped these three images in less then 10 minutes.
