Lag in game.
« on: July 07, 2011, 06:33:20 am »
So I just bought the game, and right after the BitBlot logo it gets incredibly laggy, I have no idea what could be causing it. This happens both in my Intel Q9400 CPU, RadeonHD 5770 GPU pc, and my netbook with a fusion APU (so you have an idea this netbook runs Portal 2 without a problem).

Even more curious is that the task manager shows almost no CPU usage on both systems. Both systems have their drivers up to date, could there be some problem with the Steam version?

Try the community build. If it is really a problem with Steam, you'll know for sure if the community build works. I don't think I had any problems with Aquaria on Steam (other than it's not available there for Mac).

What OS are you using?

Also, maybe its an ATI/AMD Radeon common thingy. Try disabling Catalyst AI if you haven't already, heard it messes up big time in some cases. Even got Aquaria to run on an 800 MHz Pentium 3 with some crap card, so the graphics are by far not demanding and don't need any AI optimization for sure.

In case GMMan's suggestion doesn't work out, can you post you usersettings.xml here to have a look?

And in general, i really recommend using the community builds. You won't have steam stuffs then, but who needs this bloated piece of software anyways. :P ::)

Regarding the community build, can I have a link for it?

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Home Premium on both systems, how exactly could I disable the Catalyst AI? nevermind, found it.

I disabled it but the problem is still there.

Thanks for the help btw :3

This is the link to the community builds. As you can see, it's about three months old. My development toolchain is always screwing up, so I never got the chance to update it. Note the icculus versions are before the achurch merge, and not much has happened for a long time before the merge. That means the icculus version is closer to the original source than the achurch versions.

There's also False.Genesis' build, with his experimental mod selection page, found here. His build contains all the patches post-achurch merge. I would recommend you use his build, because it's more up to date.

Note that with any non-Steam version of the executable you won't get Steam features, namely Steam achievements (achievements will still appear, in a more ugly form, but it won't be committed to your profile on Steam. Also, Steam might try to "repair" the game by placing its old build back, so when you run the game don't do it from Steam.

Uh oh. If you do, be sure to look out for updates here and there, as said in the other topic, this build is highly experimental, and likes to go kaboom, especially when quitting.
I'll update that from time to time and eventually throw out an update for everyone, when its done, stable, and tested enough.

Something else random i found related to your problem:
I bought this great game today and had the same graphic issue, but I found how to fix it or at least it worked for me.

My graphic card is also x1950xtx so this surely is x1xxx problem or just ati driver problem.

But about the fix, I tried every settings both game's and catalyst's.

So these are the configs that worked for me:

On catalyst 3D:
  • set every setting to " use application settings"
  • disable catalyst A.I.
  • mipmap detail level: performance
  • wait for vertical sync: Off, unless aplication specifiec
  • adaptive anti-aliasing: off
  • Triple buffering: off

For the game settings: enable Vsync and frame buffer effects.

You can also try decreasing resolution or try windowed, but for me the game's default settings worked fine after setting catalyst right.

Hope this helps people who still have old ati card :)

But this post is kinda old and probably outdated.

For the record, i never had problems running the game, it was *almost* playable on that 800 MHz machine, and it ran fine everywhere else, including an older Pentium4 machine, another old Pentium 4 Prescott one with an Ati all-in-wonder-something, my C2D/GF8800GTS Desktop, and my C2D/GF9800M GTS Notebook.
You have really bad luck it seems...

Eh, tried disabling framebuffer effects? Thats the only thing that costs a lot of performance, besides the screen resolution.

EDIT: Don't forget posting your config! xD
