Updating Aquaria
« on: April 04, 2011, 05:13:50 pm »
Hi, I recently bought Aquaria and was wondering: since I downloaded version 1.1.1 (the one we get when buying the windows version), how can I update auqaria?

I read there's a version 1.1.3 (and maybe 1.1.4): should I just download the latest build and copy/paste to my aquaria folder? Or are there other steps ?

And if I want to use Linux binaries that I compiled myself, Aquaria should be up to date, or ... ?

[ EDIT: If someone build the binaries from sources and use it with data from the open-beta, what will they be missing ? ]

Putting new binaries into the aquaria main folder should be enough to get it to run (but backup your old ones + usersettings.xml!)
Depending on which version you use, you may have to update your script files as well (for achurch's PSP version). I recommend doing so, as some bugs have been fixed there as well.
There is a few data missing, most noticeable is that achievements (which have been added after 1.1.1) have no name and no text, but apart from that, the game runs well. Not seen other problems so far, but haven't played it through completely with my own build.

If you have problems with AQConfig messing with your settings (like disabling the controls, making aquaria choke and crash), rename it to something else, and edit the user€settings.xml file by hand.

Btw: Mods are not (yet) working with achurch's version. The 1.1.4 version that was mentioned in another post is a rough plan to get order in the chaos, and end the versions/build mess, which is hard to keep track of for casual users.

Its the same on linux.
Hope that answers your questions.

Thanks False.Genesis . It does answer my questions but now another question arise: is it worth it to update to the latest version if the game runs well without it ???

It seems to give more troubles than it solves. For instance, I am very enthusiast with the mods idea. It would be so wrong to miss that function ^^

For now, I play with wine under Linux. It works well even if I get some superficial slowdowns when there's too much things on screen (but it mus be due to my integrated graphics). I'm planning to compile the linux bin in order to get the whole thing native.

Hope I will not miss some features !!

It plays totally fine.
Worth upgrading yes, but as said earlier, there's a trade-off:

Choose achurch's version for fixes + improvements, but currently no compatibility with existing mods;
-- or--
Choose the official version for full compatibility with mods, but less new features, and sometimes problems with user settings disappearing.

So in a spirit of "never change a running system", and if it runs well enough for you in wine, you may as well keep your current 1.1.1 version.
Apart from this, running a native version is *always* better then wine.
Your choice :P

Hint: Get 2 versions in 2 different folders, to get the max. out of both ;)

You're right, I'll do that. Thanks for the tips :)
