We developed the main story concepts together. Alec wrote most of the final dialogue, however.

The process was long and difficult, but also quite fun. The story definitely evolved with the rest of the game. We'll explain more in one of the later "Days of Aquaria" (maybe tomorrow!), but the game used to be much more complex both in terms of its narrative and game mechanics. We spent a lot of our development streamlining both, and we're quite happy with the end results.
A lot of the themes in the game's story mirror the game development, which is fairly unique to video games, I think. This became a conscious decision for us but the way it came about was unconscious, I think. I have to say, I played through the game again recently, and it actually hit me pretty hard.
Sorry, I realize that last part seems pretty cryptic. But I'll have to leave it at that.
