Hard time starting out

Hmm, I'm having a hard time starting out... I'm not much of a gamer.

Anyway, from the start I made it to Home Waters, Naija's Home, and The Song Cave, but I don't know what to do.  Every passage is blocked by rock barriers or walls.  I must be missing something, a control or an instruction or something.

I did find a wall with an open-mouthed statue... and I think I found a pearl that should go there, but I can't interact with either.  I also found a giant monster stuck to the ceiling, but I am at a loss of what to do.

Please help a noobie!

If you have version 1.1.1 or higher...

You have a world map that lets you see where you've explored. (double click the minimap in the lower corner of the screen to get to it)

You can click on the maps to see your progress in them. The bright areas are where you've been.

Try exploring areas you haven't been to.

In the lower right area of the Song Cave, there is a hint...

Ah ha!  I knew it was something like that I was overlooking.  Thanks for the small hint.  That's all it took.

Great great game.  I am having some problems with in on Vista/Steam, but I absolutely love it.
