Can't get the laser to work (yes, I'm an idiot)

I just started; I've died about twenty times in the first energy temple; I can charge the pearl easily but I can't seem to work the laser. Sometimes it seems to come on by itself, but usually not when the boss is near. Generally when it's charged I push every button I have, left and right mouse buttons,  and nothing happens. I just keep getting creamed. I have done lots of fun things like riding seahorses and i know where Turtle lives but I can't kill Mr. Snarly. I read a post that said : "charge the pearl and then mouse over and fire", but I must be an idiot 'cause I just keep dying. Help would be greatly appreciated. My God, if I can't kill the first boss this game just could be hopeless!

You're fighting the boss in the basement of the Energy temple?  That pearl is broken, isn't it?  Maybe it can't hold a charge for very long.

Or, to be less subtle:  (Spoiler, highlight to read) |That pearl only fires the laser briefly, when it's hit with a Charged energy shot.  Lure the boss on top of the laser, then fire a charged shot to activate the laser.|

Sindhi, pi is correct, but watch those shots coming from the boss and you will find that it's very easy to swim through and around them so all you need watch are his claws while you draw him on and he does need a lot of working on the thrid time when he gets wise to what you are doing
