I'm really interested to know is: Has anybody in a similar situation managed to get back into the game easily by re-exploring areas in their old game, or would you recommend starting anew?
Well, I can tell you that I have been playing Aquaria almost for a year now, and in couple weeks ago I finally arrived to the last boss, and defeated it. I know that normal person would pass the game in a days or a week, but I have "prolonged" my gaming experience quite long now. Personally I feel that I have acquired something exceptional by doing so; even if I can't feel the same "magical experience" as in the beginning, it's quite similar. I have just wandered old areas, collected stuff here and there and listened the music (It's relaxing enough), and it's nostalgic too.
(After beating the final boss I felt somehow stupid when I found 3/4 Abyss unexplored and couple totally new areas were waiting (I wonder how I managed to miss them). Oh joy, exploring those areas reminded me of the very first seconds when I played this game. Unforgettable indeed.)
It seems that Aquaria is somekind of hobby to me, rather than just a game to pass. My memory is so worthless that I usually spent some time re-visiting older areas before moving forward, as I played very seldom. I don't know how long you have been away from Aquaria, but the longest pause for me was one month or more

so it was really exciting to come back.
I said this in a complicated way, but you can (maybe) see that I'm
quite addicted too
