General / shortcut form keys on a mac book pro with a french keyboard

Hi,
I'm using a mac book pro with a french keyboard to play Aquaria, and can't get the shortcut form keys to work. (1, 2, 3, etc. keys if I understand correctly)
I even tried to switch the keymap to US, but it does not help.
(I'm not even sure the problem comes from the french keyboard, as in key config -- which does not includes configuration for the shortcut form keys -- keys are referenced by US keymap even when I keep the french one on my system.)
Any idea on how to make it work?
