Gameplay / Re: After-the-end Question
« on: May 04, 2008, 05:49:08 am »
Yeah, the game ends after the final battle so you won't be able to explore after that.  But I don't remember there being a save point after so you wouldn't get stuck not being able to go back.

For the regular ending without all the secrets it stops before the part after the cutscenes where you appear on the last map and can move again.

This isn't exactly a useful use of it,  but it makes you do a cannonball if you hit the spin key when you're diving into the water. ;D

That's no whale (although there is a whale somewhere else in the Abyss).   It's not something you can do anything with now; the next area is to the left of it.

heh, cool. You know that this is the "thing" you find in the Kelp forest, which blocks ways, is invincible and reacts to your singing? :)
A nudibranch, right?  I thought those were plants at first.  Of course I also thought that the things in the abyss that eat you (predatory tunicates) couldn't possibly be real, but I was wrong there too, even if they're not as big as they are in the game.  The ocean's full of surprises.

The jumping controls are kinda fun to me.  I like the way you leap out of the water.  Once I was doing pointless tricks like attempting to jump out and then spring off the back of an eel to try to get higher; that ended badly when I got a bit too overconfident and tried it on a swordfish.  :-[

General / Re: List your favorite music tracks

I like the Mithalas city music the most, also the song cave.   Some of my other favorites are the ones from the kelp forest, the veil, and the open waters songs.
is there a way to extract the music from the game?  how did yall get the music tracks?
There's a jukebox mod that lets you listen to all the songs in the game (kinda like a soundtest mode):

It's the only one that's blue, I think.

Gameplay / Re: Not Buying and Here's Why

It didn't feel too spread out to me.  I mean, the maps are big, but it never seemed like there were any long stretches of the same thing without running into some new creature or different looking area or something.  I think it's more a matter of taste than being justified or unjustified.

The huge world to explore is one of the things I like about this game that I was hoping for after being impressed by the size of the demo, which kinda makes sense considering my favorite series is The Elder Scrolls games (which might be a better comparison to Aquaria than JRPGs mentioned earlier, since while they have very different gameplay they both allow for a kind of play style in common of just like wandering through a large place without much of a set objective looking at cool landscape features or finding ingredients or whatever, and collecting costumes and treasures for your home base).

Games / Re: What game made you afraid?
« on: January 11, 2008, 06:55:56 am »
Metroid II was the first time... That game just creeped me out like nobody's business. That music they played for when you first encountered a metroid terrified me!
Metroid did for me too, except it was the first one, and it was (for some reason) because of the music in the rooms where you find the chozo statues.  I can't really explain that reaction, because the rooms themselves give you good things.

I was also scared by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the NES, just because of the water level.  Except the only thing in there that bothered me was seaweed (which would kill you if you touched it, but still...)  Probably a good thing Aquaria didn't come out when I was a kid; it would probably've been total nightmare fuel for me.  ;D

Also Shadowgate, again for the music.  You had to have a torch lit at all times and if it started to burn low creepy music would start playing.  Then if it went out you die and this grim reaper face pops up.  But at least that game kinda makes sense to be scary.  :D

Gameplay / Re: Rank Your Favorite Forms
« on: January 08, 2008, 03:42:16 am »
I'll put the sun form as my favorite, because crawling through the Abyss with just a little headlight wondering what you might run into in the dark was rather fun, and tense (I rarely used the charge-up flash power, to keep the dark feeling).  Of course by the end of the game I'd been through there enough times to be quite familiar with everything down there, but the first time through was the best part of the game to me.

I also liked the nature form a lot.  It might not be as practical as the energy form but it was fun to try to do things like stick yourself in a little cactus tent and just wait as the enemies knock themselves against it, or throw it in exactly the right spot to take them out in one hit.  Plus its a quick lazy way to harvest a bunch of fish before you get the dual form, if they're close enough to a wall.  It's also the coolest-looking I thought.

Third favorite is beast form.  I didn't use the shots much because they're hard to aim, the way they sit still unless you're moving, sometimes you don't want to be moving towards the enemy to be able to shoot towards them (but I guess in those cases you shouldn't be in beast form. :P ), but I liked it for the speed and ramming through a bunch of enemies.  And for the way it fits into the storyline, she said something about how she's worried about how much she's starting to enjoy the destruction (or something like that?) sometime before, and then you're dashing into things and devouring them left and right.  Kinda creepy, especially right after hearing Mithala's story.

Agreed.  It's my favorite game I've played all year (of 2007 I mean, best game of 2008 wouldn't mean much right now).  Definitely well worth it.  :)
