Gameplay / Re: Not Buying and Here's Why
« on: January 06, 2008, 11:52:01 am »
Regarding what I expected the game to be: Well, here's the big one, I suppose. Everyone who has stated that this game probably isn't for me are correct. It isn't. Aquaria is similar to a JRPG and my attitude to JRPGs is much like Yahtzee's: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2563-Zero-Punctuation-Super-Paper-Mario.
I understand perfectly that that is not the general attitude of people on this forum - after all, if you didn't like the game, you wouldn't have bought it and played it and be here talking about it.
Oddly enough I HATE JRPG's with a passion but loved Aquaria. I'm not sure if I entirely agree with the comparison. Or maybe I should try playing JRPG's again?

Stark raving bonkers the lot of you!
I reserve the right to call Hentai, furries and all that jazz bloody odd! I call a lot of things odd, sometimes I think the weirdness is amusing and kind of genius other times I think it's just . . . well . . . too bizarre for my liking.
Hentai falls firmly into the second camp.
People arguing and trying to justify their like or dislike for Hentai or Anthro or whatever falls into the first!

Just persevere with it for a bit. It takes a wee while to get the knack of jumping from cog to cog but once you figure out the best route you should manage OK.
I guess you could also try using nature form's spiked plant to boost you up to the higher levels of cogs (since the hardest bit of jumping is actually near the bottom of the cogs in my opinion. However it might be a bit tricky to boost yourself in the right direction.
Oh yeah and while I remember to mention it, I always found it easier to wall jump and so on in normal form if possible. I odn't know if it was a psychological thing but Naija seems to grip to the wall for a fraction of a second more in normal form than in, say, beast form, and give an extra half second or so of reaction time. But like I said that might have just been psychological, all I can say for sure is I fucked up wall jumping a lot less in normal form!

Gameplay / Re: Why I like this game but de-installed it (**spoilers**)
« on: December 24, 2007, 11:55:22 am »QuoteOf course, then the sun boss threw me for a loopIn the end I just gathered all my healing/defensive items and tried to wear the boss down...and it worked.
Snap.
The Sun Boss was the only one where I asked for help here. I was sure I was missing some sort of trick like the ones used to beat the previous bosses. As it turned out I just suck at being patient and at dodging! A few healing items and spicy rolls later and I was on my way.
I didn't find the difficulty too steep. Of course puzzle wise I've been brought up on a diet of Lucas Arts adventure games, so the age old tactics of "if logical thinking fails you explore EVERYWHERE and use EVERY ability on EVERYTHING until you get the answer" are well ingrained in my gaming style! That said I didn't have to resort to them too often, I personally though most of the puzzles and boss strategies made sense, even if a couple took me a bit longer to figure out.
Plus as someone else mentioned it was fun to return to the areas which you ran through panicking in the early game desperate to get to the next save point as you were being chased by a bunch of sea creatures out to get you(providing a nice fun challenge early on in the game) to being a breeze later on when you had all the forms and were more adept at controlling Naija effectively. Then the challenge came in the depths of the abyss and the body.
That's the way things should be, the areas that were a challenge earlier become easier as new more challenging areas open up. It's something games like the Zelda series and Outcast (have to mention it as it's the most underrated game ever!) did exceptionally well and Aquaria more or less got it right.
The other thing I feel Aquaria got right was the rewards being worth the challenge. The first time I used beast form to eat something after the Mithalas boss, I just thought "WOW awesome. Beating that boss was totally worth it." Same went for finally getting the Urchin helmet (it was a really handy item in the early stages).
So yeah Aquaria isn't for everyone, but is any game?

Certain enemies are caught by the bubbles and you can bind them and drag them around if you so wish.
The only way to find out which ones is to experiment.

Once you kill 3 enemies with the Li form (blue) you will hear s screaming noise which means that the Naija form's (pink) special attack is charged. Roll to switch to Naija, press and hold right click and . . .
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Enemies are just as perturbed by screaming women as the average bloke it seems!

Gameplay / Re: Two suggestions

I'm not overly fussed about the save points (there's save points close to all the major bosses that's the main thing that counts - maybe the kelp forest needed one more but apart from that it was fine) but I definitely agree that you should have t he ability to make map notes. I think the map would be too cluttered if everything was put on it but this game is perfect for map notes, many a time I had to struggle to remember exactly where I previously saw a blocked off path.
As for Li, I didn't actually pick him up to right before when I needed him. This was through sheer accident, I just completely ignored him the first time I saw him (which is rather odd considering how otherwise thorough I was at exploring the game!) and so I played the game to the point where I actually couldn't go any further with out him and found him on my second wander through the game world.
Oh and you guys do realise you can turn off Li's combat mode so he doesn't shoot at stuff don't you? You just have to sings his song and he'll put his blaster back in his . . . well . . . wherever he keeps it.
I'm in two minds about Li. I'm kind of glad Naija wasn't alone but he's such a damsel in distress.

There's only a few of those I didn't find in game.
I'm fairly certain the Vedha recipes and the Loaf of Life recipes are not found in the game and only through experimentation and let's face it not many people are going to think of combing bones, poison or buttery sea loafs (the recipe for which IS in the game) with anything. I was thinking of combining high powered items together but I was to scared of the "not another sea loaf" syndrome! Looking at that list I would have been close to making some things but not close enough.
I didn't do any experimentation so all the recipes I did find were found in game (hence why I've missed a few innocuous ones like Berry ice cream, I probably just swam past wherever it was found in the game).

General / Eurogamer Review
« on: December 18, 2007, 05:28:07 pm »
As far as I can see Eurogamer is the first major site to review Aquaria giving it 7/10
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=89548
A quick glance at the score made me think that perhaps the review was going to be a little harsher than I might have expected but I'm greatly in favour of reading the words rather than the score and it's a very positive review (with some nice alliteration too!), which is good to see.
I'm pretty much in agreement with most of it apart from his comments on it being steeply priced for an indie game. While that's true in comparison to other indie efforts, most other indie efforts don't have a good 20 hours of gameplay so I'm not quite sure why he thinks its overpriced. Oh that and I LIKE oblique puzzles (and I didn't think any of the ones in this game were too bad, compared to, say, any adventure game I've ever played!).
Anyway nice to see positive reviews coming in for the game, hopefully it will be the first of many.

Yeah there is some steam vents there, I did the same thing once, assuming that the pearl could magically pass through the steam!
Hint (well more the answer!): you can change forms after you bind something and it will remain bound.
