I have now finished the game which was excellent from start to finish. When you finish it, every chapter in the game becomes playable in any order with the incentive that if you achieve all the required objectives (Kill such and such an monster, find this object) you can obtain a secret "Report" that sheds light on some aspect of the games mythology. Given the questions that are left at the end of the main plot thread (Though its tied up neat enough that you could just dump the game there) for completists  like me Ive been replaying every chapter (You dont have to replay all of it, just enough to achieve the objectives required to get the report) to get the whole story. This adds even more to the gameplay, the fact that the enjoyable combat carries this and that some of the available ability pins only become available at this point is even more incentive. After around 30 hours gameplay I currently give TWEWY a solid 8.5 out of 10.

Its been a while and I haven't replied to my own thread, how remiss  ;). Ok after literally days playing the game it still hasn't gotten old, Ive just finished the end of chapter 2 with great deal of time off to level up my pins (I got whooped by the end boss a few times and decided I needed to toughen up). Back into the plot again for the final chapter. As a note, while reviewers say the plot can be finished in 12 hours (Ive spent maybe 18 so far) the amount of hours that can be squeezed out for a completest seems immense. With work and uni I dont have the time but Id imagine discovering every pin and leveling it would be the work of months.

Lol! I guess it hasn't been out that long and I'm just being impatient. If you do get it be warned the combat system takes some getting used to as you use both screens at the same time. You need to spend a couple of good hours getting your head around it. On the plus side you can set the top screen to auto so that you can concentrate on the main character and there are a bunch of other tweaks you can do as well so no matter what your skill level you can juggle things to suit.

Ok considering the rave reviews this game has received I'm curious as to what anyone else who has played it's thoughts are. I know Square Enix generally get a lot of hype with their releases any way and I realise there are arguments both for and against the company (Personally I'm a fan, with caveats).

This new game though is something else, sure it has square staples such as an angsty, intitially unlikeable teenage hero, with improbably spiky hair, but as the game rolls on it brings a lot of new things to the table, most notably great use of the DS touch screen for a combat system that is a challenge to get used to, but a pleasure to master.

Im not going to regurgitate what the major mags have had to say, go read a review if you haven't already played the game. If you have, lets discuss it.

Edit: Given the view to comment ratio I'm starting to think the game is earning its "cult" reputation. (I.e its liked a lot by a few)

I love the Beastmaster. Yeah yeah, I know its B grade and kinda lame. But I saw it as a kid and nostalgia goes a long way. Even nowadays I love it. *Starts humming the soundtrack* Think Im going to cook myself some popcorn and go watch it again.

Oh, avoid the sequels. They are the reason sequels have a bad name.

It was me I do believe, just before the games conference at ACMI. :)

Oh well. I just had a great weekend at Supernova, I got to meet Kaylee from Firefly and Ando from Heroes. Awesome :)

Anyway, because it was mentioned in passing on TIGer source recently:

Edit: Holy crap, this was supposed to go in the favourite movies thread

Ummm. At least in Aquaria Naija is underwater so there is an excuse for tentacles :P

That said I've always found this stupid Hentai fan art kinda funny. Never a turn on, just funny that people would go to the effort of drawing the character in a sexual situation.

My  tentacle sex pic I found most amusing is from the web comic Sexy Losers. The woman does the tentacle monster. Then makes it take her shopping, the girl is all happy while the tentacle creature has the grumpy thought box as they window shop :P

Off-Topic / Re: What books are you reading these days?

I'm not reading them at the moment but I reccomend anything by Peter F Hamilton. His best is the recent Commonwealth Saga which consists of Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. They are utterly awesome and fully realised, the man creates a world and you are drawn into it fully. Has anyone read this series? The Motiles = best enemy ever. Scarily evil.

All I want for Christmas is some time with my family and a good roast meal cooked by mom (I'm a terrible cook and I either eat out or eat frozen). I working Christmas day but I should be home for dinner, so my Christmas wish is Turkey, roast potatoes, gravy and to actually win Super Smash Brothers in a family all in :)

Some of my scariest SS2 moments were sound based. The aforementioned Midwives when you know they are around but cant find them ("I must protect the children") The protocol droids who explode when they get close, when you manage to hide from them ("Im sorry, I did not see where you went"). Even just the mutants who methodicaly move in place ("The many sings to us" "We are, we are, we are"). Sound was intergal to the game, it was a bench mark for sound use to creep the player.

*Spoiler*

When you think you are being guided by a female commander, someone you think is the only survivor left on the ship, and after many hardships you arrive at her offices only to find her corpse slumped over her terminal and Shodan explains to you that you have just been a pawn. The hairs on my neck stood up far more than any "Boo" monsters could have provided fear wise.

Yeah those were cool games. That a fairly primitive looking game in a genre that conventional wisdom (I.e mainstream game reviewers) would have us believe is dead, can be so creep inducing shows that atmosphere goes far beyond graphics.

As for scary ships having sailed, I still wonder what happened with the Mary Celeste.  :P
