Well I just discovered another "small" bug: seems that ingridients and foods won't drop from enemies or plants when I'm using the translated ingridients.txt, so I guess the first strings aren't just disoplay names. In other words I shouldn't have bothered translating the file at all. Oh well...

Thanks for the help anyway. I'm still going to do some testing to make sure everything else is working but I should have the translation ready within the next few weeks.

That's an old bug, you're either using an old version; meaning you pirated the game, or you magically made the bug re-occur with just translating things.

Second to that, I'm fairly sure you shouldn't translate ingredients.txt seeing that's what makes the cooking work. There are no names in there seeing there are also no spaces in there.

I'm running version 1.1.1, so it's not that. I originally bought the game in July 2008 and upgraded to 1.1.1 in December 2008.

I know ingredients.txt also makes the whole cooking system work, but as far as I can tell, the first string in every line of the file is the actual name of the food used in game, while the other strings govern the cooking system. Spaces are automatically added before capitalized letters in these strings, so for example "SeaLoaf" actually appears as "Sea Loaf" in the game.  I've actually already translated all the ingredient and food names and they all show up fine in the game, both in the inventory and in the recipes, and I can also cook anything else except sea loaves with the translated file. The only problem now is the bug. Curiously it goes away if I replace the translated ingredients.txt with the original English one, but I'm pretty sure I didn't touch anything except the actual names of the ingredients and foods...

I've now finished testing the Finnish subs, stringbank and help files and so they're practically ready. Testing took a bit longer than I expected, but oh well.

However, I've now run into a strange bug while translating foods and ingredients: while playing with the translated ingridients.txt file, it becomes impossible to fail while cooking, or in other words, it's impossible to make Sea Loaves. Whenever I try to cook anything that isn't a real recipe, I get the message "Too Many", even though I've got plenty of room in my inventory. Repeatedly pressing cook will also sometimes trigger the "Not another Sea Loaf" line from Naija.  ??? Any ideas what might be causing this?

Another problem with the ingridients.txt file is recipes that require "any oil" or "any meat" etc. In the file, these recipes only have "oil" or "meat" or whatever in them, but in the game the word any is somehow added automatically. However, if I change the "meat" into finnish, the recipe shows a blank in the game.  Any ideas on how to solve this?

It's been almost two months already? Whew! Well anyway, here's a small update on the Finnish translation.

I discussed the problem with using ä and ö with my instructor, and we agreed that I would basically produce two translations; one where ä and ö are used normally and another with ä and ö replaced with a and o respectively. This way we'll have a working translation that can be used with the current version of Aquaria, as well as a "proper" version ready to use if Unicode support is added in the future. Obviously not using ä and ö makes the Finnish translation slightly harder to read than normal, but there shouldn't be any parts where the actual meaning of a word is altered. Basically it takes a bit of getting used to, but it works.

As for how the translation is going, I've already fully translated both the subtitles and the stringbank. I'll be testing the translations in-game before I release them though, but that shouldn't take too long. Actually I'd like to localize the game even further by also translating the help files in the data folder, as well as the "ingredients" file.  Is there anything I should know about these files before I start?

I think the biggest problem of making a Finnish translation is that you can't use ä, ü and ö and whatever else you use with those thingies above the letters.
And last I recall when talking to a Fin about their language he said that they're quite important and that some words can mean whole different things without them.

I'm not sure if people have worked around this yet though..

Hmm, that is a bit of a problem... I could of course just substitute ä for a and ö for o, but that's not really a good solution. There are some words that can change meaning because of this just like you said, but in most cases it would just make the text look a bit funny. Obviously if someone knows how to work around this I'd be happy to hear it!

Woo, first post!

Anyway... I'm a fifth year English translation student from the University of Tampere, Finland. I've recently been searching for some software to localize as a part of a localization course we have here at the university. I was starting to think that I would have to settle for some boring open source software when I realized that Aquaria might be exactly what I've been looking for.

In other words, I would like to express my interest in translating the game into Finnish. I skimmed through this thread but couldn't find any mention of anyone doing a Finnish translation yet, but please let me know if someone is already working on it. I also noticed that Alec had suggested that every language should have at least two translators, but seeing as I've been studying translation at university level for the past four years, focusing especially on subtitling and video game localization, I would I assume that I can handle this alone. :P

In any case, I'll have a closer look at the files soon and report back if and when I get the go-ahead from our department to proceed with the translation.
