General / Re: Aquaria needs to be on XBLA!
« on: December 12, 2007, 05:37:34 am »
I think for the 360 this game wouldn't sell many copies unless on XBLA.  XBLA seems to be the better fit on that end.  However, for the Wii I think it makes perfect sense to go the full monty and have it as an actual, full game.  The Wii doesn't shoot for the most amazing technology ever, it shoots for fun games that can make good use of its unique hardware.  That fits Aquaria to a T.

Totally agree. This is one of those game that could get extreme popular if it were released on XBLA (almost seems perfect for it), mostly because it's so unique looking and soothing to play (might turn out to be a wanna-have thing for people). Maybe it's better to wait a while, see how people respond (maybe tweak things a little even - not that it really needs it).

Awesome.

This game would do great on Wii methinks.

Not really anything to nitpick on, the game is polished and oozes quality. The versus are very intuitive to do, and it's fun 'singing along' with the music finding the same keys/notes. The zooming in/out during play is super. The chapter (cave) section texts are a nice touch (I always liked those 'meanwhile' cutscenes in f.i. monkey island as well btw). One minor annoyance at first was noticing that Naija only has 2 speed modes (normal & fast), and I would probably prefer it if the speed is tied to your mouse, the further away from naija the faster you move instead of two steps of speed (you also you see a slight acceleration between the two modes, doesn't go as fluid as I would've hoped). I also noticed when reentering an area destroyed items/enemies respawned (not necessarily bad). And I was able to mount a seahorse, but it wouldn't go anywhere.  :)

I've beaten the demo (and it left me wanting for more, so if I have my paypal account sorted out, I'll buy the game for sure), I was surprised how big the demo was, pretty sad that it ended when I reached 'open waters'. I wasn't able to to kill one boss (the one bottom left cave that makes these seacreatures and shoots), I simply swam by him eventually (found a tiny graphics bug/unfinised mapping at the dark cave when doing middle mouselook to the left). At first things were a little confusing, and I just went exploring, but once I figured out the singing (plants, verses) things became a lot more interesting, especially the puzzles/bosses later on (I'm a total fan of exploration games of this type).  Still have to get familiar with the ingredients/cooking feature though. Playing with the mouse is perfect for me, very relaxing.  The art and programming is top notch, good attention to detail and special effects, it's just beautiful to watch. I love the engine, and I would definately like to see more games using it. Impressive game, considering it's done by just two guys. More please. :)
