I am starting to get the hang of the game. I am wondering if there is a secret to defeating the big shell after the energy temple, or do I just keep hitting it with energy?

I am an over 50 new gamer. I have been swimming armed with my one shield and some food I don't need because it is all for healing and I haven't been injured enough yet to need it. I can do really basic things, but I know from reading this forum that I am missing everything. Can you give me some help?
