As far as I understand, its probably a video card issue?
I guess it's not, as other user confirmed this when having 5:4 resolution set in settings file. I think there is something wrong with layers where these black bars are being applied.
The possible workaround is to use 1280x960 and activate image centering via GPU, both ATI and NVIDIA can do it AFAIK. But it doesn't work well for some games, and i didn't test it with Aquaria yet. If it works via GPU, then it will result in absolutely same visual resolution for 5:4 monitor (as if someone would use native in-game 1280x1024 resolution), but without those glitches.

And if that was about vsync - i don't know. Just remember that someone on the board was talking about this issue for ATI cards with Vista OS. I'll try to update drivers, but i doubt it will help. :-\

It should be! I added support for 16:10, 16:9 and 5:4.  ^-^
I wanted to ask, is 5:4 the only one mode where game sets black bars by itself? Would be great if i'm not the only one who is waiting for this little bug to be fixed...

Also (sorry for off-topic), are there any updates for ATI/Vista vsync lag issue? I'm planning to return into the "swimming" soon and thought that maybe some fixes were discovered already. ::)

And who would have a resolution like that anyway? Isn't wide-screen way better? =p
I'm sure it is, but who will buy me a new widescreen monitor, huh? :(

well there are 3 options to choose from:
- wait for a patch that fixes this small bug
- live with it
- choose a 4:3, 16:10 or 16:9 resolution. other aspect ratios might also work, only 5:4 seems to be problematic.
- Sure i will wait for the patch! But does anybody know for sure if it will fix this?
- I can live with this. I can live even with 320x240 resolution you know... Everyone can.
- I will be so glad to choose 16:10 or 16:9 resoultion! Just still waiting for someone to buy me a new widescreen monitor ;)

The actual goal of this topic was to understand if this is a bug or not. Other user confirmed this, so our goal is reached. Thanks everyone! I hope it really will be fixed. There are still many 5:4 users around.

How is it when you play in windowed mode?
Same if i use 5:4 resolution, for example 1000x800 - i see same things near black bars. No problems at 4:3 but i want to play it on my native resolution...

You can both try setting this in usersettings.xml and see if it will be same for you.
For example:

<ScreenMode resx="880" resy="704" bits="32" fbuffer="1" full="0" vsync="1" darkfbuffer="1" darkbuffersize="256" />

Chibi, i already have the latest 9.1 driver.

Alphasoldier,
It is actually pretty nervous to see such glitches all around walls while swimming/transforming/rolling. I just thought it may be another ATI-related problem. The sad thing that i thought new version should handle 5:4 resolution great, but at 1280x1024 i got just 1280:960 + black bars, which are obviously causing that glitches to occur... :(

Maybe you didn't see it because you are playing it at 4:3 or widescreen with no black bars? Because i really think that's all because of them.

Got Aquaria 1.1.1 and 19" monitor with 1280x1024 resolution.

When Frame Buffer Effects are enabled, i'm seeing strange textures appearing near the black bars (due to 5:4 aspect ratio). They seem to appear in some areas, beyond level walls, where everything should be black. I see them when some frame buffer effect is in action (ripples). It's really annoying me lately, and i tried switching to 4:3 resolution (1280x960) - bug was gone.

I have Radeon HD4870 and can see this bug appearing in both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 for me. Is this a known bug or does it have something to do with my video settings? I tried changing them but no luck.

It's difficult to catch these moments on screenshots but i managed to get some of them, used a lot of rolling. Saved as PNG:

Maybe there is some way to fix this? Disabling Frame Buffer Effects or using 4:3 on 5:4 monitor are not really good solutions.
