General / Aquaria in an Arcade Cabinet
« on: September 07, 2009, 02:54:13 am »
Wouldn't that be awesome?  ;D

I've been thinking of building a generic cabinet for a while now (to house a computer emulating Galaga), but then I realized how great Aquaria could be with a joystick, big-buttons, retro cabinet-art, etc!

If anyone here's got a system like that (a computer connected to an arcade-system's control panels, basically), I'd love to see pictures of Aquaria running on it!

The problem isn't that making a mobile version of Aquaria would be too difficult for Alec, but rather that making a mobile phone version of Aquaria would be difficult enough to keep it from being profitable. Even with the proper tools, moving a game from PCs to phones would take a lot of work.
Additionally, porting games isn't where the joy of game development comes from; I'm sure that porting games can actually get pretty boring.

I'm not seeing any problems on my mid-2007 MacBook with GMA-950 graphics (running Snow Leopard, naturally).

Modding / Re: Shame there aren't more player made maps and levels
« on: July 09, 2009, 04:19:19 am »
I think another big problem is that even when some are created, there isn't a central repository for them.
It'd be great if there was a mods wiki; I know someone was thinking of creating one earlier.

edit: Nevermind, there's a wiki right here http://aquariawiki.ryanballantyne.name/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Though I don't see any mods yet. Too bad :P

I think that there certainly could be an Aquaria 2: a fan-made one!
All the tools are there; we just need someone with the drive to "git r' done."

I think the first thing to do would be to open a thread discussing the plot, then assemble a team to start actually constructing the game. I'm sure Alec would be willing to provide advice, etc. too.

This'd be sooo awesome!!!  ;D

I know that in the mac version, all sprites are located in the resources folder of the application itself (right-click, show package contents).

edit: I'm referring to your request for untarnished images of ingredients, etc., just so you know

The reason I ask is because I've been wondering how difficult it'd be to port some open source mac games to the iPhone.

Sorry for getting off topic :)

Thanks,

I know Nintendo did that (used art from their GameCube release) for a bunch of their handheld Zelda games.

I've always wondered how much the APIs differ between Apple's desktop Mac OS and their handheld version. That'd make a cool blog post.
Albeit a confusing one.  ;D

Then I'd have to get an iPhone...  :P

But yea, that'd be awesome! You'd be using the same art from your first Aquaria, right?

This game is yet another awesome indie game, with a crazy soundtrack by digital droo. I've been playing it not stop for the last few days; it's definitely worth 25 dollars.

edit: wasn't this game at GDC?

General / Re: Aquaria font to Word
« on: February 24, 2008, 01:00:24 am »
I don't think it's your language skills, I think it's just that no one knows how to do what you're asking  :)
I'm pretty sure this (the font) is something that would be created when a boxed version of the game comes out, and would be used in the pamphlet and packaging material. If Derek (Aquaria's graphics artist) doesn't create his own font, I doubt one will ever get made except by fans.
Anyway, I don't really have an answer to your question. It would make more sense to ask Derek politely for a copy of the font if one is created when a boxed copy is released if it has a custom font. So if I were you, I'd ask again later.

Off-Topic / Re: Introduce Yourself!
« on: December 14, 2007, 12:45:29 am »
Guess nows as good a time as ever to introduce myself  ;D

Anyway, been here a while, and I'm overjoyed now that Aquaria's out.
I'm pretty into macs, so I'm anxiously anticipating the release of the mac port.

And to bring this to a close, let me just mention I'm from 'merica near Boston, and I hang around Bit Blots IRC forums.

Yeah...  :o

edit: Oh yea, can't wait to take out some epic beast!

Hey Mr. Mario dude! I think that the "lost track" as you call it would be great addition to any "music of aquaria" cds Derek & Alec plan on releasing, so...
it might not be within any of the games files :)
Good luck looking for it though, if you do find that any tracks are easily accessed, let me know, k? I'd love to have some of that muzic for myself ;)

Games / Re: Mac Indie Games

Dude, you can't think of any mac specific game worth more than 15 minutes? Sorry man, but you just slapped Ambrosia in the face!

I mean, let me list some:
First of all, the Marathon trilogy.
Secondly, Myst.
And lastly, for some more recent examples, anything from Ambrosia (including Mac specific titles like Redline)

Way I see it is big corporations want to sell the most games, so they port to Windows first. Also, look what happened to Bungie after it was bought out by MS: not Mac specific anymore, eh?

These games are EPIC. Pay them some respect man  >:(
No hard feelings though  ;D
