General / Core reason you like Aquaria
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:01:36 pm »
So I was thinking about why I like different games and came to Aquaria (not a bad place to go).  It's got solid game play, good story, beautiful graphics, nice music, obvious polish.....but I've played many other games with these qualities to greater or lesser degrees that I haven't liked nearly as much.  I think it's the base personality of the game that really gets me, it's pleasant (relaxing and charming were other contenders for here).  The game never really gets dark or heavy, and even when it does it doesn't go that far before coming back to it's base charm.  It always feels upbeat and kind of happy (except when you lose Li, that was kind of depressing and lonely for a time....great job at crafting the moment Alec!).

I think most games I really like have this similar quality/personality.

So what do other people think?  WHY do you like Aquaria?  (other game examples are welcome too)

Cool start!  Please keep us posted for chapter 2.

I especially like the little touches you added around, like the door at the top of where you fell (yes, climbing up there was the first thing I did).  I was fully expecting the classic hole in the ceiling that I couldn't go into.  It was a pleasant surprise when I got there!  Then i started wondering if I fell or was thrown-out, who threw me out?  Lets go look around...

One problem that I did run into was I couldn't get the map to work.  Was I missing something or...?

Played through Sacrifice with your music and wow.  I didn't realize until now how much the music affects the overall feel of the game.  Liked most of what I heard, might need to go play the full game again to hear the rest.

Thanks for the encouragement!  Japanese is actual much easier then people make it out to be, not that it's easy just logical.  I feel really sorry for anyone who has to learn English, there are more exceptions then rules and don't get me started on spelling....

Not sure I agree with requiring learning a second language.  Getting more multilingual people is definitely a good thing (especially here in the USA, probably the most mono-lingual country in the world), you just get much better results when people want to do something then when they have to.

Most games I play for the story, but I also mainly play RPGs and adventure games which need one.  I completely agree that not all games need or get any benefit from a story, some are actually hurt by adding one.

The part I really like was #2 on the obsession with photo-realism and pixel pushing power.  If a game doesn't look better then last year it's no good, if it's not the next Crysis it's no good.  We've progressed to the point where the drive for better graphics is hurting the industry.  Games require such huge budgets that publishers (developers too?) are very reluctant to try new things and innovate in other areas, resulting in a stream of sequels and clones.

At least for me the ironic thing is that I prefer the more-artistic-less-realistic styles which are easier to do (Aquaria, Okami, and anything by Tim Schafer being good examples).

  Hi all!

Code name's Nericor, a card-carrying geek out to have fun.  Just finished the game (loved it!) a few days ago and came to the forum to see what mods and add-ons people had made, lurked for a while and figure I might as well contribute if I can.  Granted my programing experience is mainly with microcontrollers and my artistic ability isn't, but I'll see what I can do.

Fun fact:  Learning Japanese through self-study, mainly so I can play all the great JRPGs that NEVER get localized into English.  That and I always wondered what it was like to be bilingual and one of my goals in life is to have a meaningful conversation with someone in a language other then English.
