Modding / What tools was Aquaria made with?

Hi there 
Just wondering what language and tools were used to create Aquaria. I read in the FAQ a custom engine was created. Also what graphics and sound libraries did you guys use?
I just downloaded the demo and am cruising around the first few areas.
I love this game so far. It's the first game I've played in ages. I used to be a real SNES head back in the day and nothing much has taken my fancy until recent years.
