General / Re: releasing a commerical game using aquaria?
« on: July 11, 2010, 01:18:26 am »
The GPL says that any modifications to an existing program must be then republished as GPL. So if you're making a modified engine, you would need to license it under the same license.

I'd think the best method for this would be releasing as a sort of unofficial expansion pack / mod, kind of like Opposing Force and Blueshift from Half-Life 1. Of course, when making those Gearbox got permission from Valve, so you may have to do the same from Bit-Blot.

There's a lot of polish and everything feels pretty much as it should. So far as I've played, I've run into only one bug; and it was more funny than annoying or harmful. Plus, all the game's mechanics fit together pretty well even if they're not so complex. So many games, meanwhile, forget about the simple stuff.

This was my first FPS ever. I actually got pretty good at it, and I think it's still fun nowadays. However, the community has mostly fallen out and any servers will now need you to download ten dozen PK3 files. Its gameplay was semi-revived but failed in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

PS. It's free.

Support / Colorblind support

I'm not colorblind, and I'm doing fine in the game; however, I've met two friends today and tried to convince them to try Aquaria, only to run into trouble during the demo because they're colorblind, and can't open the flowers/do other puzzles when they're just color-based.

As far as I can remember, there aren't THAT many things in the game that are solely based on color, but might it be helpful to provide a colorblind mode in which, say, the flowers would show the appropriate symbol needed to open them instead of just color? (also those fish that swim towards the color would need to have the symbol on them)

I realize in each of those situations you could just cycle the color wheel until something happens, but I imagine that must be frustrating to colorblind people.

Heck, if anyone's interested, it could be something simple enough to integrate as a mod.

The leveling-up and perks reminded me of Modern Warfare 2, but it is very much a sort of party-multiplayer game. I bought it a few days ago when it was cheap, but I'm wondering how much time I'll spend on it.

Games / Re: Aquaria does`nt working on Windows7
« on: July 04, 2010, 04:39:40 pm »
I just had this problem earlier on a computer using Vista, but was able to fix it. For some reason, everything was moving slowly even at the logo (so I would hear the "projector turning on" sound, then 6 seconds later hear the Bit-Blot theme)
Problem was fixed by letting Windows Update pick my video drivers, restarting, and reinstalling. After all that I'm not exactly sure what did it, but the game is running fine for me now.

Anyone trying that "story is important" argument fails to account for the many examples to the contrary.
Tetris, Civilization, Metroid (NO. It doesn't have a story. It's just a good thing it doesn't matter) Multiplayer Shooters, plenty of indie games (I remember And Yet it Moves didn't have a single line of dialogue or exposition), etc. Heck, even games that have a bad story are pretty awesome: Gears of War, Just Cause 2, etc.

Story is just as much icing as graphics is, but I'd rather have a good story than a Crysis-esque game.

Heya.
I'm Katana. I've made my half-internet-fame doing Choreography in the Source engine (all those scenes in HL2 between NPCs; Kleiner's Lab, rebels telling you to reload, etc, are scripted, choreographed scenes) I made machinima for a while, and am now working with the Black Mesa mod.
I discovered Aquaria, like many others, in the Humble Indie Bundle. Since I owned 2 of the games, I paid $7 for it; something I'm reconsidering now that I've seen how awesome Aquaria is. Actually, my primary reason for registering on the forums was to see if there was a way I could donate additional amounts to Bit-Blot.

Gameplay / Re: Your Veil Moment
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:58:12 pm »
The reason it's such a great storytelling moment for me is it elicits an immediate "wow" outside of a cutscene. It's sort of a "player-invented cutscene" in a way, and it works perfectly.
Just as an area for improvement, I think the area could have been planned a little around that first moment. ie; no enemies in your way towards the surface (but they come back afterwards), before the first break there's a bright light above you that gets brighter as you go higher, etc.
I wouldn't say it's up there with Braid's switch-up ending, but it was definitely cool.

Well, with the source released, I'm sure it's possible for someone to just find the function that does it, and comment everything out. Even better, look through the lua code.

I agree that would be something nice to turn off. I'm not too bothered with it, but I could imagine someone else getting annoyed easily.

EDIT: Ah, wait! See what a bit of searching finds you!

Don't get me wrong, I definitely had a tough time with it. However, I happened to have been doing a lot of experimental recipes lately, and even had a Spicy Soup (the one that gives Beast Shot) ready, since I just spent the whole time in Beast mode. Surprisingly enough, I did use a lot of food but had no deaths (thank god, cause I don't know when my last save was)
When I beat him and collected the treasure, I was a little thrilled with myself to glance at a walkthrough and see "Some say this is more difficult than the final boss"
Score one for meee.
