Off-Topic / Re: Aquaria music at my wedding
« on: September 02, 2012, 12:14:09 am »
I am very slow to post, but . . .

We're married now!  And the wedding was great fun.  There were no other Aquaria-themed elements (no, zero costuming), but everything including the music was well-appreciated by the guests.

This was important.  We were concerned that having an aquarium for a venue would turn off some people, but they all seemed to appreciate the fun stuff: you know, otters and sharks and plenty of things that you don't get in a plain old event space or catering hall.  Then, when it came to the reception, we heard LOTS of good words about the music.  People described it as "spiritual"; and this was coming from folks who were used to traditional religious ceremonies (ours was secular and hand-crafted).  The younger generation (or at least one table-full of our age-group friends) tried to guess the TV series from which we took the music.  They ultimately had to admit defeat and ask me, while Sunken City played in the background.  And for amusement, it looked like the sea life (and particularly the giant octopus), enjoyed grooving to the tunes as well.

So, in conclusion, it worked.  Thank you yet again, Alec (and Derek), for making the magic happen.

Thanks, yet again.  We are unapologetic about the eclecticism of our tastes.  There's good stuff almost everywhere.

Hooray!  Thanks, all!

We're being secretive about the details online so we keep our "real life" separate from our "apparently-it's-not-real-because-people-keep-contrasting-online-experiences-to-'real-life' life," all in the interest of privacy.  But even if it weren't for that, despite our efforts we just can't get video recording for the event.  Oh, well.  It should be fun as-is!

. . . And the two of us will probably be the only ones who recognize the music.  Ah, well.  Can't let that stop you from being nerdy.

Off-Topic / Aquaria music at my wedding
« on: June 14, 2012, 11:28:59 pm »
Hello, all.  And particularly Alec.

I've been thinking of this for a long time, and now it seems it is actually happening.  Well, two things are.  First, I'm getting married (not to anybody on this forum, no).  Second, I want the DJ to play Aquaria music in the mix for the wedding reception.

Why do we think this makes sense?  We're getting married . . . in an aquarium!

Yes, Arnassi statues will watch over the proceedings with a somber eye.  The sculptor seems to have left off the limbs, but you can't have everything.  For music, the Aquaria selection is planned as Light, Home, Technique, Mystery, Remains, Above, Moment, Sun Temple, Arnassi, Icy Waters, and Sunken City.  These would be in amongst a bunch of other tunes with fades and such to keep it all sounding fresh.

So, Alec, how do you feel about this?  Has anybody asked to use your music at a wedding before?  And are you okay with this use?  I can't see how you could possibly object (we bought the CD through the normal avenues, after all), but I definitely needed to post about this before doing it.

And there you go: take one emotional experience, use it to score another emotional experience, and tie it all together with "aqua" words.  Symbolism!

I hope you are amused.

Aquaria for iPad / The adjusted resolution for original iPad
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:25:02 am »
So, I've gotten around to playing the game on my original iPad with the update that lowers graphic resolution.  I never experienced any crashes before . . . and I'm glad to say that none are suddenly cropping up now.  Whew.

But this leaves me with a visible drop in prettiness.  What are the chances of an in-game toggle where I can crank the resolution back up?  If it were possible, I'd imagine it should default to the new "low" position, and provide an in-game warning that it is processor-intensive if turned on.

Aquaria for iPad / Re: iPad1 Crashes

For general interest, who is/are working on these bugfixes?  And is there a more centralized discussion where we can see what's happening?

I'm concerned that customers (you know, the ones reviewing this game on iTunes) aren't able to see what work is being done, or to contribute if they want to help.

Shooting the boss does not cause him to eat.  He will eat whatever gets into his mouth first, being either you or those fellows.  If I remember correctly, you also have a small window of time after you feed him where accidentally bumping into him won't hurt you (so you can even be sloppy with the feeding).

But yes, feel free to get more food.  If you're a thorough player, you already heard Naija's comments about leaving and returning when more prepared.

Aquaria for iPad / Re: No Poison Loaf? Crashing...broken help screen?
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:43:24 pm »
Works for 1.1.3, at least.

This is one of the reasons I was so interested in bug-fixing in that other thread.  Using the Windows version, which "maxes out" at 1.1.1, there is one recipe called "Poison Loaf" and one called "Rotten Loaf."  They are the same item with the same graphic and the same -2 Health effect.  I picked up a single Poison Loaf somewhere in the game, but I only ever make Rotten Loaves when I try the recipe.

In other words, this was a mistake somebody made when putting together the items list: a name got changed partway through development but not everything was updated to match.  It would appear something similar is getting in the way of the achievement on the iPad.

Aquaria for iPad / Re: Newbie question
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:24:35 pm »
Wait, it can be easier than this.
I tried singing the same color it changed to, but i have trouble discerning the red and orange, and the two shades of green.

If you've gotten this far, then you've seen how every note has a color AND A SHAPE.  Remember the carving of the four notes in the Song Cave?  ( . . . Or, well, the fact that your song circle is full of shapes?)  If you have trouble with the color, then look more closely and see if you can spot the shape.

Also, every time you get it right (and hold the note long enough), the game gives you both visual and auditory cues, so it should be clear when you're making progress.

Aquaria for iPad / Re: iPad1 Crashes

For the record: I'm using the original iPad and I have not yet had a crash.  I made sure to get to the savepoint after "the first firefight" so I could confirm.

I don't have anything intelligent to add because I don't know what's so different; I'm merely noting that it is not universal.

To "get out"?  Could you be very specific about what you're doing?  I'm not at that stage in the iPad version, but I'm gone through it all on the PC version, and I believe that the nature of the fight changes at the point you mention.  You should go back over your basic battle techniques and see which one works now.

General / Re: Latest Aquaria builds for Windows [Updated 07/04/2011]

Okay.  My main thing is gleefully reaping the results of open source bugfixing efforts by people-who-aren't-me.

To say it in a less-dramatic way, I don't actually want to make my own modifications at this time; I just want to see how the game has been tidied/fixed/improved by others.  I recognize that there are multiple "others," so I'm being unhelpfully vague; but this thread gives the impression that a lot of work has been centralized into some helpful format.

I looked at both the changelogs you provided, so I think I understand better what bugs people have found/fixed.  They mostly have to do with fixing terrible horrible crashes.  Thus I am on my own when it comes to game content!  When I have more time, I'll ask elsewhere on the forum about that.

Aquaria for iPad / Re: Aquaria for iPad Released! :)
« on: November 04, 2011, 07:33:58 pm »
You can always edit your own review, and in fact you have a review archive accessible through your account page in iTunes.  Then, when a game updates, your old review no longer appears but you can re-review and find your archived stuff comes pre-typed in the field.  You can only hit "submit" once you've edited it, but "edits" can literally be hitting the spacebar and then backspace (i.e., you can re-review with no real change).

I think this may be recently-added functionality, as I don't recall the archived version always appearing like that, but it's surely there now.  And if I'm wrong . . . I for one have copied all my reviews into a Word file, because I hate losing stuff in a glitch.

The important thing is that now I have to be fast on the trigger a second time in order to redo the review after the update.

I think I could use some instructions.  Or information in general, really.  Is there some "readme" on the internet, or this forum, where I can get an introduction to this open-source updating?

I'm using the Windows version, which currently looks like it's a couple iterations back in the bugfixing.  Playing the Mac version, though, I thought I spied some new errors that I didn't see in Windows.  Thus, a changelog would be pretty essential.

Not to mention how I haven't solved every puzzle in the game, and I'm starting to wonder if puzzles themselves might have glitches.  It would be good to have confirmation on that front before I start looking around for solutions/hints and risk spoiling anything.

Yay, now it's the game of the week in iTunes!  And the entire first page is positive reviews!

Now, hopefully, you won't have to patch the game anytime soon and lose all those reviews.  The review system is . . . interesting at times.  Lots of nice press when a game gets in the spotlight, but then you never know what reviewers will do after an update.
