Modding / Re: Something like a sequel mod
« on: December 24, 2014, 04:58:58 pm »
Ah, it's been ages since I've played Aquaria or been on this site, this mod is still being worked on!? The dedication!

Haha, yep :D
Here, have a WIP screenshot:

^ New menu WIP. Songs are not yet arranged by color. The bottom bar maps to the shortcut keys [1-9,0] and holds songs, food, costumes, etc. Whatever is put in.

Last time I was here I was only  12 years old or so, so it's pretty nice to see stuff still going on. This mod still looks amazing, I'm almost tempted to go dig up my own mod project from back then, but I'm scared of looking at the abomination that is an un-tutored 12 year old's lua coding.
12 ?! I didn't start coding before i was 14 (DOS BASIC, which is totally different from Lua). Respect + Kudos on that!

You should continue yours if you can, this time learning Lua properly. It's super useful to be able to code, and it's a good brain training for later. It's good to have a logic-oriented mindset, believe me :)
Aside from this screenshot (which was pretty meh), your mod looked nice!

Right, I'm gonna go see about changing my username and actually following up on a few of these mods which were only idea's when I last saw them.

~~~"Liarra Sniffles [NsP]" is my steam user if anyone wants to contact me, I feel like this should be in a sig, but I have no idea how to use this site yet.~~~
Four years since I last poked my head in this way and HOLY CRAP MAYBE A SEQUEL AND THOSE SCREENSHOTS LOOK AMAZING!!!
I would totally pay money to see this get finished.  Considered setting up a patreon or a Kickstarter?  I mean, yeah, it's a mod, but still...anything to help it along.  Really impressed with the work and when Chapter 1 is ready, I'd love to give it a try.  God, would, I...
Hey Everyone.
For those who haven't heard, and I can't imagine why you wouldn't have heard, there's a debate going on on capital hill relating to video games.  The Supreme court is actually debating about whether or not they truly do have first amendment protection.  If they are proven to not, it will be a devastating blow to everything we hold dear.
So, I'd like to just put this out there.  For those who actually want to try and help keep Video games as the sacred medium we love so much, check out this site.
Video gamers of all ages and nationalities be heard!
Count me in!  I'd love to see an Aquaria 2 mod.  I'd also love to help out anyone whose serious about going ahead on this.  Maybe not with moding-- it's not really my thing.  But perhaps in terms of art design, story design, dialogue writing-- stuff on the creative end if anyone needs it.
You should post some samples of your work. Or make a thread about your ideas for an Aquaria 2 mod. It might help get the ball rolling faster.
I rather like Nightmareshadow's suggestion that Mia could be a figment of Naija's imagination.  Who knows the extent of Naija's own powers?  Maybe she created Mia from her own dark desires and need for adventure.  There is the problem that the Creator refers to Mia directly, but I'm sure we could come up with a plausible explanation for that.  Any modders interested in pursuing that idea?
I never got the impression that Naija was or ever would be mentally compromised. I like the idea that Naija may have unknowingly created Mia; her version of Mia, that is. As you say, her powers are not fully explained. Then maybe the Mia that the Creator refers to is someone else. Then Naija's Mia and the real Mia could meet at a Starbucks and hash shit out. It's been a while since I played the game though, and Alphasoldier seems to think it might conflict with established facts, but maybe it's worth exploring further.
I kind of wanted to think that maybe Mia, the real Mia, the Mia that the Creator did create, since we see her face pretty clearly on the long wall, raised Naija as any mother would, trying to protect her and give her a good life.  Think about it, maybe she wiped Naija's memory to keep her away from the Creator so she wouldn't need to live in fear.  Then the real Mia dies and Naija's latent power manifests itself as the dark figure, urging Naija on with promises of power and adventure.  To rationalize it all, Naija turns the dark figure into a new version of Mia, since she couldn't cope with killing the little boy.  Then, Naija under her new Mia's control goes out and has more crazy adventures on the final frontier...LAND!
  Anyway, it's just a thought I had.  Not sure if I like the idea personally, since it would disregard Aquaria Sacrifice, which I did enjoy, even if it was a little...weird and out of place in the Aquaria universe(mainly things like the jabbering, crazy Lumerian.)
Just finished checking on the Magic of Aquaria stuff on photobucket.  The flying seems like a really interesting idea, kind of like the game Cloud, but I wonder how space would work.  Naija...in the future!  Also, the boss teaser makes me impatient for a release of even half the game.
YOGODA!  We miss you!  In all seriousness though, I do write for a small online magazine.  If you think it might help getting the word out, I could try and do an article on the modding community here.  There's plenty do discuss with Beauty, Sacrifice, Angry Li, and of course, Magic, but there's no telling whether or not it would get blocked by the editors(they're an odd lot.)  Still, if I could use some of the screen shots, maybe people would get excited by the art and check out the main game too.
If more people play Aquaria, the chance of a possible sequel, fame, fortune, and all that, does increase, albeit little by little.
Maybe there's some ways we can improve the publicity of both these mods and of Aquaria as a whole?  I'm a little stumped, without help from Kotaku or whatever, though.
I wrote an Aquaria review using actual images from the game last summer and it's seen a fair number of hits(i even advertised it in these forums,) but apart from word of mouth over forums or what not, what can we really do?  It's not like we can ask Sony to just give it a try and see if they'd put it on the PS3.
Maybe we can draw attention to this Mod and Aquaria as a whole.  If anyone here has a private Blog or wants to put some info or if there were a demo for Magic of Aquaria, we might be able to do something.
Then again, I'm kind of grasping at straws.  It sucks that Aquaria doesn't get noticed...I tell everyone I know about it, but they never actually TRY the game.
I wonder...I doubt Alec would be up for trying to convert Aquaria to the PS3, considering the work, money, and the fact that he's working on Marion and a new iphone game on IA, but there was a modder who managed to port it to the PSP.  It was in the general forums...maybe he could do it...or other fans.  Me, I'm rock stupid when it comes to programming and debugging, but someone with that skill might be able to make it work.
I kind of feel dumb for asking, but what's the best way to send Yogoda encouragement?  I'd really love to see even half of this mod finished.  What with Sacrifice and Beauty being out for a while, some great new stuff(and the art is just phenominal) would be awesome.
Also, I'm not sure myself what Beta testing might entail, but I've got a bit of free time, Sindhi.  I could give it a try, if you're interested.
Actually it has always been a hope of mine that the fans would get together and make Aquaria 2, with Alec's blessing... and our mod was supposed to be a continuation of the game after Naija and Li move to another location far from Mia to raise their family and explore new realms and fight even more difficult bosses... in hopes that we could inspire a real sequel. And we haven't even finished our mod yet...but I for one would also like to see Mia get her vicious manipulating power-hungry little ass thoroughly kicked. I even toyed with the idea of having a subdued mind-altered Mia be the nanny for the kids in the opening scenes of our mod, but Yogoda convinced me that Mia was unstoppable and it was better to hide from her than confront her... at least in a mod....
You know, on that subject I always wondered about Mia.  There were actually some indications that, if interpreted correctly, she's actually like a split personality from Naija.  Think about it, only Naija sees her, she has dreams when she's present, visions more like, and while the Creator admits to making her, no one in the entire game actually sees Mia besides Naija...and Naija's own desire for adventure could have invented an excuse for her to go off on a new quest.  Granted, it does require some suspension of disbelief(not even I thought of it like this until a few weeks ago) but it's an interesting premise.
Also, I bet that if a sequel was made and Alec and Derek were involved, Mia wouldn't be a horrifying monster...she'd be like the Creator to an extent.  Evil, but sympathetic, driven into a corner from being on the run and not knowing how to be a mom or grand mom.  Maybe all she needs is a hug from Lucien and Naija.
That's actually an inspired idea.
Granted, it could be difficult, but I wonder...maybe Alec would cooperate on working out a story and music if someone else worked on the coding and artwork, which I imagine would be long and time consuming.  Maybe they could even market it as a separate game.  I know that Sindhi and Yogoda are working on a truly epic mod right now...if Alec gave his blessings for the game to be released commercially, maybe they could actually make some money off it...but now I'm looking too far into the future.
I hope others give this thread a look, because this may be where Aquaria 2 lies.  In the hands of a few intrepid fans.
I think you and Yogoda are doing a great job Sindhi, especially from all the great stuff on photo bucket.
Figured I should just let you know that, because the art is awe inspiring.  Anyway, since you're doing this for love, it's not making you much money(though if you got noticed that would be great.)  For fans who love Aquaria, we kill for mods like this and Sacrifice.
Anyway, where I'm going with this is, do you have a website or something that we might be able to contribute to the effort?  Kind of like how Alec asked for anyone interested to donate to Marion.  I'd totally part with some cash to show my support for this mod.
Sorry if this has been asked before, I've been out of the Aquaria loop for a few months and only recently got back to the forums.  But, if you need support, can we, the fans, help out?
I really didn't care for the ending myself, though it was more emotional than anything else I've ever played, but I also tend to like happy endings.
What gets me most though are all the variables, you know?  We can speculate on Lucien and his Girlfriend, or on Naija and Mia, but there are so many aspects of the ending I think people overlook that I just wish we had more data on, like how Xenogears had a data book released after the game, which tied up a few loose ends.  Wasn't necessary, but it was nice.
I personally wanted to know about the four surviving races and what happened to them during the timeskip.  Could Lucien's Girlfriend be of Drask's bloodline?  The prince was freed before Lucien was born and the girl we saw in the end didn't look much older than Lucien.  Or what about the Krotite and Druniad who escaped?  And just who were the humans on the surface, the ones that Li was a part of, with all the boxes we see marked with a falcon?
It's been 2 years since I beat the game and I still wonder.  The mystery is kind of the fun but, like Naija, I think we all have an innate desire to know the truth and find new discoveries over the horizon.
One thing I don't think anyone's counted on though is Alec's discussion about how the story goes on after we stop playing.  That can be interpreted in many ways, but I kind of like the idea.  It matches Alec's other discussions like on IA about how games can become living breathing things in their own right and that's kind of what Aquaria is.  An entity that has evolved and changed from it's infancy to the present(mods like Beauty and Sacrifice proved that.)
Anyway, I'm starting to go off on a tangent here.  I hope Marion is as grand as Aquaria and who knows?  Maybe there'll be a hidden Easter egg or nod to Aquaria within it.  The story only ends if you let it.
General / New Aquaria Review
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:55:30 pm »
This is sort of a shameless plug, but I figured who else should I share this with besides the people who love this game as much as me?
I recently became a freelance writer for suite101 and decided to put up a review for Aquaria that highlights it's best features.
It's been a while since I've played, but you never really forget Aquaria, right?
Anyway, here it is.
http://videoonlinegames.suite101.com/article.cfm/aquaria-review-pc--mac
I couldn't get a picture of Aquaria for commerical use, which is what the site is kind of about, so I chose something equally underwatery.  If anyone thinks I missed something in this review, feel free to comment here or on the review.
I guess that's it.  Still hoping for Aquaria 2, someday...
General / Re: Expanding the Aquaria Mythos
I'm not so sure about whether modders can't really make a sequel.  I mean, sure they'd meed someone to bring them together, from a loose knit group, but someone who's willing to put in the time to make a mod like Sacrifice has persistence...and in the end, persistence is something you want in this kind of business.  Don't want someone who's going to quit when the going gets hard a couple hundred thousand lines of code in.
Still, I wonder if Alec and Derek will expand on the history of Aquaria either with a book or a game, or whatever.  what will they call canon, and what will they leave to interpretation...that's something i'm really interested in.
General / Expanding the Aquaria Mythos
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:29:18 am »
For those who've not been in the loop, Aquaria Sacrifice has been released, a mod that, to say the very least, is a fantastic new take on Aquaria.  It's a prequel that's more adventure game style than the metroid style of the original, with a heavier emphasis on story.  While it lacks some of the production values of the original(voice acting, and the like), it's a great addition to Aquaria, and another reason to get your feet wet once again
Anyway, the point is, this game greatly expands on Naija, Mia, and many other characters whose pasts have only been hinted at in the main game.  This gets me to thinking...what are people's opinions on fans, sort of taking the world of Aquaria into their own hands, story wise?
This is something I especially want Alec and Derek's opinions on, do you have a set story for Aquaria?  Would you negate or approve of certain fans additions to the story?  What are your overall views on the idea of expanding the history of this world you've created?  Would you use some ideas from fan mods if you ever created a sequel, or perhaps even recruit some modders into a sequel team?  And how would this expanded Aquaria through the story driven mods affect said sequel, if it ever happened?
Have I blown anyone's mind yet?
I'm just curious I suppose, about Aquaria's future, or in the case of this and other fan made prequel/sequels, it's past.
I think we all clamber for a sequel...but it should definitely be kept small.  Preferably the original team(just Alec and Derek) doing the sequel...but I just worry for Aquaria's future.  A game this great...ends with a cliffhanger?  C'mon that's not fair!  Well, maybe like the fifth or tenth anniversary of Aquaria's release Bit Blot will reform and start on a sequel(i'd wait for it.)
Please tell me we're gonna get that and the soundtrack...that clip was sooo unfair...it's like teasing a starving person with food.  It's so beautiful...here's hoping we can hear the full thing some day.
