Title: Endless Ocean for the Wii
Post by: EmperorNick on January 10, 2008, 03:07:37 pm
Submitted for your curiosity: I give you "Endless Ocean", a game for the Wii which seems strikingly similar to Aquaria minus fighting and magic...

Make of it what you will, but I think it sounds intriguing.

Sure, it's sounds like that. But to be honest, Aquaria is quite different, although this new game seems to be similliar in some aspects, say even the same. It would require to play it to say anything more. Graphics are rather mid-quality, it seems that only animation is quite nice. Of course, some will say it's a rip off Aquaria, or inversely (if they didn't knew about Aquaria and will start to play Endless Ocean).

nothing special IMHO, there were already games copying the same aspects, or even similliar to this one.

I'm definitly getting this, even if it's just because I have a weak for dolphins or that Aquaria made me love the ocean or that I got a divers license thing or even because my familiy has been obsessed by oceanic screensavers, lol.
Haven't took a dive in ages though. ._.

Yeah, the game's awesome. It's been out in europe for many months now so I've had plenty of time to complete it. Graphicaly speaking it looks great, though for some reson the occaisional species of fish has lower then usual quality tectures. In a word the game's serene.

Anybody that says Aquaria or Endless Ocean rip off of one or the other needs their head read. They're completely different, save for the fact that you swim in them both.

All games in which you are underwater are exactly the same.

Now there was a problem I had with Bioshock.  All this water everywhere and not once was there any swimming section. No "Holy crap you're going to drown if you don't get this door open" segments or sudden floodings and Sphere-like moments where you have to swim from one section to the other. Just little trundles through puddles and a bit of surface paddling at the start

What's the point of chucking loads of money into the surface of water if you're not going to have a swish around underneath and marvel at all the seaweed/dolphins/caustics/refraction/predatory tunicates.

Slightly off topic, but y'know, water and all that :p

On the subject of "Ooh that's quite like Aquaria/Features water" I don't suppose anyone ever played "Laser Dolphin"?  :p http://www.dingogames.com/dolphin/ Found it ages ago on  an old uk PC Magazine cover disk.

lol, just tried the game, I think it's ok... but Awuaria is way better, even though it would be awesome if Aquaria had a stunt mode... Maybe there'll be a mod like that someday.

Because swimming sections in games not based around swimming are uniformly awful, frustrating experiences that everyone tries to get done as quickly as possible so they can get back to having fun (see also: most ice levels).

Hey, how come they lavished so much attention on the fire animations in F.E.A.R. when there isn't a point in the game when you're actually on fire?

Also for the Bioshock water, aren't you in a underwater city that is sinking, and so has puddles, flooding spots and a lot of small ponds?

Yeah, no swimming, though. It's mainly aesthetic, though it also magically ampifies electric currents which pass through it.

I've just recently had the pleasure of playing this game.

how it's similar to Aquaria:

how they are different

people who like underwater games might like both. people who like either one of these games may not like the other one. I like both, but EO is essentially swimming through a screensaver, it's great if you actually want to decompress after an aggravating level on a different game but will rarely run to it as a first pick to play. my comparing of these games is to point out the futility of comparing, but also interesting that there are quite a few similarities beyond being underwater

Hmm... I don't know. I love Aquaria with all my heart, but Endless Ocean looks a bit too boring to me. I want some hardship, an intriguing story... Endless Ocean most likely won't be for me because it lacks hardship. I love challenges in games. :) Nevertheless, it sounds like a nice game, jsut not for me.

Plus, I don't own a Wii. :P

I picked this up and it's a fine game, though less of a game than an experience, really.  It's very relaxing, and it bears no resemblance to Aquaria at all except for the fact that you spend time underwater.  It most definitely is not for everyone, but it's very intriguing, and if you're a fan of sea life and such in general it's definitely worth picking up.  If they make a sequel I hope they add a little bit more game to the experience, but the experience itself still remains the best part.  Very easy to just zen out while playing.

Anyway, definitely worth a look if you're at all curious.
