Title: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: TeTine on December 16, 2007, 02:24:13 pm
Hi
I'm a french fan of Aquaria and I purchased the game a few days ago. I have only one thing to say... i love it  <3
I can't believe the size of Aquaria's world, and to think that it's the work of just two persons, wow!

Anyway, I did a little fanart of Naija and wanted to share it (and to know if all the legal stuff are done correctly :p )
http://tetine--king-of-nada.deviantart.com/art/AquariaFanArt-72242934 (http://tetine--king-of-nada.deviantart.com/art/AquariaFanArt-72242934)

Hope to see more of Bit blot in the future  ;)
and long live 2Dgaming!

Heh, can't wait for the people who apply rule 34.
I also use the "revealing" costume most of the time, just cause I'm that bad.
Even though normal fanart is greatly appreciated too, seeing Naija IS sexy and all. =o

What exacly is rule 34?

I might do some later. The game is art in itself so much that I'd feel bad drawing it. I'd make it look bad XD .

For the record, after much pain and blindness, a friend and I managed to find an exception.

Dr. Dell and Rin from Dark Cloud 2.

OH EXPLOITABLE!

...*cough*

I'd like to see the continuation of non-pron Aquaria art, please.  I may even join the festivities.

There is one of the dresses that you can find ingame that would probably be the closest to pron. Thats probably what he meant by it has already been done.

I'm really not an artist myself, but yea those are cool pics up there :)
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart
Post by: Xiagan on December 17, 2007, 07:14:39 pm
Maybe we can shift our focus away from any rules (especially 32-36) and back to fanart?

I know this isn't helping the point I stated above, but I had to do it.  :P

Huh, I haven't found all costumes, yet, but I think the one she wears in the secret ending is by far the skimpiest :p

Love to see more  :) Maybe I'll try to put something to, Since there's x-mas and finally some free time to use  :D

These are fantastic! :D

TeTine, Alec and I have been marveling at your work.  I love her face, and the wrinkles in her suit... amazing!

Prom is one of my favorite artists, so what can I say... :-*

Guert, old friend - I love your interpretation of the creatures!  Extremely fun, and well-executed, to boot.  We'll have to commission you to do an Aquaria comic book. ;)

And Assault, I've commented on that painting already, but I'll say it again: I absolutely love the depth and scale you've got going on there.  Really breath-taking!

Woohoo! I got one done. It's almost 3am here at the moment.  ^-^

This is supposed to be something like the begining scene where Naija gains conciousness.
Can anyone read what she is thinking?  ;D

I think I over did the blur on the lower half...XD

Step #1 in learning how to draw as good as Derek: Actually draw sometimes. ;)

--- This is some fanart I’ve drawn for Aquaria. Right now its 3am, and I’ve been drawing this for probaly at least an hour and a half. So if there are any small issues, give me a break; it’s 3am on boxing day… XD ---

At last somebody has drawn that veil on Naija's normal costume at normal form.I just wonder why people don't draw Naija in other costumes or at least in other form (I think that Sun form can be really good).

No matter on what I said above that is a really nice picture. And you got my  admiration for that veil ;)

Hope everyone who will read this will understand.

Well, maybe if we all try to beg my sis, she will do some more crazy stuff  :D. She draws almost whole the time and loves to do it very much, so I think it wouldn't be a problem for her to make a few more pics  ;) I'll try to talk with her about this, we'll see...  :)

Man, go beg your sis to make more fanart cause this is absolutely awesome and I find it intriguing that everything on the drawing is from the game, the clam, the light, the jelly, the coral, the leaves, the helmet and the health plants. Totally awesome man and of course sis of man.
If she draws more again, ask her to make fanart of the bosses with Naija, just like the picture of Nautilus Prime and Naija hiding.

Sucking in the GOOD way, right?
Not like a tornado.

Anyway, that's also pretty damned neat, I should really put some attention to my artistic side and try to draw too, I know I CAN do it I just too lazy to even try.

@konjak: That's suprisignly beautiful, you can simply fall in love with this face! The simplest art is always most beautiful.

You know, Alpha. I've got the same problem. I'm sometimes just to lazy to do stuff, but i'll try to force myself, because I know I want to do this  :P

Or MegaNaija! XD

I'm way too lazy to draw, since I think my art looks crap anyway. XD
Last time I posted something, IceD's sister put up something way better as the next post. >.<;;

Maybe I'll try again.  ^-^ Art is a lonely dream of mine...

Finally a little spare time! So here it is, my first digital painting in honor of Aquaria. I took me quite a while.  I'm sure,as anything else, this gets faster by practice, but now I respect the amount of work went into Aquaria even more. You guys deserve all the praise you get.

very cool and creepy, has a Lovecraft feel to it. it's a good thing I have a deviant account ( currently like for myspace, just to login. really been meaning to do something there tho ) as I got a mature/nudity filter and broken image link. the image showed up fine after I logged in tho. I don't think there necessarily needs any warning for purposes here, the boobies are well obscured by bubbles  ;)   definitly like the painterly approach and the vool skin texture

I take your word and remove the filter. Most people won't be able to see it if DA blocks them. I thought it will just give a warning.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: inkblob on February 10, 2008, 11:54:50 am
that's just my opinion, but there are warnings for nude Naija's elsewhere, so it's probably a good idea to be a bit prudent.  half the time I don't notice that I'm looking at something naked until it's pointed out to me, not easily shocked. because your painting isn't overtly sexual and it's a fishy kind of nakedness it didn't set off my bells, but thinking about it can see that it might for lots of someone else.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Xiagan on February 10, 2008, 12:20:07 pm
That is a really different style. But it's cool! :)
And I think "fishy kind of nakedness" describes it quite well, I don't see why anyone may get offended by it...
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

Cause she's nude, no clothes, people are easily offended by that. I really like that pic too, the eyes frighten me a bit though.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

I don't think nude counts unless there are nipples.  That's what they do in mangas to make it "less offensive".  I can't say I really like that picture.  It's creepy.

Well, if a fishwoman accompanied by a genocidal baby nautilus popping into your view isn't creepy, than I don't know what. I always felt the first reaction of Li to be very realistic. No matter how cute she's on further inspection, the first thing you do when seeing something utterly unusual is to ensure safe distance, like run away screaming.  I painted with that in mind.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

Bearing in mind that Naija almost killed Li by taking off his helmet underwater, I think its fair that he ran away. ;)
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Alphasoldier on February 11, 2008, 09:41:39 am
Oh come on, you people all think it's so unnatural. Fish woman sees some weird guy in a suit with a helmet on, she doesn't know it's a helmet, but does know he resembles about the same as her looking at the body so she knows it is something that's on his head which she tries to get it off.

Li the same thing, a normal human suddenly seeing a mermaid, he gets scared and runs off, having never seen that before, he uses the wrong roads and gets cornered.

I must say they did a great job on this piece of storyline.

Yup, he forgot, as it seems. And I like that part of the storyline very much, I said I found the reactions of both characters very realistic. But still, it is a very much  creepy scene if you imagine it from a first person view, pretending not knowing the events that predate it.

I think that sometimes Naija can be a frightening character.  She's practically a dangerous predator. The beast form is good symbol of that aspect, that's why I liked a previous fanart depicting her as repulsive monster.  Sometimes she does things, that are, let's just say, not too environmentally sensitive. One of the oddest scene's of the game is when you venture into the nest of Nautilus Prime, kill the big momma, and raise a little nautilus made orphan by your own actions.

I think, this lack of  strict definiton of good and evil in the characters of Aquaria is an important element of the story. Think of the Creator, Naija's mom, Naija herself. Also, we are the most cruel predators of Earth, yet we don't like seeing ourselves like this.  In the end, this duality of the characters becomes a sensitive description of the nature of humanity.

That is why I would hate if this aspect of Aquaria never got adressed. It's sure relaxing to view her as the cute little girl that she is, but the other aspects of her character are the things that make her really interesting, and not just another reincarnation of  disney's little mermaid.

Its interesting, Naija questions her own motivations at various points as well... and often times when her motivation seems clear, it becomes more questionable if what she's doing is necessarily good or not.

Its interesting to see people's reactions to various things in the game. I was recently reflecting on the ending, and how its generally assumed that Naija's family with Li is a happy one. However, there isn't really much evidence to support what the relationship would be like, whether or not it was actually happy. Right after the scene with the baby, there's the pan back up to the original cave and Naija's line about:

"I longed for the feeling of discovering new waters - striving for a destination that lay just beyond the next wave..."

then in her cave, as she's sitting on the rock just like at the beginning of the game

"...it would never come again"

That was in part intended to mirror how the player might feel at the end of the game, knowing that its ending... and realizing that they'll never be able to play it for the first time again.

But it also brings up some interesting questions about Naija; is she really happy staying at home "burping babies and changing diapers"?

Another interesting angle is the theme of feminism. You could look at the game as Naija finding her own way and defeating the 'Creator', a powerful male figure, who was idealizing her as his companion. Naija also leads Li around for the game and is the one who rescues him, which is a flip on the traditional idea of "saving the princess".

However, Naija ends up settling down with Li and becoming a mother, which suggests that she's not totally independent.

In the extended ending, Mia returns and also brings back the idea of female independence, but this time to a further extreme. Also, Naija is enslaved to her in that sequence, so it suggests that perhaps the female power has taken over and is now the force that has to be overthrown.

The Creator I view as being mainly an innocent being, granted an immense amount of power - and he is not aware of how to be responsible for it.

Standard Disclaimer: These are my own views. I think there's room for multiple interpretations of the game, and I don't intend to disrupt anyone else's views on the matter by sharing mine.

Well I've always thought that the best relationship is one where each partner relies on the other, complimenting each other if you will.  In that manner, I felt Li didn't really live up to that.  He was more like a pet really.  Obviously he couldn't talk under water, but he could have had body language or something to show his affection in some other way.  Maybe have upgrades for Li sometime?  Instead of just new forms for Naija, there might have been something that only Li could use, lost technology or the sort.  I don't know...I've made it clear that I never really liked Li, but everybody finds there own happiness.  If Naija likes exploration and danger, well, then she shouldn't have had a child when she still had life left to live.  It's a common mistake among women who want to be mothers, especially young ones.

I thought it was cool how if you're watching closely as the scene fades, you'll notice that Naija is frowning.

Yeah, we had some more things planned for Li. I may get around to adding some additions to his behavior into a patch. I don't think it would change the game play substantially, but it might give him a bit more character.

Well Alec, since you and Derek are the creators of Naija (or at least responsible for it. Creations have the habit of starting a life of their own in your head), in the end, it's your view that really matters. Just make sure you leave enough blurry areas for us to brag about endlessly. :)

Now that I think of Li a little more, I realized that I have a funny relation to the game as a player. Being a male, I never really identified Naija as a representation of myself. I felt more like an observer, or invisible companion. I never liked Li, and if I'm honest, it's because I viewed him as another male, standing between me and Naija.

No, really, I'm normal, just thinking.    ;D

I concur with Mugodz, the second I read that I realized that. But I guess this is why there will be mods. I pretty much know every corner of Aquaria now... I wish I had some sort of memory eraser thing now to play it again in it's full glory.

And one thing I still wonder... all the things in Aquaria, like the things of feminism, the creator, Eric's emotions and stuff, did you all plan this out, did you have a start and ending and a few keywords in between, did you two make it up as you went or something else?
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

We didn't really aim to put certain themes in, I'm more realizing this stuff after the game has been finished for a while after reflecting back on it.

I think its because we did things that seemed personally interesting to us... there are some parts of the game that seem like symbols of events in my life that were happening while I was working on the game.

I know what the eels is thank you, my nitelliance and skill of recognision goes that far, but a bunch of faded lines don't tell me much, it does tell me there is something there, it doesn't looks like those worms, it isn't a eel. It doesn't even look like the wolf thing. So I have no clue.

it is a bunch of faded out lines, and wanted to try and recreate that feeling I had when going through the Abyss where it's all a mystery and your illumination reveals little clues.  she's totally defenseless and without any firepower except for light and wanted to capture the unknown, threatening nature against her luminous fragility. not sure if I totally succeeded but had fun pushing myself  :)  the ink stage is a breakthrough for me actually, drawing a lot of this in negative and technically happy with it:  sunform black/white (http://www.blobfarm.com/images/aquaria/aquaria_sunform_jw_blobfarm_bw.jpg)

You know, I think that picture is the best reproduction of the Aquaria artstyle I've seen so far.  The other artists gave it a touch of something that made it look...well, not like Aquaria in a way, but I was keeping an eye out for those eels on second playthough of the game and I snapped a pic.

that's the eel I used in my pic ya  :P  what I did was take some screenies in the abyss, doing her various sunbursts to get some palette ideas and reference shots for her costume and the creatures.  I took the basic colour ideas directly from the game but it's 'hand' painted. I appreciate the compliment Glam, but think that Daniel-David Guertin's and Tetine's more than captured something Aquariay and wouldn't have considered embarking on these if it wasn't for them  :)

Seriously?  NSFW is pretty universal for "bad language or explicit nudity and/or vulgarity".  It covers the gambit.  But hey, if it really bothers you THAT much.  Anyway, it seems somebody stuck a big red warning on it.  Just goes to show you, the squeeky wheel....

I think you meant 'gamut'. Anyway, as has been said already, an acronym is only effective if it's a known acronym. Of course, it's also only useful if you can actually use it without having to type the whole bloody thing out at length every time just in case. With that in mind, may I humbly suggest that you bookmark this (http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/)? Bear in mind that parts are NSFW, as internet lanugage is in large part determined by anonymous teenagers.

And how is NSFW not well known?  Anybody who goes on a forum or reads a blog should know at LEAST the important ones.  And as far as I'm concerned "NSFW" is one of the most important acronyms of the internet right up there with LOL.  But meh, it's not important to argue it, it's been fixed.

Yeah, see, I don't recoginse NSFW at a glance. I don't know about you guys, but I don't hang out on places of the net where I would need to. This is not an adult site, forum, or game. I shouldn't have to be wary where I click. This is about fanart, so I just go in and click.

Seriously, you got lucky my mum wasn't looking dude. I'd be royally pissed if I got in serious trouble + questioning what I do on the computer all the time.

I quite honestly have to agree with Hiro. I've been around the web, and as a kid when I first got on the internet I'm sure I saw stuff my parent's would have killed me for. I know what NSWF means, but some people simply don't. If a parent or anyone else hits one of these links,  bit-blot will suffer, and people will be ticked.

It's downright rude to expect someone to know what it means; I'm not ripping you for posting it that way, this post is kinda a general shout-out. (everything has been fixed, and this is the first time this has happened. The poster most likely saw other stuff on this site and thought it would be okay. Which it is. He used a NSFW, which unless you're used to the internet, and places where people actually have a reason to use it, you won't know what it means)

Kids play this game, and so kids will hit these forums. To be quite honest...

Think of the children.

aerendyll, don't know if you know, but NSFW means Not Safe For Work. That was the warning.

Nope, I didn't know. I hang out on the internet a lot, but I rarely use acronyms and I almost never encounter them outside of MSN.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: delve on March 19, 2008, 02:03:17 pm
Btw, is it gamut?  What does that even mean?

Google claims it means the range of percievable colors under specific circumstances. I claim that I've only ever heard of a thing 'running the gamut', rather than 'running the gambit'. In other words, it covers every percievable possibility. But we've wandered quite off topic.

As for knowing NSFW, it's not genetic. We aren't born knowing all these obscure acronyms. Nobody should be expected to know. Cut some slack, since we all have to start somewhere.

What they should be expected to do is find out as quickly as possible, especially since a search takes less than a minute. There is, in my opinion, absolutely no excuse for not knowing what an acronym is, or the proper definition of a word on a forum (note this specifically does not include IMs, IRCs, and face-to-face communications). Google will tell you faster than you can make it up. Now enough of this wrangling; bring on some more fan art, yeah?

This is about fanart, so I just go in and click.
I agree that it should have been warned with bigger letters but it's damn good tip to look at the link before clicking it. Maybe some nice griefer moron would come in here and post some nice link of adult pics, you would have the same thing. Yes it needed a Tag, no it didn't, You now learned 2 things, what the Acronym NSFW stands for and to check the links you click. Not everyone thinks of the kids on the internet.

If you think you have the guts or want to see some of the lowlife on the nets, go to 4 chan.

I've been trying to draw a semi-realistic portrait of Naija, but thus far the hair is killing me. I might find a way to work around it or I might even restart the colouring process. But you can expect a portrait of Naija coming up! :D

Hello, fellow Aquarians!

I've just beaten the game for the first time, and it's painful to discover that I've only seen a relatively small portion of the entirety that is Aquaria. The sheer size and scope of the game is fantastic and overwhelming - what an amazing feeling. (Yes, it's time to start again from the beginning!)

Anyway, I drew a little homage to the happiest thing to find while exploring a new, dangerous area:

http://coldphage.deviantart.com/art/Aquaria-Savepoint-80701084 (http://coldphage.deviantart.com/art/Aquaria-Savepoint-80701084)

Thanks to the creators for this incredible monument to gaming, storytelling, and artwork.

I like this, it's neat to see something non-figurative being spotlighted. and yes, those memory crystals are always a welcome site in an unfamiliar area.

Maybe I'll make another one when I finally beat the game (yeah i know it's a shame but I've been busy and plus I want this game to last long, like almost every other game I really love =p )

Well, expect some fanart from me soon. I began colouring the piece I made, but sadly I can't finish it anytime soon due to limited time I am allowed to spend on my computer at home (I'm at school now).  I will put up the sketch, though.

Well, I know this isn't visual art per se, but I'd feel like I'm marketing myself too much with a whole new thread on this. I'm part of the video game remixing community, but instead of doing an arrangement of one of Aquaria's tracks, I wrote an original track inspired by and in the style of the soundtrack:

Emerge (http://www.ubikmusic.org/ubik-11_emerge.mp3)

Hope you enjoy! :)

Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

Right click, view image,  then save it. And as far as I know DA always had watermarking.
If that dun work: Big watermarked version (http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs27/i/2008/116/0/9/_Aquaria__Swimming_Peacefully_by_aerendyll.png) and Smaller unmarked version (http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs27/300W/i/2008/116/0/9/_Aquaria__Swimming_Peacefully_by_aerendyll.png).

EDIT: And you could always ask aerendyll very nicely to host it on photobucket so we can all get it unmarked, seeing a few people here collect thems.

Well whenever I went to save the picture it would save "blank.jpg" which is code for "there's something else covering this image so you can't get to it" and DeviantArt usually doens't do that.  I don't like to have to visit a website to see pictures, I just save them to My Pictures and peruse at my liesure later.

probably more concerned about people claiming ownership and that they made the drawing.  I've heard of this sheer oddness happening but never run into personally ( you can take that good and bad, good it didn't happen, bad that you didn't make anything that anyone wanted to steal and say they made ;) )

Nice work aerondyl, I could sort out a poser figure for you to help with perspective and anatomy if you want?

Art theives are a problem but not so much so for a drawing, but ideas can be stolen :( but that is the chance we have to take or forget about sharing art altogether???

No they don't make millions glamadour but it is still done and it's still upsetting to the person who's worked hard on their art to have someone else use it without asking.

this picture took a few stages, with some of the pencil stages being mangled with on the computer, being resized, flipped, tilted so that was a fun experiment. here's few of the pencil sketches (http://www.blobfarm.com/images/aquaria/stuffy_sketch.jpg)

That's pretty good: you should use the color version in your avatar. I especially like the sun and water effects in the background. Naija seemed a little naked (calm down, boys (and girl) in the black and white version.

That's pretty good: you should use the color version in your avatar. I especially like the sun and water effects in the background. Naija seemed a little naked (calm down, boys (and girl) in the black and white version.

Thank you^^

Nice job.

That is awesome: it has none of the trademark stretching that happens in an innumerable amount of "animated picture" videos. Good job! You may have a career as an animator.  ;)

Well, it's better than some of the so-called "animated" pictures I've seen around the image boards.  But there's still that distortion and lack of perspective.  Personally, I think it's better to use a series of static pictures without lip movement to tell a story.  It just looks cheap that way.

I actually think it's pretty well done. What software is used? The image is a bit stretched so it makes it not look as good as I imagine it would if the image wasn't as pixelated... maybe that's because it was opening up in full-screen in my browser. I agree with Glamador somewhat but I think it's still creative and could be done with a cool style of it's own. I think it could be pulled off. Good job on creating something new that we haven't seen yet here in the forums Yecgaa.

I have seen this done before and it can look pretty good, and it can look really bad just depending on the user and how they select the area for the manip. Also it always looks better for short speeches, the longer they are the worse it can look if you aren't careful.

Though I have forgotten what the software is called of course :o lol :D

Thanks for the comments guys - they really mean alot to me.  The truth is this had been sitting on my HDD for nearly a year now.  I was inspired to do it after the ending of the wonderful games, but with work commitments and other things it kinda got left on the way side (and like i said earlier i have a short attention span when it comes to my own projects :P)

When i checked the site recently and saw that 1.1.1 version of Aquaria it inspired me to finish it off.  Im currently playing through it again, which is fitting for its one year anniversary (happy birthday Aquaria!  :-*)

Looks like this is going to become my christmas tradition too :)

Anyway, i've edited the original artwork a bit.  Made Li's hair darker (doh - how did i miss that one  :-\) and ive given it more of a poster feel.  I hope you like the ammendments!  :)

Haha. Tablet PCs are usually PCs engineered so you can draw right on the screen with a stylus pen. PC Tablets are pads connected to your PC through USB 2.0 so you can draw on the pad and have that come up on your PC's screen. It takes a little while to get used to, but it pays off. Look up Wacom Graphire.

Hmm, yeah, they want $2000 for the latest Cintiq 21UX which was made in 2005. Did price comparing online and it's all about the same price... I wouldn't pay that much for equipment that is 3 years old in technology. If it's that old it's probably still based on windows xp too. I'm looking more on the lines of something up to todays standards in graphics. If such a thing exists yet.

Thank you very much  :) Glad you like it b&w, I have a coloured version clearly in my mind but I fear it's beyond my skills (as I don't know how to paint like Silv or  do it with computer programs) ^-^

It has almost been a year since I bought this game, and I have enjoyed every second (I recently saw the first ending, and there's still the final ending left as I have found all the memories + of course much more to search). That's why making this picture was very important to me, like a gentle farewell to the Naija's magical journey of discoveries and adventures. So basically, my thanks in a form of a picture.

Other fanart-works really inspired me to try too, great works indeed. Nice to see so many different styles.

That is simple stunning Vetehinen :D Perhaps if you really want to know about the use of colour I could help you out sometime and oerhaps even paint version of it for you? Well, I know this isn't visual art per se, but I'd feel like I'm marketing myself too much with a whole new thread on this. I'm part of the video game remixing community, but instead of doing an arrangement of one of Aquaria's tracks, I wrote an original track inspired by and in the style of the soundtrack:

Emerge (http://www.ubikmusic.org/ubik-emerge.mp3)

Hope you enjoy! :)

Chibi that is because she has a long nose and more than a hint of Picasso about it which is perhaps just a part of Orange's personal style :D I could be more precise but that would not be fair on orange unless they asked :D

Nice soft imagery Orange, there does seem to be something very haunted in her face which you have captured really well :D

Interesting philosophy orange - it's good to explore.

It also shows that orange has an  artists mentality, perfect faces are for adverts and fantasy fairies ;D

Drawing ugly people is an essential part of an artists repertoire of skills - not everyone is beautiful, and beautiful people have a facial complexity closer to a cartoon relative to those with masses of warts, wrinkles, and other blemishes.  :)

Ok if some of you can't see what's disturbing I will explain, and Orange I am not critiquing your picture just explaining what it is that is effecting them like that ;D

1.  Her ear is set very far forward and a bit low so if she wore glasses she wouldn't be able to see out of them.
2. Her mouth is facing towards us yet we should only see 2 thirds of it by rights and the same goes for her eye also.
3. Her nose is twice as long as it should be even in extreme.
And
4. Her neck is also twice as long as a normal neck unless Naije wore those neck bands that some African women wear.

These are all tricks long used by artists such as Dali, Picasso, to name just 2 and I know there are others but as usual my memory for names has let me down :(

It is kind of hard to see these things because our brain will see the main features on a face and say "right it's a human face" but unless you have some training in anatomy then you won't be able to put your finger on what exactly is disturbing you.  :) And of course it's not just artists that have that training, some Doctors and Surgeons are also very good at seeing what is wrong :D

Good for you orange, I supose that my art is a bit too predictable really but it's what I enjoy and I do admire those that can do abstract art and make it look natural. Any abstract I paint just looks false to me so I leave it to others.

Howdy. It's Arch again. I lost internet at home until recently so I haven't been able to upload any doodles.
Though if it means anything, I plan to make due on my claim on posting more art. I listened to a lot of the tracks in the Jukebox the other day and it's had my mind bubbling like a cauldron. I have tons of ideas to implement.

I didn't go to art college until 4 years ago so it's not too late for you, unless rules on returning to learning are different where you live? I just never passed any of the exams that were needed for college in those days so I just went into other souless jobs, and kept my art as a spare time hobby until now.

So start studying books if you really want to learn it and look for couses if you want some qualifications also, but some artists sell without ever having passed one single art level..

Quite good - it has a very surreal quality.  :) It reminds me for some reason of the Ice Veil: the same ethereal background of light. My only quibble would be Naija's left ear - removing the lower half and/or reducing its profile would improve her head to no end.

:)  Yeah, I'm not very good at drawing living things, so I made a single-frame machinima (or whatever you want to call it.)  "Naija" is an normal entity with one frame of animation, and the metroid hat is included.  The real Naija is offscreen making sealoafs.  Also, Jellies make horrible actors:  they keep moving around after you put them somewhere.

Well, I want to draw something from Aquaria. I like to have variety in my drawings, and don't use one theme for more than a few of them. I just thought Aquaria would be fun to draw. I usually have to draw something more than once for it to turn out good, and I'm one of those people who need
things to look good. If I know I could do a drawing better in some way I usually redo it. I don't have a scanner, but I could find someone who does. Or just take a picture with a digital camera, although those sometimes don't show enough detail.

Drawing things twice is the best way if you have the patience for it, and it's very often something that comes with time and learning, but some people are naturally that way inclined, does that describe you?
If so then I am quite envious because I couldn't stand redrawing things intil recently. And draw what you want or the act of drawing is a chore...

I usually draw what I am interested in for the moment (Right now I'm interested in Aquaria   ::)) Or if I get a sudden inspiration by something that I just have to draw. I do most of my drawings with a plain ol' pencil, so most of them are black & white, I usually don't color them unless I designed them to be colored. Some of my drawings tend to be a little sketchy, but sometimes I intend it that way. Sometimes you have to look away from the details and just look at the entire picture. I am mostly inclined to try a few things out before I get something I like, although sometimes I just stick with what I have, especially if I have this really good bit that I'm not sure I could pull off.

I just had a good idea for a drawing in mid-type (like a scene just showed up in my mind... weird) I'll probably end up coloring it, but I'll post something as soon as the initial part is finished.

Aw man, that makes my piece look like crap. Now I have to redo it.  ;)

Really, though, what saddens me about my drawing is that I got a bit lazy trying to finish it, then rushed it because I just wanted to get it over with. It just doesn't look too... artistic. Also, the piece of paper I had been using has been carried around quite a bit, and the work I've done earlier on it faded a bit in contrast to the latter additions. Maybe I was too ambitious; my scene was supposed to be Naija in energy form approaching the energy god, but he turned out to be not as much fun to draw as I thought. I think I'll redraw a similar scene without him.

Seriously, that up there is demoralizing.  :)

Okay, it's finished. Not as good as the above picture, but I still think it's okay.
Oh, and the quality didn't turn out as good as I would have liked because I had to photograph this.

EDIT: Okay, that looks horrible. Gonna try to mess with the lighting a bit.
Heh, maybe I should have drawn sun form instead. Here's a bigger version, don't know if it helps.

http://i86.servimg.com/u/f86/12/56/27/81/aqua10.jpg

So, originally this was going to be Naija in energy form approaching the god. I drew that one, decided I should make another, started it. Got sick. Busy. Then procrastination hit. By the time I got around to finishing it, the part I started was all smudged and the paper was pretty crumpled. Fortunately, the really great picture reposted just before mine motivated me to make another one. First I was going to have the energy god as a silhouette with glowing eyes. Then a shadow. Then, as I started adding more detail to the cave, I decided to scrap him altogether. Also, I decided to leave Naija in normal form since I just thought she looked better that way, although she was supposed to be 'holding' fire in her hands, which is why they are in such a strange position.

Haven't been here for awhile. Odd to find my old picture still hanging here :o Zoko, it's good to finish picture even if there are hardships, I have found it quite instructive at the end.  Hm, now I want to draw Naija in Energy form too  ^-^

This is the usual image of Naija when I think about Aquaria. Naija sitting on a rock, and some light shining through water. It's quite sad image, as it refers to her loneliness.

It took about 2-3 hours to finish this from a sketch, this time I wanted to add more "underwater" effect. Graphite pencil work.

will there really be a sequel ?

will we be naija ?

Eerie-looking, I like the way the  colours gives the feeling of being underwater. Like a deep-sea fish, if you allow that kind of phrasing  :)

Certainly one of those "if only glance could kill" -expressions...

It's interesting how people see Naija/Aquaria characters in so many ways. I'm currently drawing Naija in energy form, but I have only seen couple works picturing that form/ different forms altogether. Anthony Wu's view of Naijas energy form, for example,  is really impressive.

She is very feral-looking. Definitely eerie. At a glance her expression seems to be very angry and hateful. Looking longer the expression seems stern and determined, yet a bit worn out too. However not murderous. It's like shes on the final run (the body, maybe?) and she's going all out or nothing.

But great work, from all you guys. Very interesting to see what other people see of aquaria. I want get a scanner sometime soon, maybe attempt some more artwork. The bad lighting just really kills the shading.  ;)

She is very feral-looking. Definitely eerie. At a glance her expression seems to be very angry and hateful. Looking longer the expression seems stern and determined, yet a bit worn out too. However not murderous. It's like shes on the final run (the body, maybe?) and she's going all out or nothing.
Feral is a good word. She started off looking extremely cat-like (before I decided that I was painting Naija) and I think some of that still shows, especially around the eyes and nose.

But yeah, I picture her facing Eric right about here, ready to give it everything she's got or die trying.

I want to do some clean-up work on this. I had a "morning after" moment where I looked at it today and wished I'd held off posting until I had time to go back and fix up the details around the eyes and lips especially. Another time!

I agree, the way her cheekbones and eyes are shaped does convey a cat-like appearance. Also her eyebrows look a little 'furry'.  ::)

Hm, it has been quite quiet here. I would like to see more works. Especially those close portraits are very interesting.

I finally finished this work - Naija in Energy form. Graphite-work, and I had to adjust colours a bit due to my scanner. Who recognizes this place  :)?

Achieving Energy form - power to destroy- was very exciting moment in the game - it changed monster encounters from "Hell no" to "Hell yeah" - and I found it very amusing how Naija laughs deviously while destroying enemies. Most used form in the game, yet only couple fanart made of it?

Seems to be that boss.  Looks to be a capture of the moment when Naija activates the energy wall, frying him.  Looks great.  It does really show her malevolent enjoyment of the fighting.

:D Hohho, that's awesome Naija you've drawn (or painted). Very original looking, there's somekind of realism I like very much, that serene expression as well. Reminds me of Naija pondering how to solve a puzzle which is blocking the way.

Technically I also like colouring, and how you made light and shadows. It may look simple at first glance, but it's very skillfully made. (Sorry I quote myself from DA  ::)) Music video of making that work could be an interesting idea.
____
And thank for the  comments concerning my work. That was my 3rd try, as previous ink-versions failed totally. One caught rain as I left it near open window, and other two versions proved to be to tricky with ink. The one I finished has all the aspects I like, for example grin on her face and that statue from Energy temple. I made lot of sketches from that place.

Next I would like to try something concerning Naija and her mother, through her memories. Maybe that small dwelling near Mithalas, where was that beautiful music. I liked that very much.

Music video of making that work could be an interesting idea.

Well, unfortunately my screen recorder isn't being nice on me. Apparently it can't record for longer than 10 minutes or something and watching the whole drawing draw itself is about 15 minutes of video. This means I have to find another screen recorder than 1) doesn't place a watermark on my videos and 2) allows you to capture your computer screen for over 15 minutes (20 preferred).

I've already thought about the music I'd put under the video and I thought of using Youth, Lost To The Waves and Open Waters (this isn't set in stone, but I find those the most fitting).

Nevermind, I fixed it!

:o Like I guessed, there was great amount of work to finish that painting. Amazing skills, but generally seeing how you used layers made it look "rather" easy. Although, I think I now know the reason why I skipped painting programs... because I never realized the idea of using layers  :'(

When it comes to tutorials, videos are a way more better than pictures with text, even if it takes more time to produce one. Fascinating to see how the painting developed.

Rule #1 of digital paintings: Layers are your friends. I lost count of how many I used for Naija - I use one layer per colour in general. It might look easy and such, but it still takes skill to pick the right colours and get the shapes to look exactly right.

When it comes to tutorials, videos are a way more better than pictures with text, even if it takes more time to produce one. Fascinating to see how the painting developed.

Agreed. Pictures with text do say something, but I find videos easier to follow because they don't overwhelm you with a wall of pictures and text.

Wooooow! Do it in English, and Alec might just use it for the "upcoming" case!

3 things I noted though:
- The Aquaria logo on the middle panel (the "back", not the verso) seems to be stretched...
- You might wanna use some official "PC CD-Rom" logo... http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/catalogue/P/136022.html
- The quotes ("Super Metroid meets Echo the Dolphin") seems to be a bit too "present": I red it before reading the game title... Perhaps some font/color/size change...

But you would change none of what I mentionned, I'd still like it! :D

That's very nice, you collected the "straight flush" by doing so many forms together. I especially like nature/beast/sun forms you made.

BTW: anyone who knows where i could get a screenshot/picture of Naija's mother? I have been planning to make a work from that small house near Mithalas temple, where was that piece of memory. It was very nice moment. I would like to include her face a bit (she was a shadow in those memories if my memory serves me right). I have a save game before that memory flash, but it's hard to get live screenshots after beating the final boss  ('cause I'm clumsy  :'()...

Actually this isn't my first picture with Marian in it (http://aerendyll.deviantart.com/art/Marian-A-story-yet-untold-126125056).  ^-^ I just never posted it since it didn't feel appropriate and it was published just after Infinite Ammo lost some of it's members. Poor Naija imprisoned to a crystal. I made this with graphite pencil.

I remember clearly when  I first time saw the menu screen of Aquaria, and that beautiful and eerie-like background music. At first I wondered what it meant, but later it was too obvious that her fate was horrible -  colourful crystal, a pleasant sight after a journey, would be her prison in the end.

PS. Archeus, this is not quite what you suggested, but I'll make a closer view soon.

Well, glad you like this, it was a relatively quick work as I felt really motivated!... it took about 2 hours, but usually I pay no attemtion to what time it takes.

I have couple of ideas what I'll draw next, but after I made some skecthes I felt like " I want to see this one finished". I'm not saying this was simple to do, as I'm always a bit concerned how the "underwater" effect will look; it's the problem I have faced many times when drawing Aquaria -inspired works. But it's fun to draw from theme I like, my way to show some respect to this great game, so that's more important than all those technical aspects :)

Nice piece! It really captures the emotion of the moment.

I myself have been trying to get back to drawing things, I haven't done anything yet but I was thinking of doing something in the more general underwater category. (As a result of my vacation in Crimea, it's a very inspiring place.)

Memories. This was a touching moment in the game, seeing some memories from her past in Mithalas.

The "ending" somehow highlighted this event even more I think.

Graphite pencil work. This work has been on my desk for some time, now I managed to finish it.

Those pencil drawings are seriously amazing, though on the first one, the contrast is low enough it took me a moment to figure out what I was looking at...  It might be interesting to see what a photoshop wizard could do in the way of adding color and lighting effects...

There are naturally many versions how people see the extended Ending - real version, and those which are a bit more influenced by your own experience. I played Aquaria quite long, and during the year I may have forgot something essential, although it wasnt a question about getting bored to Aquaria - it was more like prolonging the great experience. And when the ending finally came, it was really quickly over if compared to how much time I had played Aquaria before that.

In "my" version Mia imprisoned Naija into crystal because she saw how stubborn Naija was - if Mia's idea was to tame Naija by erasing her memory and start her "training" again in the future? This may sound akward to those who know what really happened, and know the lore more. Mostly I picked that theme from menu screen, it was very stunning and emotional moment to watch at first time.

Well, thanks to redownloading Aquaria because of updating my computer, and with this new version of Aquaria, I can experience whole game again - OST and Aquaria, good Christmas to me  :)

Tadaa!~ I'm back with another picture. :D
This one took me a while; mostly because its such a hard angle to draw (the chest alone went though to many iterations in my attempt to keep the picture both accurate and respectable >_<; ). Fortunately the addition of the cape allowed me to worry less about her behind.  ^-^

That's looking nice, I think "mangaish" style fits Naija well.

Drawing Naija using that angle, I agree, that's hard.  And if that kind of position looks crooked in real life, how's the drawing...  Sometimes human anatomy just makes me wonder. Luckily capes and all kind of clothing helps to hide these aspects.

That's looking nice, I think "mangaish" style fits Naija well.

Naija is, after all, a sprite.

As for the picture, I think the hair needs some shading or depth, it looks a little flat to me. Otherwise, the picture's great!

Hooray for the cape!  ;D

EDIT: Also, webbing on the hands? Does Naija have webbed hands? I have no idea. This is what I get for being on a forum at 1:20 am.

Ummm her hands aren't webbed (in this picture or in the official ones) so I don't know what you mean. Unless you meant feet, in which case, yes, they are webbed in both this picture and the official ones. xD

I did shade the hair, but the hair is white so the shading was light and the scanner didn't really pick it up. It looks better on paper. :(

Thanks :D

Hey, Hiro, shading is FUN. So, you could load it into Gimp 2.0 and shade it there; Gimp is free. Use the airbrush tool in black or grey and a fuzzy brush and about 30% opacity, lock the background, zoom in and shade away, undoing anytime you don't like it. Easy-peazy! Uh, if you know how to remove the background... three ways to do that, DeviantArt has a ton of great free tutorials. If you want. Just an idea.

I use photoshop normally, but I find using a mouse to draw extremely difficult. I have a hard enough time erasing errant lines. xD

If I had a good graphics tablet then maybe I could; but I'm not getting one of those any time soon. Can't really be bothered spending so much when I just got a light-box (and I haven't even started my comic yet)..

Hey Hiro-- You can scan pencil drawings into PS; that's what I do, as the graphics tablet I bought is hard for me to use; there's a learning curve, I guess, steeper for some than others. I'm going to try drawing with it to make some tree trunks, but for people it's pretty useless. I asked Derek and he does the same; the tablet is okay for simple things. I usually color in with pens before scanning and then shade in Gimp or PS or both; they do different things. I like how you can colorize with Gimp. I'm going to be doing some pics for cutscenes for our mod (Magic of Aquaria) and can share the Naija stuff here. If you have extra lines or erase marks you can use the brightness/contrast to get rid of them. It also helps me to zoom in when I need to fill in, draw,  or erase an edge in PS or Gimp so I don't have to have a real steady hand. There's a huge difference from the scanned in art and the finished product in some cases.

I'm still far off from the kind of talent these folks have, but my method is generally to outline a sketch on paper, and then go over it with a felt-tipped pen. The scanner will pick up this consistently, unlike the pencil, which allows me to then go through with a photo editing utility on the computer and tweak it. Drawing on paper is always going to be easier than drawing on the computer... the likes of photoshop is better for special effects, organization (copy and paste!), and the finer details to make sure it comes out right.
I know some people use a tablet, but I prefer actual paper OR mouse, as the tablet is more indirect and as such doesn't give you such a tangible response. Like I said though, I'm just an aspiring artist... I'm still practicing proportion and the human shape. (can draw pretty decent landscapes and passable concepts though)

Yeah, thanks. I forgot that part.  I do go over the pencil with a pen, and then erase; sometimes it gets messy and sometimes the pencil shows through, but I can usually clean it up in PS. It helps to use permanent markers for outlining and coloring. At first I was trying not to outline everything in black because of the cartoony look, and used lighter colors, but then later after some feedback I started using a fine black outline and amped up the shading. Also, Derek advised doing the drawings at least twice as large as the final product and he's so right; anytime I do things too small, they look too "rough".  If your rendering skills aren't that great, try the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. I used that with some exercises of my own to teach a lot of people, both kids and adults, how to draw people and other creatures realistically. It's a case of moving into the right side of the brain, the spatial side. Everyone has the capacity to draw as well as they like. There are just some tricks to help the left side of the brain to get bored and take a break from controlling the mind.  No talent required!

Lol. Nice tips.
Here's my work flow:
Sketch a rough with pencil, slowly moving it to darker more finalised lines. Then using my light-box and a nice inking pen (two actually) I trace the final copy out onto a new sheet. Then I go back over with more pencil to shade it. This works quite well for most things; except my crappy free scanner scans really lightly.
Next is to scan it and open in photoshop where I tweak the levels to make it darker (this unfortunately can't bring back shading that the light scanning didn't pick up); do some cleaning with the eraser, dodge tool and burn tool (lighter and darker tools) and shrink the picture to a good size.
In some cases (like this one) I also add a very faint transparency coloured level over the top to tint the picture (in this case it's blue, but its even more faint that usual so its almost imperceptible); can make them look kinda cool.  :D

I could probably do with some of the right-side drawing though. I find poses like that one really hard to figure out. ><

Oh man, perspective is such a pain, particularly where the human body is concerned. That is my achilles heel and my only response has been to just draw it over and over until I get it right... one time I had my little sister pose for me so that I have something to draw reference from when I tweak it in Photoshop. Generally I draw the pose first in what I call "rag doll sketches" which is basically the character in the most basic shapes I can get (squares, triangles, circles, pentagons, etc) and just keep twisting it until I have something that I'm satisfied with.

Haven't seen new fan-arts for months. And people have already received their OSTs, which should inspire to draw more  ;D

Well, I'm finding some problems and number one is TOO MUCH ideas  :'(. Hence, I'm asking if someone could suggest a theme? Archeus suggested one some time ago and it was a success for my part, at least. Not boasting or anything like that, I'm only looking for new inspiration.

The gradient in the sky is made out of gradient, and the "Halo" helmet is Quemaqua (he's actually a floating Samus helmet, sorry if doesn't look like it but it took me all of five minutes to draw) I really have no idea what you're doing here, there isn't much that needs to be illuminated...

And it was very easy to work with! No resizing had to be done, all I did was flip it around and make the eyes look angry. This comes second to Derek's in work-withability since his is already a sprite.

I'm thinking about making a comic about this now. But Alpha, i still have no idea what to make you, so you're out of the comic until I come up with it.   :)

It might look a bit odd from that perspective but i think the "ears" are considerably accurate, in the original sprite they start around the hinge of the jaw which i tried to do as well. Maybe I should have broken the line though.

Stalky, I love your angler fish! In particular, those teeth are ruthless.  8)
And yeah, I know what you mean about the fin-ears; I think you did a fine job getting them right (they're really not quite ears huh). Though maybe I would have shown the join to the head being a bit wider since at the moment it looks like they only join by about an inch right at the bottom. xD I always imagined that the in-game sprites had the connection covered by hair making it appear thinner.
And as the others said, the lighting really is amazing.  ^-^

Naturally, here's the part when Naija have to sing - one step before energy form does the trick...

Graphite pencil work, but contrast adjusted to be darker than original - I think it fits the mood better. Hard to say where's the limit of using that feature, when it goes too far and when the original version looks better. Just my taste, though.

@Vetehinen: Nice drawing, ever considered doing digital art? That way you could get rid of the roughness that comes with graphite drawings which might add to your work.

I also did "something" which i originally wanted to do right after my anglerfish picture but i had other things to do, it's a 3D sculpture made in ZBrush. If anyone thinks the lack of clothing is problematic or if anyone is personally offended i'll remove the picture right away and replace it with a link and a warning but i think it's quite innocuous, just some sober 3D work without any artistic merit, really. Click the picture to get to its respective submission page on deviantArt where there is a bit more info as well.

Amazing art, though the only two things that I think  could be better is (not to sound like a perv) that her breasts are too small/shapeless or she looks too mature. Either of the two.
Also her face looks a bit ogre-ish. Head too wide and nose and mouth are a bit meh, probably also wide.

That's my two cents though, besides that it's amazing!

The word "better" is quite ambiguous, i can think of three possible meanings, the first one is in the sense that it would be more appealing either subjectively or if that is possible objectively, the second is in terms of anatomy errors that need to be avoided in any case and the third meaning would be that it could more closely resemble the original design since this is fanart. I assume that you use it in the third sense, that still is ambiguous though because there are the concept artworks that can be seen in the wallpapers (http://www.derekyu.com/aquaria/downloads/aquaria03-1024x768.jpg) and the in-game sprites which look a lot different.
Either way, there's something i should have noted before and that is that i did not try to stay true to the original designs (as seen in the wallpaper) because quite frankly i don't like them very much and there is not very much 3D information to be extracted from the sprites. So what you said is true and i am aware of it. It's also quite hard to have a face with glowing eyes not look ogre-ish actually; at some point she looked like an authentic alien.

Besides that, thanks for the compliments (read your comment on dA, Zoko).

Wow, all this fanart activity makes me think that maybe I should work on that BitBlot comic strip I said I would do. I would have done it by now if I hadn't been so busy in the past month-and-a-half. I'm also working on a Gamemaker game for a friend of mine, so hopefully if I do decide to make a comic I'll be able to do it and the game at the same time.

Activity on this forum seems to be slowly dying... maybe a comic would make it a bit more interesting?

When you post stuff on the forums, be prepared for any and all opinions. I'm pretty sure Derek and Alec know all about taking criticism in stride with 2+ years of effort on display with this site. That said, I thought this thread was more for sharing fan art with the community, and less about having people critique it.

I'm really surprised that there isn't more activity. Aquaria is phenomenal and the modding tools look like they could create whole other worlds to explore with relative ease. The only explanation that comes to mind is that Aquaria is more niche than I thought.

It's kind of old now, and indie games don't get anywhere near as much attention as those major titles that can afford major PR campaigns.
Plus I think the biggest audiences in the gaming industry are put off by many of the things that makes Aquaria so refreshing, like vibrant colours, 2D gameplay...
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]

Heh. Stalky, nice work; but I did find that I had to block it for my eye security. xD
But if no one else has a problem with it you can leave it since its blocked for me now.

Comic would be fun to read I'm sure Zoko ;D

And modding..while it is really good, it didn't really get so far off the ground until the more recent patches where we were able to get and use the main game content to make mods with. It's a bit of an ask if you have to draw every tile and recreate every node as well as design maps and stuff. But by the time that came out a few people had already given up and left. That plus the fact that as a small indie game the community has never been huge and diverse enough to have tonnes of epic mods around...
Do feel free to make some stuff though, it can be quite fun. I demonstrated that with a simple energy-form battle arena type thing.

Yeah, I meant 'better' as your third definition, in the term as more lookalike towards the original Sun Form of Naija.

The second picture is a bit better overall (no not because of nipples, tyvm) but it's still not it.

That wasn't even that nude.  Though about the breasts...it looks like somebody molded breasts and then dragged a latex film over it.  They look too hard, if anyone understands that.  Also I agree that the face is a little off...doesn't look like Naija.  But fan art is fan art and if the idea is to improve it then my comments are here but I'm in favor of any Aquaria fan creation because it means people love Aquaria and that's awwwright.

Naturally scanning/contrast settings have something to do with the result. Original version looks more "pale" and "smooth", I guess.

Well, you could say that roughness is one part of graphites charm. That's why I love drawing with it - I usually draw using felt pens (aka drawing ink), and those illustrations looks totally different if comparing to these Aquaria illustrations I have made (where drawing ink doesnt work, at least when I'm drawing).  Digital art could mean colours (hehe, definitely not my field of choice), but on the other hand it "rips off" 15 years of experience with drawing ink and graphite pencil :)

One should do what he does best, here I envy those can use colours in such a effective way ;)

It takes a lot of time and effort to create a mod. There are a lot of things to learn and you have to write scripts to do interesting things. It seems a lot of people give up when they see it is not so easy, never asking for help. I remember when I first tried the modding tools, I almost gave up too.

Lol. I'm not sure how old you think I am, but suffice it to say that I still live at home; and since our computer is to one side of the main dining/kitchen room the screen is clearly visible to anyone who isn't in the lounge or in their own rooms. If my mother caught me with anything questionable on the screen it'd be hell to pay (I'm talking like complete mistrust, and no recreational computer usage for a long time). xD

I've been lurking for a while, and decided to share some art I recently made. I was considering making more Aquaria fanart to help me get better at using the tablet. I have til college starts back up.

http://paleshadows.deviantart.com/#/d2q9dtc

and here's the image in case you'd rather stay away from devart (I don't blame you.)

It was originally a full-figure image until Photoshop quit on me too many times and I got tired of painting the same things over again. (I know, I know, save your progress...) But other than that, it was fun to make. It leaves one wondering...is she waving? swimming? dancing? we may never know. lol

That's quite amazing.

I've always wished I could draw like that... maybe some day I will. :3

But... for now I think I'll just marvel at other people's works. ^.^

My desktop is woefully short of Aquaria wallpapers in rotation too, if you are so inclined.

Thanks for the feedback haha!!

NeatNit, what would you suggest I do differently? :] Right now I'm trying to work my way out of an anime style, but I'm caught in some weird limbo between that and...i don't even. hahaha!

I've never made a wallpaper before, Pelar, but if I get inspired, I'll post it. I've been meaning to do some short comics first...

Well, don't go out of your way to make something specific as a wallpaper- I was just thinking to possibly re-frame some of it in wallpaper layouts or something. :)

Hello out there!

I'm new to the forums, and am yet another crazed user who was astounded by the scope and feel of Aquaria.

There doesn't seem to be an html-embed in these comments... So here's a link to an animation I created.

It's nothing super, just a flash-thing of the Aquaria logo (which I painstakingly redrew :P) and bubbles.

I like the simplicity of it all. I was thinking that maybe you changed the logo in some way, making it swim around or something, before I clicked on it, but in the end I think this is better. :3

Like said, that comic really is very impressive when it comes to storytelling and style. I know how hard it is to draw  comic strips - especially composition and general planning are highlighted there more than in individual illustrations. You have a professional touch there, no doubt about it! I especially like the rich scenery and creatures. Small roughness caused by pencil only makes it more awesome, in my opinion.

Mahamari, thats beautiful! Naija looks like a "exotic" and slim water creature in your version, really good. Best of all are the colours! Very interesting looking technique, painting scenery in a different style when comparing to character to create nice "depth" effect.

3D landscaping/modeling/animating tool Bryce was recently updated to Bryce 7 (http://"http://www.daz3d.com/i/software/bryce7?_m=d") ($15 for the regular edition, $50 for the Pro edition). There is also a free Personal Learning Edition (http://"http://www.daz3d.com/i/software/bryce7/download?_m=d") available for download. I wanted to test a scene that always made the prior version crash, then I added a bit more:

She is one of ten mermaids whose lower torsos resemble a single tentacle. Each was a merfolk slave to a kraken and was mortally wounded, before being “saved” by a sea hag who grafted each of the kraken’s tentacles onto the unwilling mermaids, after the beast was slain. Now the mermaids have begun to exhibit the kraken’s powers and share its memories.

As the DM of an online undersea D&D game, I have found programs like Bryce to be invaluable tools to help get images out of my head and into the imaginations of my players.

Well, I'm finding some problems and number one is TOO MUCH ideas  :'(. Hence, I'm asking if someone could suggest a theme? Archeus suggested one some time ago and it was a success for my part, at least. Not boasting or anything like that, I'm only looking for new inspiration.
well, lots of people draw the nautilus, why not a blaster pet??? or a phirana??? PET THEME, SEA TURTLES????

cool!!!! what enspired that

Because when you say "octopus mermaid" everyone thinks of Ursula, so I wanted something different. Plus an actual kraken would be way too powerful for the adventuring party, so I got creative. Granted, I did start out seeing what Bryce/Poser would do with a mermaid with 8 tentacles:

But the other image is far creepier, so I used that.

Hi everyone.  I’ve been lurking on this forum for a bit and finally decided to join.  I’ve never really created fanart before, but after playing through Aquaria I felt an inescapable desire to create some for the first time.   So here you go.  I normally work in colored pencil, but for these I wanted to try out some watercolor.  I’m still getting the hang of it, though, so please forgive some of the sloppiness.
  Anyway, about these pieces:
One of my favorite elements of the game is all the ambient wildlife you can interact with.  I particularly love Ekkrit because he's just so dang happy to see Naija when she runs into him.  He seems like he could follow her around all day doing loop-de-loops around her.  As you can see, I’m also a big fan of those purple, buggy-eyed fish that cluster around Naija in the Open Waters.  As a SCUBA diver, I know what a great feeling it is to have a little school of fish following you around (usually they’re looking for you to scare up something they can eat).

For some reason I get a huge kick out of watching the Grouper gobble up whatever Naija drops.  Then when I found out he can accidentally swallow HER if she gets in the way… well, I must’ve spent a good ten minutes just making him gulp down our poor mer-woman and spit her across the screen (incidentally, what exactly do you call Naija’s species?  Is she a mermaid?  A fishwoman?  I assumed for a while that she was supposed to be a Mithalan, but I think there are a couple of hints that she’s not quite the same as them.  Maybe a Mithalan 2.0?  Or, seeing as how she seems to be unique, is she just called a Naija?)

I’m working on a few more pieces right now that I’ll hopefully be able to post in the near future.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Aristobulus on October 22, 2010, 07:39:22 am
I always just called Naija a fishwoman, though I think she is a mithalan. She's not quite a traditional mermaid so I don't use that term.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Alphasoldier on October 22, 2010, 11:49:01 am
The first piece is hilarious and the second piece just looks amazing, totally awesome work there.
Can't believe you did that with watercolor, I find that method one of the hardest ways to put art on paper.

I'd love to see more of that soon.

Also I'm not sure myself, I think the best way to summarize Naija is either calling her a Mithalan or an Aquarian.

Hoho, well that comic QnanG5284 made was great in b&w, but colours really add the last piece to it's look! Kinda reminds me of Marvels comics in a good way. Really professional looking job indeed...

Very good use of colours in Senorctenophores art as well, and boy, Naija and sea creatures looks awesome. Watercolouring, huh... I first thought of copic markers or crayons when I saw this. Great job to bring some humour to fan art :)

Lets continue drawing some fan art. I was very happy that Nature Boss Fight was suggested earlier (it wouldn't have come to my mind otherwise), so if someone could suggest a new theme I would appreciate it  :)

I had some plans to illustrate beast form, or to give a try and colour my 1st Aquaria illustration digitally (I scanned it with outlines before I drew it completely). Digital drawing isn't my tool of choice, though, but playing with colours could be interesting + could add the "underwater" feeling my pics lack.

Either the first encounter with the creator, or the final battle when she released Li. I think it'd be a nice challenge. :3
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Senorctenophore on November 29, 2010, 08:47:59 pm
I've got a couple of suggestions for fanart:

1.) How about some art showcasing the weird, wonderful wildlife that populates Aquaria such as the Predatory Tunicates or the Transportation Turtles or the Mutilus or even some of the obscure critters like the ugly fish with the isopod in its mouth or the robotic fish in the sun temple?  Or how about another Ekkrit piece?  Can't get enough Ekkrit.

2.) I'd like to see some more pieces featuring Li.  I know a lot of people aren't big fans of him because we don't get to know him very well, so let's make some art to try and change that.  How about, for example, a mini-comic or just a vignette from his perspective?  Try to imagine what he thinks of this whole other world he's just found.   Maybe something explaining what he was doing at the Veil anyway.  I've always pictured him as a scientist studying the biology of these isolated islands where he happened to see this cute siren-girl when he was a grad student.   And just what does he know about the Sunken City anyway?

3.) How about some art about the other Aquarian races like the Lunarians or the Erulians or the Arnassi?  Especially the Arnassi.  They get kind of cheated story-wise (no plot-pivotal boss plus you only get to see them as ghosts), but I think it'd be fun to figure out just what the heck they were all about.  I picture them like beefy, athletics-obsessed pseudo-Greek people.  With seahorse bodies.

Here it is, transportation turtle and Naija. Thank you for the idea  ;)

Graphite pencil work, took about 4 hours. Like in previous works, colours and contrasts adjusted "a bit".

I'll draw some more, graphite works are really quick to do if compared to ones made with drawing ink.

Wow that is really impressive

I'd like to see more, but I'm not sure what of, exactly.

Maybe some of Naija discovering Mithala city, or first getting into the Open waters? I don't know, though, lots of parts of the game would do well

Excellent job, Vetehinen! You've given that turtle a majestic grandeur. Fine work!

I don't know if you'd quite call this fanart... But I wouldn't know where else to put it.

Naturally I've been as intrigued as anyone about the writing system of Aquaria, but it never quite settled with me that these cultures would mirror English EXACTLY in language, grammar, and usage. But I figured that Eric must have spoken English, so naturally his creation did too. However, how could that explain why a simple substitution cypher lets you arrive at an exact translation of the writings of Aquaria? I decided I'd try my hand at some nonsense fake-linguistics to sift it out.

Embed isn't cooperating, so here's the link: http://www.doink.com/clips/Kondrikthus/1235741/analysis-of-the-aquarian-alphabet

Unfortunately, while an amazing program, DoInk doesn't yet have the ability to add sound to its animations. So throw on the Aquaria soundtrack before you view, otherwise you're in for a quiet six minutes...

I swear, I don't draw fanart often. But I find it hard not to draw Naija and Marian. =u=

EDIT: Also, I almost forgot.

When I was LiveStreaming that drawing some Aquaria fan (not sure he's on the forums here, forgot his/her name) talked to me about the eye colour of Marian. We couldn't agree whether it was brown or blue, since the Marian teaser trailer suggests brown, but other art shows blue(ish)... I hope Alec can help me out there?

Nevertheless, we came up with an alternative version of the drawing. It all started with the person I talked to suggesting neon pink eyes...

Very nice! I think it's not too bad to give her an older look, altough on the other hand I imagine her to look like, well, ageless. Something that has existed for, say, many decades but doesn't look like it. She's a doll after all, right?

I'm still quite surprised to see fan art from a game that hasn't been released yet :) Keep on drawing/painting!

Thank you very much for the comments concerning fan art I drew earlier!

When you grab collectibles, they instantly appear in Naija's house because it would be really, really monotonous having to cart everything back and forth.  But I'd imagine in the "real world" of Aquaria, there's probably a lot of this going on.
Poor Li.  Naija is such a freaking pack-ratfish.
Also, I had to include the Bigmouth fish at some point.  The fact that Alec and Derek actually included a Cymothoa exigua in Aquaria is so wicked boss that my head might explode.

"Om nom nom" goes the baby Walker.

I think I made Marian too old, though... :-X

And question for Alec: What eye colour does Marian have anyway?

She looks just fine to me :) no, better than fine, fantastic! She's meant to be about 16, but to my mind she is a bit precocious and a bit juvenile, so I don't think she will necessarily look her age at all times.
As for eye color, unless it's changed recently, they are blue  ;D

Awesome fanart, all! I'm so inspired looking at it!

Haha, thank you~ I just love drawing Marian for some reason... I can't really explain it. Thanks for the heads up on the eyes and age! ^-^

Annnnnnnnd surprise, surprise:

This was originally with more stuff on it, but it felt like negative space and I'm a little insecure about this piece. I hate the lighting and colours (though I love how the perspective came out), but it took so long that I don't really want to let it waste away. So I'll just be bold and post it.  :P

I completely forgot what child Naija looks like, I'm sorry. :( She's wearing a dark nearly invisible suit here.

EDIT: Forgot to add: props to Senorctenophore for their fanart. I really love amusing fanart like that. ^-^

Haha, it is, honestly.

Actually I once had a conversation with him somewhere and I called games his babies. I just had to draw it. :) I would've snuck the other parents in there if it wasn't so hard to figure out all the poses and distributing the space.

As an artist myself I can understand and appreciate how much love and care Alec puts into his work (and how much care you must have put into making this).  This captures that feeling perfectly.  Awesome work.
It'd make a pretty cool "coming soon..." advertisment for Marian.

O sheesh, that's just amazing. Even though I'm usually not very font of art that has a deeper meaning to it besides what's in the picture itself. AKA, you have to know what and who it is in there. This one looks really great though.

Haha, maybe? I have no idea how soon Marian is, but I'm sure Katie can make promotional art way prettier than this is. :)

Well, it's not like most art doesn't have that going on, but I think I can sort of understand. I never had a problem with people not understand my drawings, though - I'm fine with them liking the picture if they don't like the characters or whatever is depicted.

I'm quite flattered you still like it, though~

Really felt like doing some Naija artwork.

So here's a quick sketch I coloured in. :]

Yeah Giant hips. ^__^;;
I reckoned with all that swimming, she'd need legs and thighs of steel. Also wanted to make her hands and feet more fin-like and make her body more sinewy to glide more easily in water.

Wanna try and improve it and paint a background some time! :D

Hm, I feel like drawing again, just listened the Ost through couple of times. It's a wonder how one game can captive my mind for so many years! But this is more like a phenomenon than just a "game".

I wonder if someone could give me theme suggestions? I have few in my mind, but there're too many I have forgotten.
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Kein on September 04, 2011, 08:30:46 am
Hmm... it depends. What do you mean by theme? The idea to draw/represent?
Title: Re: Aquaria fanart [spoilers]
Post by: Vetehinen on September 05, 2011, 12:41:09 am
Well, previously Alphasoldier suggested a theme "nature boss fight", and that was a great idea. So yes, basically I'm "listening" if someone could suggest me an idea what to draw.

Previously I have drawn Naija in Mithalas ruins, scene of memories, energy form, menu screen version, Naija sitting on a cliff... and it seems I have forgotten some of the most unique moments.

"Depends", you say!  ;D

Hmm.. I see. Well, back then, while playing Aquaria, I have had some commission idea for Sun Temple. I really like this location more than any else. Somewhat mysterious and beautiful. But too much time left and I already forgot the details of the idea >_>
Yet I still would like to see something with Sun Temple.

Yeah, this is my favorite location, especially soundtrack.

For some reason I see Naija sitting somewhere on the beach or small corral shelves or just floating an the water surface while looking at the Sunspire somewhere far away, on the background, and a bright, almost white and solid sunbeam comes from the tower, blinding the viewer and making him cover his eyes.

I've always thought about transcribing some of Aquaria's music for TI-83+. I've done it with one song (a tracker module, not Aquaria, obviously) by cutting parts to fit 4 channels. The pitch is way off, and it was either ridiculously slow or ridiculously fast out of the box. It would be a fun exercise if I had the time. And a link cable (I used to use a home-made serial cable, but my computer does not have serial ports). And a 2.5mm jack and some speakers (maybe).

We probably won't use this as part of the "Something like a Sequel" mod.  But it's my concept of some of the sadness inherent in the game's ending.

Hello again!
Here's my another Aquaria fan-art drawing: http://kligan.deviantart.com/art/Memories-384575640
The colours are a mess a bit - I'm still learning  ;)

So, hello, I'm a new french member and I draw some stuff sometime, and I wanted to share those with you.
I only send link because the pictures are really big.

My first picture, a Krotide soldier :

My second one, a concept art for the sequel mod, something like an "Energy Guardian" :

Hope you liked those

They're cool, but the background is a bit too dark for my taste. Can't see them as good as I want to. :)

Hello!  New member on the forums.  I made this a while back and wanted to share it with the community (Naija encounters Mithalas), wasn't sure what to do for a background. http://seamonsterchris.deviantart.com/art/Naija-vs-Mithalas-395685144

Hey, very nice, TheCreate.  Especially that fierce expression and the wonky eye!

Wow, so much cool fan art lately.

Killigan: Pretty cool. I like the emotion in the picture.

Kein: Wow. Amazing. I love the colors and the glow of her skin. And I was always wondering how Naija kept her soups from sloshing around the rest of the ocean. I guess it would make sense she'd drink it like out of a coconut. Did you draw that on paper, then color on the computer? What program did you use?

Bhoren: Your pictures look pretty cool, but you should use brighter colors. I like the 2nd one best.

The Create: The details on Mithalas are awesome. It's interesting how you made him so colorful, like his armor is slightly crystalline. It helps remind me that he was a god before he became like that - like the remnants of glory.

I gathered as many fanarts as i could find and mirrored them here: http://fg.wzff.de/gallery/?dir=aquaria_fanart

So you don't have to scroll through 40+ pages to view them all. Plus a few extra ones i found around the 'net that were not linked here yet.
Some of the links in this topic are old and dead -- if anyone happens to have some pics that i'm missing, please tell.

Also check these:

http://humikochan.deviantart.com/art/Naija-in-Mithalas-Aquaria-fan-art-373596344  (not included because it said so)

And the last 3 pics in 2010 on this site are very nice, too: http://kenmei.fr/art.html

If someone doesn't want me to mirror their images just contact me.

A year ago I submitted my fanart here (http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=541.msg33346#msg33346). That was one of my first major drawings after I start learning to draw.
Now, I proudly present to you my second attempt: http://imgur.com/gallery/4pKh8/new

I've made a board on Pinterest for Aquaria fan art:

http://www.pinterest.com/FFfromNY/aquaria-fan-art/

Wherever possible I've tried to link back to the original source of the artwork.  However, for some of the pieces I was unable to find attribution information, or possibly inadvertently overlooked it.  If anyone knows of a source, please post here or under the piece on Pinterest.  Thanks!

I finally did a fan art for Aquaria. The actual file is a little large so I hope the forum resizes it. Otherwise I might need to re-upload later. Ok, that was indeed a bit big. Here's a more reasonable size for forum browsing.
