When you reach the surface, Li shoots the damned monkeys for no reason. I'm not sure if pets do, but I assume so since they seem to operate on the same principle. This might not be such a considerable problem if they just vanished or popped in a whirl of glowy stuff or something, but they freaking fall into the water and drown (as per the giant turtle thread). I suppose you could leave that in for those who find it amusing, but it shouldn't happen unintentionally I don't think. My wife adores the game on the whole, but that sort of disturbed her... and even though crazy violent games are my bread and butter, I felt pretty bad about it when it happened too. What was worse was that it happens in one spot every time I go back into the Sun Temple if I'm not paying attention. I've managed to accept the fact that there are lots of animals you have to hunt and kill in the game even if it seems vaguely unpleasant to do so (they all respawn anyway), but for some reason watching monkeys drown is just depressing. I think I'd prefer it if they were just part of the background and couldn't be interacted with, even.
Of course, this is just personal opinion, and I'm sure most people aren't bothered by it. I don't know, for some reason it just rubs me the wrong way.
-
Haha!
Yeah, it should probably be up to the player, but it is kind of funny that Li does it and it pisses you off. :)
-
I felt bad about it too... :P
-
Did you know that the monkeys still scream when hit after they drowned? =p

Yep. :)
-
It was almost a little funny because my wife and I had a couple running jokes about the pets being totally homicidal ("OH MY GOD IT'S A LIGHT BEACON KILL IT BEFORE IT EATS THE WORLD"), and when Li came along it was just twice the homicidal behavior, heh.
-
Yeah, I kind of like that the pets/Li are unruly. They don't necessarily share Naija / the plaer 's respect for the environment.
-
yeah, i keep having to switch to the last pet and turn li off of attack mode when im around turtles, i just can't stand killing sea turtles. The monkeys however, cause me constant amusement.
ooh, i wonder if you can use bind on them to pull them really far down
-
you can also use no pet at all by clicking at the already used one.
-
At least turtles give you turtle meat sometimes. Unfortunately, there is no monkey meat ::)
-
All you get from killing monkeys is a deep sense of shame.
-
Congratulations, you just made my new sig quote.
-
Yeah there were time's where I turned off Li's combat mode so he didn't shoot things willy nilly. He's totally under the thumb!
-
It's surprising how bad you feel when shooting turtles or dolphins in a computergame... Greenpeace, I blame you!
-
He also starts randomly shooting Sea Stars, while they, so far I know, don't even move if you don't come close.
-
I find eating seaturtles 3X my size hilarious.
OM NOM NOM NOM! ;O
-
Haha, I found this by accident. I was in Beast form and suddenly I ate this huge turtle. One of the biggest WTF-situations in this game. :D

My biggest WTF moment was when I ate the grown Walker in the Kelp Forest. I kept shooting at this thing like crazy and thought "Oh well, seems like I can't kill it."
A few minutes later I wanted to latch onto it (just for fun) again, but was in Beast form.
CRUNCH
I kinda felt like Chuck Norris in this moment.
-
Kinda makes you wonder if you can do that with bosses. :3
-
I personaly love to eat the boss that gives fish form. I always felt like it was the best way to beat an opponent: not only you defeat it but you eat it along the way. Nasty and primal :)
-
Uhm... afaik the fish form had no boss but a puzzle. Are you talking about an earlier version of the game or about another boss?
-
I hate monkeys with a burning passion so watching these bastards drown was quite pleasant.
-
Ah ha sorry, not fish form, spirit form! :)
-
Li/pets are like the alarm....but sometimes blind...
-
I too bear an illogical hatred of monkeys. I kill them whenever I can. It's strange since I usually love animals...just not monkeys...well, time to drown a few more!
-
Heh, have you ever tried knocking them down with the spikey armour?
Nah, I also don't like randomly killing monkeys/dolphins. I kill turtles for turtle meat though >:D .
Btw, I just told my friend Llama the ""All you get from killing monkeys is a deep sense of shame." - Alec" quote and he had the best idea! Make a shirt out of that quote! :D
It could even have a picture of Naija looking out of the water at some monkeys, with Li at her side (although to take that screenshot you'd have to turn Li into 'off' mode) and the writing could be below it.
I might just try to make such a shirt...but maybe I'll start with a poster XD .
-
I know this thread has been inactive for the longest time, but I gotta say, that monkey thing is disturbing for me, too. I wasn't even trying to kill the monkey, but totally knocked it into the water. I tried to use the bind song on it to put it back in the tree, and bind didn't work until it died (drowned).... Then I shot it to death some more to rid the screen of my mistake.
Will the monkeys be in the sequel? (If you're planning on one, that is)....

Wasn't it just a puzzle you had to solve to get fishform, I don't recall beating a boss for it, or was it that easily beaten that I've actually forgot it?
I was disturbed at first when the monkeys were getting killed, and a lot of other creatures also but then I thought WTF after all they are only pixels in a computers RAM. I have to think this way or never play these games, because I would feel really guilty if I killed a bee. I used to have a wasp trap but stopped using it when I found a bumble bee nearly drowned in it..
Wasps in Autum I don't care about as they have outlived their usefulness any way and most of the time they are like drunk trained soldiers that don't know how to stop going on the offensive. lol
-

You play as a monkey in the sequel. :o
-
And I'll jump in the water and drown myself at least once a day.

... the only monkey with scuba gear!

Man, I started reading that post by me but I thought it was someone else! It has been so long..
That shirt would still be cool. :)
-
Hahaha ;P I've assumed the sequel is at least partially on land because it looked like there was a boat at the end with the younger mer people in it (sorry it's been a while since I beat Aquaria) and I kinda wondered if you would be playing in an area with monkeys :p. The monkeys will know your past deeds of killing their brethren and try to avenge them :O! And then when you kill them off, you gain the monkey form XD..... :P Special skill; climbing trees and the attack (non-charged) is flinging poo :o (or fruit) and the charged attack is throwing a heck of a lot of poo (or fruit). Just kidding ;)
And yeah, I try to ignore the monkeys now. Whenever I jump near 'em in beast form, I kinda flinch a little inside because I don't want to bite/eat them. For some reason, it wouldn't bother me to kill the parrot though. Not that you see it very often :p

Hired.

lol ... you people are sick :D... hey ... maybe youll have a bird-monkey-boss-thing , that youll seriously gain a form from , but itll be optional ... so i suppose it wouldnt have many benefits ... maybe youll be able to fly (i know , i know... ::)) , so you can reach some treasures , if therell be any ... ^-^
i seriously cant wait to the aquaria part 2 ... if therell be one (i mean two lol ;D) , coz when i finished the game i got a feeling of incompletion ... and that was only after ive read all the forum about how to beat it ... anywayz , id be the first person to buy it even if it kills me !
*a while later* wow :o ... now that i actually read what i wrote , i see how dumb i mustve sounded ... ::) :o

ROTFLMS!

Rolling on the Floor Laughing My...S? I think you messed up that acronym.
And if you don't like killing monkeys and parrots and you're careful while jumping in beast form, then how do you feel about killing fish with random energy form shots? Because I don't think it's any more despicable. Besides, I hate monkeys. Aquaria is not a game that puts restrictions on things. If you're going to HAVE monkeys in the game, then you should be able to kill them.

Yes I messed it up Glamador, it stands for Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Socks Of :D A Brit saying that perhaps isn't used so much now? :D
-
rollin' on the floor laughin' my socks off ? it reminds me of my fav band eva... ??? :P
-
Yeah, I used to feel bad about the fish thing - originally I didn't even like hunting. Now I see it a bit differently, in part because this play through I did hunt so much. I use what I get. Now, if a creature doesn't drop anything (that I know) and isn't trying to kill me, but I still kill it, I do feel a bit guilty in my teeny black heart ;).
Like the fish in Home Waters who likes to steal your hunting drops... I'll kill him for stealing. There's some weird creature right before you go into Mithalas Cathedral that will follow you around.... I don't remember if it hurts you when it hits you or not (it's the grey/gray thing that looks like it has a big nasty jaw) and when you do kill it, it has one of those centered death scene explosion things. Did I have to kill that? I don't know and that did bother me a little at the time.
And yeah, Aquaria is more about the freedom to do things, so I agree that if something is in the game it should be killable.... but I'd love to turn off the kill the monkeys action :P all the same. I don't have a particular love for monkeys, but still I feel really weird if I kill one.... hence the trying to put a dead monkey back in the tree day haha. Edit: I also don't kill turtles, whales, or dolphins - I didn't ever drop anything from them, so I stopped. Same with the otters, although I have no problem mugging them for whatever they have.
Also, whenever I'm in the Veil I always want to be able to fly.... there's just so much of the Veil's airspace that I haven't been able to see when jumping or climbing. I almost feel like I wish I could bind myself and then use telekinesis or whatever the Bind song is powered by in order to fly around.
Anyway, happy playing ;)

I don't give this one a chance to steal anymore he's a bigpain in the ass ??? But killing the big guy how could you Sirensong? He is such a lovable dope all he wants to do is play and follow you around, and if you latch onto him and sing then you will find he also likes certain notes more than others. :D
-
I'd latched on, but not while singing ;) bad me!

You don't get anything other than a bit of fun and relaxation from playing with him but I like that in a game :D I recall one room in Riven where there was a telescope and some nifty little desk top game type thingies, you could play with them but they had no effect on the game this 'whale?' is one of those kind of light relief moments that I love about this game :D
I've got all the foodstuffs and ingredients for the face up with the final boss but I am draging my heels and that is mainly because I don't want it to end, and because I want to fight him during the day. RL.. Only if I fight him at night I will be on such an high that I won't be able to sleep ;D ;D ;D
-
Lol. Don't get too hyper. :)
The ending is good, savour it.
-
I just got killed again by the final boss, this time in his last stage whooee! I am a bit hyper but that's fine I will be calm in an hours time. Mind that strong hot java that I've just drank won't help but I love at least one a day :D Can't beat a good java especially made Italian style :P ;D
-
I actually really enjoy fighting the final boss... except the one that hides in the dark minorly maze-ish area.... That thing is just wrong creepy anyway. I also made more food during the course of playing the game than I'll ever need, which is kinda funny in a way. I also have several extra Special Bulbs and I tend not to use the purple poultices very often (I'm drawing a blank, sorry). If you need time to think while fighting the bosses, the spirit form is super helpful. I used it a lot especially in the last fight, partially because I had video lag (my comp's a piece of crap now :( ) and needed to be able to figure out where to go to evade baddies.

I had a lot of extra stuff also but it's good to have it in case it's needed. I found all the bosses but for the last one quite easy, the last one was easier once I went away and worked at dual form again and finally got the hang of switching and keeping the charge ::)
