Title: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Zen on December 14, 2007, 06:21:48 pm
Hey guys,
I lurked around for a bit lookin for a dwarf fortress thread and all i found were some mentioning it, so i decided to make this one.
All things dwarf fortress. If anyone would like to play a succession game or something id love for some of the community to get in on it!

Also ive put together the lastest build with a new graphic tileset and uploaded it to rapidshare. here is the link. http://rapidshare.com/files/77568050/DFwtihGFX33f.rar (http://rapidshare.com/files/77568050/DFwtihGFX33f.rar)

 :o :o :o graphical tilesets :o :o :o

I've never tried a succession game, and probably don't really have the time for it, unfortunately.

its not realy time consuming i mean ya just play a month or two in the game or whatever we decide and then email the save or post it here for the next person. not alot of pressure

We could come up with some challenges to try and complete like building a tower so high or not using certain things, stuff like that.

I tried to get into Dwarf Fortress, but just couldn't seem to grasp at it :/ It was almost comical though, in how it seemed to stem from Rogue, to the more strategical rounded type of game  :P

Once ya get past the learning curve its alot of fun to play

Sounds like most Rogue games. I highly recommend Nethack and ADOM. :3

Dwarf Fortress is worth more time than those. It gives much more of a tangible reward...as far as any game does :p

I'm up for this too :)  I'm Rusted, and I've been a dwarf addict on and off for one year.  The hardest part was for me to quit playing until the new version came out, and now I'm happily addicted once again.  Hello everyone.

I was thinking maybe we'd just create stories of our own for entertainment.   Stories that just may hinder us could possibly happen.. on purpose.

Unfortunately it's less of a learning curve and more of a learning wall. I'm going to keep trying, I've got nothing else to do now that school's ended.

it is a bit of a wall, but once you climb it. the game is so open.

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page

a wiki for Dwarf Fortress with a tutorial for new guys. I used it quite a bit to learn the "interface".

All I can say is. Beware of anything that moves with more or less then 2 legs (Dogs, cats and cows excepted).

Carp.. so.. painful... drag my dwarfs to the water they did.

My last Fortress ended in an epic battle between Lava and Hippos.

Sure i died, but I beat the hippos. MUAHAHA. erm.

You think they'd learn to run :P

Those carps is evil i tell you!

also beware of macaques they will steal ALL YOUR CRAP. beat them down >_<

They should've run then :P lava was pouring in. The hippos had decided to swim into my underground water reserve, and were chomping away at my dwarfies. I was doomed DOOMED. so I opened my 'flood gate' of sorts, and cooked the place :P

Mmmmm HippoBurgers.

Awww, DwarfPatties.

And quality burgers take time, because we all know how slow lava moves :p
And pieces of obsidian stuck in the meat, deee-licious!

Oh, I'm famishing.  I'd like everything on, including the crunchy elephant tusks!
Do the Elf come in onion rings?

Hmm...

*ponders, walking over to a nearby elf, measuring him, and doing a few mathmatical calculations*

Yes.

Also, anyone recomend any other Tilesets? and have any of your fooled around with the init file?
Title: Re: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Rusted on December 21, 2007, 10:22:44 pm
you pretty much gotta fool around with the init if you want to use character sets (custom graphics), and it's always nice to tweak stuff to your liking (like max dwarf pop you want or performance)

Pretty easy to read through and change things if you haven't tried it before.

Are you new to Dwarf Fortress?

Okay, for all of that information, I think it's only right if you give me that *points at elf* in a onion ring to go.

ive used some different tilesets but this is the one i like the best

It was more of a 'me being curious' question. I use GuyBrush and the dwarf tileset of which name I cannot remember. Makes.. comprehension a tad easier, so i can keep track of my Uncooked-Patt.. "Dwarves".

As for the onion ring, *lowers it into the deep fryer*

Am I the only person here masochistic enough to stick with the default tileset? I like the little inane, happy grins on the dwarves. ;D

I'm terrified at the very idea of starting a fortress, but I love adventurer mode. Wandering around being sneaky, throwing halberds and butterflies at people. At least, until I ran directly into a giant cave spider and got murderized.

Yeah, I remember when I first started playing the game.  I started out with Dwarf Fortress, but it confused the hell outta me, so I went to play the more fun and quick goodness of adventurer mode.  I eventually stumbled on that one long-running story of a Dwarf Fortress and Elephants and got inspired to try the Fortress mode again.

I'm the other way around, I'm terrified of Adventurer mode.

I WAS SO HORRIBLE AT ROGUE/NETHACK.

Well, I must be doing SOMETHING right. First round of migrants. I've gone from 7 to 27 O.O time to start building bedrooms and beds!

Title: Re: Dwarf Fortress
Post by: Rusted on December 25, 2007, 07:27:19 am
I've gone from my first phase of 7 dwarves plus the joy of new immigrants to 7 dwarves plus or minus take a few  of a narrow tunnel to funnel immigrants in -> elaborate traps at end of funnel -> death of immigrants -> the minor labor needed to clean up said mess.

And there we go :)  Still 7 dwarves, no more extra mouths to feed, and no extra work besides taking care of the 7 lovely dwarves!
I haven't yet gotten to the third phase, which I'm guessing from others is the hermit phase.

Dwarf Fortress is what I was thinking about at the time when I played Diggles: The Myth Of Fenris.
Great concept, I love videogames that have a sandbox approach, flexible enough to let gamers go beyond the developer's expectations... did you see what people did with Armadillo Run and N (the Force machines for the former and the DDA for the latter) ?
You should see what incredible fortress people build with DF, one is about a big system of pumps that allows a bunch of dwarves to build a tower in the ocean!!!

I really hope that the code behind DF can be optimized, or that it gets optimized for multiprocessor, otherwise in some future version my pc will not run it smoother than 2FPS...DF computes really a lot!
