I've led the boy through what I think are all his trials, but he's crying at this door now. There's a song printed above him, but no matter how many times I play it, nothing happens. I've tried playing it backwards too, but that doesn't seem to help. Besides, the background music sort of sounds like the song I'm supposed to play anyway, so I'm sure it's the right song. Just... nothing is happening. Playing it while a the door? Nothing. Kneeling by the child? Nothing. At the notes themselves? Nothing.

Think of it as "verses".

Verses? They're sort of split up into two groups of three, I'll grant, but playing them separately doesn't help. Playing the 2nd half backwards doesn't help either.

I'll give you a tip:
1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 5, 1 2 3 6. (All in one song)

This took me forever too.

IIRC, play 4-2-1-8-4-2-1-3-4-2-1-5

Yep, that's correct.
I found it rather easy, though, since the mother or whatever already sang the song for me.

That's actually pretty cool, and makes sense in retrospect. I wonder if there'd be a better way to explain the technique though... the commentary for Valve's "Portal" has made me think differently about game design in general.

I guess this would be a tough puzzle for tone deaf people!
I've a decent ear for music so I managed to work it out pretty quickly.
I wonder if anyone has figured out that song without seeing the notes for it beside the door? I guess it would be possible to figure it out if your good at recognising notes.

I learned it when the mother was singing it at the entrance. I had a feeling it would be important.
