Post all your weird/awesome underwater creature pics and info here!
I'll start with this prehistoric shark that was discovered (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/01/photogalleries/frilled-shark/index.html) recently near Japan:
Flaring the gills that give the species its name, a frilled shark swims at Japan's Awashima Marine Park on Sunday, January 21, 2007. Sightings of living frilled sharks are rare, because the fish generally remain thousands of feet beneath the water's surface.
Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qz_nZixWX6Q&mode=related&search=) of the shark in action! Unfortunately it died shortly only hours after it arrived at the park. :'(

I think now might be a good time to tell you I have a pretty huge phobia of underwater creatures. And if I ever saw one of those things up close, I'd probably have a heart attack.

I don't find any of these scary, just amazing. Statues are awesome too. I just love sea life in general, though. Whales fascinate me possibly more than any other lifeform. Saw this amazing thing on belugas the other night, a whole ton of them swimming in a big loop up to a small air hole. The blue water, the light shining off them, their whiteness... it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Could have stared at them for hours.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet: How about the Giant Squid?
Though I'm beginning to believe that the main protagonist of Aquaria is an oversized caricature of a sea-monkey (compared to the size of other creatures of the seas shown in the screenshots such as seahorses, turtles, angler fish, etc...), maybe a Giant Squid would be too large for her to fight (since we've seen her battle inside what looks to be a jellyfish).

That's a giant squid? Is it a baby version because the last I knew, the picture I posted was the most detailed picture we have of an actual giant squid (what I mean by "actual" is an adult). I'd honestly imagine the giant squid to be almost as long as a humpback whale...not just double the size of a regular squid like the picture implies.
-BGS
-
Yeah, the Squid you posted is the most detailed and documented live Giant Squid encounter. The Squid I posted it actually known as a Glowing Squid because it glows, it was the only one caught on camera as far as I know. It is, however, very big.
I don't know how big the one you posted is. Here are a few images the could give you a clearer picture:

Wow, that is a large squid...but what I find unbelievable is the theory people say that these creatures attack sperm whales (I said humpback before, but I was mistaken) considering they're the only other large mammals that can actually swim that deep.
Enough talking, I should post another picture

Last night, Wendryn and I were watching a documentary on PBS about cuttlefish. These guys are awesome! They are closely related to octopuses, but have all kinds of weird behaviours. They also have very large brains for invertebrates. This one is made of plastic:
This one is pretending to be coral, or something. They are very good at changing their color, and even the shapes of their bodies, so that they can blend in with their surroundings:
Cthulu?
This one is a flamboyant cuttlefish. They have evolved to a point where they can't really swim, so they walk along the bottom of the ocean. Unlike other cuttlefish, which try to hide from predators, this one is brightly colored. It can be like that because it is very poisonous. In fact, it is only of only three or four poisonous species in its branch of life (the blue ring octopus and the striped pajama squid being two of the others):

It's eating something.
Sea cucmbers will attempt to discourage potential predators by firing horrible sticky threads at them; if this doesn't work, they'll start puking their internal organs at the aggressor until they get freaked out and leave (I would). They also breathe through their anuses. Nature is awesome, also gross.

There's a reason why geoducks (pronounced "gooey ducks" for God knows what reason) look like dongs. Take a wild guess what that...thing is. =P

DISCOVERY CHANNEL FTW!
It's a feeding tube primarily; they suck seawater in, filter plankton out, and eject the waste water (and, presumably, whatever passes for poop for them) from another hole. It's not a penis. Geoducks don't really have shlongs, they're broadcast spawners. I think you've misunderstood whatever it was you saw on the Discovery Channel; those are not dudes in the business of telling lies!
The name's pronounced gooey-duck because "geoduck" is a now-entrenched misspelling of "gweduc," a Nisqaully word meaning "dig deep". The name makes sense, Whitey's just done messed up the spelling.

So, this is one of the strangest underwater creatures that I have seen. It has two tails, which oscillate up and down in order to propel the creature forward. They have two fins, though they are largely useless for propulsion, and are almost entirely used for grasping various objects. Most examples of this genus have two layers of skin. Water or air is trapped between the layers in order to insulate them. They also have a strange, transparent membrane over their eyes, which holds a pocket of air. These creatures cannot actually extract oxygen from the water, but they have odd organs which hold various breathable gases under high pressure. They must return to the surface from time to time to refill these organs. Finally, many examples of these creatures posses the ability to produce light, using some kind of electro-chemical process. The function of these lights is unknown.

I was reading about angler fish at work today; they have the most incredibly messed-up reproductive system I've ever seen. Male angler fish have no digestive system. When they're born, they have to track down a female and bite it in the side; it then proceeds to vomit some heinous enzymes that cause its head to fuse to the bitten lady-fish, allowing it to sustain itself. Its body then withers away until it's basically nothing but a set of fish nuts, pumping fish jizz into the fish lady when it detects certain hormonal triggers. NATURE!

Okay, we've had some good, typical monster fishes. Weird fish, cool fish, freaky fish, photoshopped fish.
But, we haven't seen anything... well... Bad
Until now.
Ladys and Gentlefish, I now introduce you to...
The Mantis Shrimp
(http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/images/o_scyllarus1.jpg)
Lemme show you how agressive these things are.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EEMeVSQWw0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EEMeVSQWw0) (There are tons of movies about these)
Now, I know that looks like a typical, elite mother nature fight....
There's one way to explain just how powerful these 11 inch shirmp are.
"Around 400 species of mantis shrimp have currently been described worldwide, which are commonly separated into two distinct groups determined by the manner of claws they possess:
Squilla mantis, showing the spearing appendages
Spearers are armed with spiny appendages topped with barbed tips, used to stab and snag prey and some have a blunt, calcified club on the elbow.
Smashers, on the other hand, possess a much more developed club and a more rudimentary spear (which is nevertheless quite sharp and still used in fights between their own kind); the club is used to bludgeon and smash their meals apart. The inner aspect of the dactyl (the terminal portion of the appendage) can also possess a sharp edge, with which the animal can cut prey while it swims.
Both types strike by rapidly unfolding and swinging their raptorial claws at the prey, and are capable of inflicting serious damage on victims significantly greater in size than themselves.
In smashers, these two weapons are employed with blinding quickness, with an acceleration of 10,400 g and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start. Because they strike so rapidly, they generate cavitation bubbles between the appendage and the striking surface. The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produce measurable forces on their prey in addition to the instantaneous forces of 1,500 N that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface, which means that the prey is hit twice by a single strike; first by the claw and then by the even bigger force from the collapsing cavitation bubbles that immediately follows. Even if the initial strike misses the prey, the resulting shock wave can be enough to kill or stun the prey.
.Some pet mantis shrimp have managed to break through their double-paned aquarium glass with a single strike from this weapon.
Many saltwater aquarists are currently caring for stomatopods across the world. In fact, some are even making vital discoveries of the behavior of certain species as well as defining certain aspects of others. These dedicated aquarists may play a major role in understanding the many mysteries involving the mantis shrimp. However, mantis shrimp are considered by many domestic marine aquarists as pests. They can often sneak into a tank hidden in rocks, and once there, they can feed on fish, corals, and smaller crustaceans. They are notoriously difficult to catch once established in a well stocked tank."
Wikipedia.
I happened upon a topic about these little buggers... There is some grand storytelling there. Probally embellished, but even so, these are some pretty awesone shrimp. (If only more people called me "shrimp")

I present thee the Pistol Shrimp! (http://www.hilavitkutin.com/2007/05/28/katkarapu-joka-ampuu-saksistaan-saaliin-tainnuttavia-aaniaaltoja/)
The snapping shrimp competes with much larger animals, like the sperm whale and beluga whale, for the title of 'loudest animal in the sea'. The shrimp snaps a specialized claw shut to create a cavitation wave that generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa at a distance of 4 cm from the claw. The pressure wave is strong enough to kill small fish.
The snap can also produce sonoluminescence from a collapsing bubble, also known as a cavitation bubble. As it collapses, the cavitation bubble reaches the surface temperature of the Sun.
Snapping shrimp have also been noted for their ability to reverse claws. When the snapping claw is lost, the missing limb will regenerate into a smaller claw and the original small claw will grow into a new snapping claw. Laboratory research has shown that severing the nerve of the snapping claw induces the conversion of the small claw, resulting in a shrimp with two large claws.
Nature pwns.

From seeing all of these images of weird looking fish, I can say that fact is most certainly stranger than fiction. We humans would have never believed such strange and fascinating creatures lived on our planet if we had never searched for them. Our world still hold many undiscovered creature yet to be discovered.

Epaulette shark! These monsters walk around on the ocean floor using their fins, which is pretty cool, but my favourite thing about them is that, in low-oxygen environments, they can increase their survivability by shutting off parts of their brains that they don't currently need. That is awesome!

Ooooooh shiiiiiiiiiit giant isopods! Essentially three-pound woodlice that live in deep deep ocean and scavenge dead stuff for dinners, and further proof that the oceans are full of demons.

Moray eels are terrifying! If you get bitten by one, it'll just hold on indefinitely, and you can't pull free because their teeth are angled inwards. You have to push further into its mouth and hope to either choke it or slide out of its terrible deathlock doom-jaws.

So, I was listening to the radio this morning, and they had a short piece on Moray Eels. It would seem that, at the back of their throats, Moray's have a second set of teeth, arranged on a second jaw. When they eat something, this second jaw shoots out from the back of the mouth, alien style, grabs the food, and pulls it in. There is a movie on NPR's website (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14194579), as well as a brief story and some pics.

You know, algae turns red when mad - saw something about that on Dirty Jobs. That would be a cool effect in the game, to annoy some algae, then see them slowly turn from green to red. Perhaps if you swim through a cluster of green algae, they slowly turn red. Dirty Jobs said that green means algae is happy, red means they're pissed.

That's a pretty cool idea!
Not sure it would be better as an entity that actually affects you or more of a background effect.

Fish like this will not survive in captivity. Sadly, human ignorance is to blame for it's death. It's body was probably oversaturated with oxygen since it's gills are designed to filter large amounts due to the low oxygen at the depth levels it usually lives in.
-
actually, I think the fishermen may have found it near the surface. So if they did, the animal may have already been sick or dying.

You know, these things just live there and skim the food the fish is eating off. The fish probly dosnt notice. However, I am willing to bet the things the fish are eating dont appreciate being eaten by the fish then being eaten agian by the isopod. Also, I think it looks kinda like my alchaolic but lovably gruff uncle Paulie.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=516329&in_page_id=1770
And check out these glowworms (not exactly underwater, but in a cave).

well... not a weird underwater creature, but ...

I both wish I could live there, and wish it didn't exist at the same time.

So you wish YOU didn't exist, niiiice.

Wow, that was one strange house. But still it kind of looks quite comfy :)

I can't imagine the level of upkeep that house must require.

HA! I still have a toy of that thing. Along with a special edition black & gold original Megazord. I used to collect them when I was like, 10. I didn't keep the best care of them though, after all I was 10. I liked to play with toys.
-
Hah, I have all the next gen things, The White Tiger (with white ranger) and the 5 other zords, including the big turtle zord, still have them all, on me planks above mah computah, I've always liked Power Rangers. So much that I used to cut out the pictures of them out of the TV guide and paste them in a big album, also full with other power ranger stuff.
But that was many years ago, I'll never sell the Zords though.

Some big ass creatures here: http://a.abcnews.com/images/Technology/ap_sting_ray_080429_ssh.jpg (http://a.abcnews.com/images/Technology/ap_sting_ray_080429_ssh.jpg)
I always get a little sad when I see these things get caught. Excited to know they exist, but sad to know they're not roaming the waters anymore. :'(
And some absolutely beautiful nudibranch photos (http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/06/nudibranchs/doubilet-photography) courtesy of National Geographic.
-
I liked the nudibranchs in Aquaria, they were fun creatures. But looking at these photos of the source material they seem rather unexciting by comparison...that bright blue one is pretty.
-
Yeah, you could probably do an entire game about nudibranches! ^-^
-
There were nudibranches? I don't remember, sorry...was it in the snail cave?
-
Nope, they are these invincible creatures in the Kelp Forest that move when you sing.
-
or when you play briar pool with them ;)

I've just found an interesting piece of film, just watch out for the orange fellow, do you think that he would drop some borsch for us perhaps? lol

Sorry Chibi but that is a very old photo to me and because it's a hoax created by Barnum I think? then it doesn't really fit in this thread. Perhaps you could start a new thread on made up sea monsters and hoaxes? :)

What about the post about the land-based feminist, hmm? That was a hoax, although a funnier one. Here are a few interesting creatures to satisfy your exquisite taste ;):
The Cow Fish
(http://www.thetropicalfishplace.com/catalog/images/Cow%20Fish.jpg) So that's where Naija gets her milk!
El Dorado (Not the city) ;) The most beautiful fish I've seen.
It would be amazing to have Derek paint one of those.
EDIT: (I know the Dorado isn't weird, but wanted to include it anyway) Sorry Silver!

I don't know Chibi they both look a little weird to me and weird isn't just associated with ugly, so the dorado is a beaty but it is also rather weird with that bull like head, and the cow fish is just really cute looking lol
Land based feminist, now there is a rarety, especially around here for some reason but they were rife in Manchester back in 1974 :o but they really are weird lol

Are you going to post it on the website? BTW, glad to see you back on the forums (even if it's for the last time) We were missing you. Welcome back!

Love it Derek lol just steer him clear of Y-fronts will you though lol

Thanks, guys! ;)

that's just beautiful Derek, can totally see him clomping and squishing around :)

And I have to say, the Preditory Tunicate in the game looks exactly like its real life counterpart!

Just so long as it doesn't latch on to me if I get in the sea it's ok even if it isn't the prettiest creature on Gods Earth lol

I assume that many of you folks out there have met these adorable little creatures before. Just one underwater creature, though, and it's depicted leaping out of water... hmm. Anyhow: enjoy.

The most beautiful fish I've seen.
If you want a beautiful fish... Check out the Lunare Wrasse
(http://www.scuba-equipment-usa.com/marine/FEB06/images/Thalassoma_lunare.jpg)
When I get my 180G dream saltwater aquarium set up some day, I'm definitely getting one... they're fascinating fish with a knack for mischief.
Also... I know somebody has already posted a pic of a peacock mantis shrimp (it's on the first page)... but due to the fact that stomatopods (mantis shrimp aren't actually shrimp, they're stomatopods) are the coolest animals in the world... I wanted to add this link www.blueboard.com/mantis/ (http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/) Check out the stuff under introduction on the right hand side... they're amazing creatures
-
Jesus Christ. :o Did that cute little shrimp really slash a man's finger to the bone? :)
-
(http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/4716/shrimpmantis.jpg)
Divers call mantis shrimp "thumb splitters." The impact from a blow from the claws and head is only slightly less than the impact of a .22 caliber bullet.
Mantis shrimp can grow up to about ten inches in length and are fast moving. They eat crabs, anemones, and fish, among other things, and if kept in an aquarium with other fish, they will eventually eat them all. They dig burrows and live in crevices in reefs and rocks.
There are two types of Mantis Shrimp; One armed with a hammerlike club while the other, armed with a sharp spear. The Mantis Shrimp in the photo is the later.

Yes some of the larger shrimps can certainly do some damage chibi, cute does not always equate harmless, koala bears are cute but they can give a nasty bite and they are very grumpy animals. Also the giant panda can kill and stay miles away from the polar bear :o

It was a joke ... I am well aware of the danger of anthropomorphizing animals. :P ;)

True. I don't think it could/should be used to create eternal youth for humans (which is ultimately a terrible idea), but it's still cool for science!

I wouldn't mind being 21 again but you can keep whole the idea of going through adolesece again! :o No way I want to be a teen again, even though the 60's and 70's were great being 13 or 19 wasn't :p

Yeah! Rampant overpopulation, overflowing prisons as people kill one another for space or inheritance (can't just wait for you rich grandmother to die now), complete disruption of the economy, dissolution of the generational balance that keeps things like employment, health insurance, and real estate stable.....
Throw in the ethical and philosophical questions that would inevitably have to come with it (do we give eternal life only to the rich? should we bring dying people back by giving them magical youth potion? do bad people get to live forever too? does life even have a purpose if you get to keep re-doing it?), and you've got yourself a great time living forever on a really shitty planet!
-
Not forgetting the simple bordom of living so long that life eventually becomes just too much to bear and suicide will become an everyday occurance....

Given eternity, these problems fade away as incremental solutions erode them to nothing over long periods of time.
Not forgetting the simple bordom of living so long that life eventually becomes just too much to bear and suicide will become an everyday occurance....
I don't think this would occur. But given very long life, I suppose anything is possible. If it did come to pass, I don't see how it's tragic - isn't a suicide in your scenario the sign of the fullest possible life?
-
Not really, just that you're tired of it..
-
Not forgetting the simple bordom of living so long that life eventually becomes just too much to bear and suicide will become an everyday occurance....
Chasm City (by Alastair Reynolds), one of the best SF books around, predicts that immortals won't openly commit suicide; rather, they'll have increasingly dangerous hobbies. :)

Most would Chibi but a lot would find a way to end things.
But back to that jelly (and I don't for one minute believe that they could find the secret of eternal life for us from it, it's too different) they might find a way to regenerate body parts but even that is a very remote possibility.

I have no clue what you just posted Chibi, but I completely agree on the hermaphrodite thing. >_>

The sea slug reminds me of nothing more than whipped cream with Oreo's piled on top. :)
-
For some reason sea slugs are amongst the most colourful and outlandish sea creatures, and they have the most disgusting defense , just never try picking one up :o
-
Oh yeah, the intestine-vomiting. Did you ever try to pick one up, silverflagon?
-
LoL chibi...it actually does look like whipped cream and oreos. that reminds me of this dessert my mom used to make...

and to alphasoldier...heck yes! jellyfish is my fave animal. i think that'd be so cool to have in your own home aquarium...though incredibly expensive to keep n_n
-
Will Smith in 7lbs had a jellyfish in a tube...
And that may not be a sea creature... but I don't find it all that tasty looking.
Especially the 'dirt' part of the name, makes me think you just took a bunch of Oreo's, crumbled them all, put them in a bucket of sand and started stirring.
I bet it's real tasty when you taste it though... I hope...
-
Oh yeah, the intestine-vomiting. Did you ever try to pick one up, silverflagon?
No sadly not, and not because I would like to try it, but because I have always wanted to do some diving and so far I have had no chance to try it :( But I have seem someone do it in one of the BBC wildlife progs and it looked evil and nasty to clean of yuck! lol
ps. My wanting to dive has a lot to do with my love of Aquaria lol
-
ps. My wanting to dive has a lot to do with my love of Aquaria lol
So do you want to dive because you played aquaria, or did you play aquaria because you wanted to dive?
-
That recipe sounds a lot like what my family calls dirt pie. I suspect it's nearly the same; I don't think they'd use pistachio but whatever. Either way, it's damned tasty and a fine way to top off a big meal. Sweet without being heavy on your stomach.
-
Especially Hulu. BTW, there are a lot of TV shows on Hulu about Weird Underwater Creatures. ;)
ahh there we go. nice segue to get back on topic there
here's some recently spotted horrid underwater creatures:

That's awesome.

ps. My wanting to dive has a lot to do with my love of Aquaria lol
So do you want to dive because you played aquaria, or did you play aquaria because you wanted to dive?
I have always wanted to swim in the sea, clear sea well away from tthe murky waters around the UK and the Red sea would be a dream come true. I just love the sea :D
-
Those are great inkblob where did you find them? Or don't tell me... You also knit in your spare time :o

The turtle almost looks like the old grumpy sea turtle in Aquaria.

ya i read an article about the hexapus awhile ago. i believe it was discovered and taken into captivity because it only had 6 legs. i'm guessing its a sort of freak animal...like an albino snake kinda thing.

I'm learning how to knit but not at the make my own patterns, or anywhere close, but my significant other is very skilled with the crochets. it's one of my longterm goals to be proficient at a fibre art to this degree tho :)

Perhaps one day inkblob? lol
I can also crotchet and even work without a pattern but it bores me, that kind of thing is just not for me but we were expected to learn it all instead of painting. :(

I don't know if I should be amazed or disgusted...
I mean... I CAN SEE IN ITS HEAD... ... ...I MUST BE PSYCHIC!

But a very awesome fish none the less, makes me wonder that if we try hard enough to look at the back of our heads that they, after about 100 million years, will become invisible too.

gotta be quick! digg, boingboing, milk&cookies, all good sources for weirdness :D some swear by reddit and slashdot but I'd rather stab a spoon in my thigh then frequent those sites
-
That's pretty strong - stabbing a spoon in your leg is excruciatingly painful (Just see here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBKsJ9XFWcA)) WARNING - Contains cartoon violence (and not your wishy washy video-game rating stuff). ;)
-
Awesome fish! Better its head, than its digestive system I guess? ;D
-
Yeah, being able to see only inside it's head is still less disgusting than being able to see into the whole thing... although I think that would make me want one more. ;)

That is a deep deep ocean out there, and I am beginning to think that nothing we could find in space can rival our own sea for strangeness :o
-
Oh man, that fish squid things wit hthe cape makes me think of a certain dinosaur, the one in Jurassic Park with the dino who had the big collar that he could also suddenly let appear.
Also, I'm not too certain about the human fish... the top looks pretty human, but I don't think the nose looks a lot like human ones.

as scientists always do :P find a new specie and kill it.
I doubt they killed it just for research, since that fish usually lives in deep water. It was in shallow water, so I guess it was almost dying? Just like the prehistoric shark that Derek posted long ago.

Methinks you've won the thread. ;) That is the strangest underwater creature I've seen. :o

Yeah, I don't think a gelatinous fish is very weird, it's just that it's rare to find it.

"At first I was scared because of this huge thing in the water. But then I decided to jump in..."
Never noticed that part of the interview...mad props to Mr. Brazilian Science Guy.

It totally does! Just needs to more blueish and three nuclei. I still love the baby one in Super Metroid.

These pictures aren't getting less trippy no matter how much I've seen them again

This isn't really a real picture of anything, but it pretty much explains some 'fun' stuff.

Ugh! Nice finding, Alpha. (I know oatmeal, but haven't seen this one yet.)

I think my favorite one is web design hell. It also makes me cry a little.

You mean the one with the horrid website at the end? :3

The very same. It makes me happy and sad at the same time because the client there reminds me of the people I work for more than a little bit.

I don't think this has been seen here before. It doesn't look weird...but it is
(http://www.mnn.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/node-gallery-display/jellyfish.jpg)
This type of jellyfish can grow and entirely new body when injured. Not just grow a limb or anything like some reptiles, but a completely new body.
You know what this means....TIME LORD JELLYFISH!
An article about them can be found here (http://green.yahoo.com/blog/guest_bloggers/26/the-world-s-only-immortal-animal.html)
-
It's weird enough for me.
-
Sounds like that jellyfish is going to be tortured for the rest of his endless life to figure out how it's happening, poor thing.
I bet that eventually they'll just figure it has a long lifespan and that the renewing of cells thing is something that can be done online a limited amount of times.

Sometimes a creature is not weird because of its appearance...

(http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz313/Gririe/humboldt-squid.jpg) this seems perfect topic discussion here. Who here is familiar with the Humboldt squid war? Oddly enough fishermen and biologists get into very heated discussions turns out. Especially in as far down as northern Mexico all the way up to the infamous Humboldt California where the so called "Red Devils" found it the easiest to make their oceanic homes. The fishermen there also refer to them as "Man-eating Squids" due to numerous fishing mishaps. However biologists have discovered that this octopus violence is in fact, anger based. Humboldt aren't naturally aggressive towards man. They are a pack animal, which surprised marine biologists, normally squid are lone hunters. Additionally, and like a few other social squids (cuddlefish i believe), Humboldt communicate with one another via pigment changes in their skin, giving them a bio-luminescent look as they tell one another where prey or other creatures are. When not hunted they will play with humans, tugging on divers for a few feet, or stealing loose pieces of equipment to see what it may be or if it is edible. there are no documented incidents of unprovoked attacks on humans by Humboldts. When angered they turn a vibrant red color and these powerful six foot squid become lethal, usually seen when fishermen try to catch one. Here however they also can be seen doing something not typically attributed to the animal kingdom; mercy killing. Rather than allow a fellow squid to be captured they will pull it from the hook, and in several cases, the fisherman as well, killing both. Im on the squid's side but many people demonize them. I"ll try to dig up some better photos

For some reason, when I saw the tongue eating one (again), I was suddenly reminded of the scene in Finding Nemo when one of the pelicans opens his mouth and Marlin and Dory are clinging onto his tongue and screaming.

It lives thousands of feet under water and they decided to put it in a park? How cruel, unthoughtful, and just plain wrong!

I'll take them Isopods with these here Russian Invertebrates from the White Sea. All pictures belong to Alexander Semenov and most of my facts were pulled from the article written by Michele Collet here: http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/news-under-white-sea-alexander-semenov?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+environmentalgraffiti+%28Environmental+Graffiti%29 (http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/news-under-white-sea-alexander-semenov?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+environmentalgraffiti+%28Environmental+Graffiti%29)
*see this link for the second sunstar image from the passage refrence below

And to start off the weirdness how about a shrimp; with no exoskeleton. he's called the skeleton shrimp more because of his looks, something like a cross between an inchworm (during locomotion), a walking stick (while resting) and a praying mantis while hunting. they are small enough to blend perfectly with the local sea grass. Next on the list is a four million year old veteran of the sea, a rare brachiopod, Semenov has caught a wonderful image of the creature's digestive organ known as its lophophore. According to Collet's research (also gathered by Semenov and other scientists) this variety has survived as it seems that crustaceans and fish dislike the taste of them. They mention that sibling species have died off, perhaps with speculation due to a tastier flesh >:D. Our next White Sea guest may feel vaguely familiar, nicknamed the sandworm, Nerei Pellagica is a rather large invertebrate growing lengths up to 40 centimeters and in width almost as wide around as your thumb. The frill like tendrils on its side are twofold in function, acting as multiple lungs as well as paddle-like oars that it uses to move through the water around it. The follower up may make you lose your lunch while trying to get its own. Nereis Virens not only is fairly unattractive due to many folds of skin, when hunting has the mildly disturbing habit of throwing its entire pharynx and mouth forward to its meal. the first image is the critter's face the second his attack on either the Semenov's camera or prey off camera. Our next White Sea guest is a luminescent sea slug whose spine colors depend upon what it eats and is very common. This next russian specimen is actually unidentified creature called an amphipoda, of which there are some 230 species in the White Sea. Aphipoda are shell-less crustaceans whose legs are distincly different unlike their isopod cousins. Returning to the sea slugs here is another wonderful example, this one bears a green digestive system and is fairly rare where the second image of its golden brown cousin is of a much more common species. Our next guest is rather tricky because it looks like a luminescent flower, its actually a plankton eating predator that is only 3-4 mm in size. This next gorgeous find by Semenov is the Lepidonotus Squamatus which have twelve scales. Here you see the green scales of a female, males would be a pale color due the the semen they carry. Next runner up is an image Semenov took of the skin of a sunstar. A common sea star which holds the title for the fastest of its kind, and will devour anything, including other sunstars. I also found a regular image of one on wiki for which i've provided linkage* . Another of Semenov's White Sea Beauties would be the predatory juvenile sea slug called the Sea Angel, they match their metabolism to their immediate prey the Sea butterfly. This creature gained its name from its podal lobes that look like black wings while it beats them through the water. They are about the size of a lentil. Now hopefully you aren't tired of reading yet, and we shall see if this doesn't take up a page O0. Next on the list is a Metridium Sea Anemone that has a central stalk surounded by its other long tendrils. However this specimen has purple tentacles, making it rare, normally they sport orange or yellow tendrils, Semenov once again outdoing himself. Now this next image there are two creatures, and if it weren't for the counterpart's eyes you might miss the odd little guy, reportedly they look like small bears or elephant embryos, they are called Limanpontia, the two here are adults. They are generally brown but others can be lighter, as per the more visible one in Semenov's picture. This next specimen was dubbed the iSlug by Semenov, it is fairly common and its red color comes from its food source once again.
This next one doesn't really make the creature score but it sucks (somewhat literally) to be a microscopic critter near this interesting little plant http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_9399000/9399877.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_9399000/9399877.stm)

Wall-o-text and purdy pictures, great post! O:
I love the funky colors of the underwater world, now if only I wasn't colorblind.
-
Awe. Fully or partially? (I'm partially colorblind)
-
I can't define them, like.... give me a blue and purple pencil and tell me to point out the purple pencil and I will, give me a blue and a dark blue pencil and ask me to point out the purple one and I'll point at the blue one.
I've learned through the years that I'm not so much blind to them as long as I use logic to define them. xD
Also I hate April fools day.
-
Those are some fascinating pictures, BishopKayn! I feel inspired to go make something.

Interesting!
You know, that reminds me--XKCD did this great big survey (http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/) a while back about identifying colors. It is pretty hilarious. You might find it interesting as well.
Also I hate April fools day.
April Fools' Day has the worst bad parts of literally any regular celebration I have ever encountered. I think everyone hates it, at least a little. (It can be occasionally hilarious or otherwise really interesting when it permits normally strait-laced institutions to loosen up and tell some obvious jokes, though. So, against my better judgement, I still rank it as like my fifth-favorite holiday. Even although great swathes of it do tend to inspire white-hot burning rage in me.)
-
I'm the same way alpha. I have a hard time with deep blues and greens. I had a pair of green sweat pants I constantly called black they were that dark. But I learned much like yourself to define the colors I saw through what other people had told me they were. Though the very slight shades I tend to misname just because they are too close to the zones of light that make it hard for me to differentiate. Yeah April fools can be evil.
-
I've worn a pink shirt for years before figuring out it was pink, not blue.
And here I wondered why I was being called gay. Yeah, colors are tricky.
Also today was a disaster, I felt like stabbing one of my coworkers and heading off.
-
Sorry to hear it. I hate days like that. Just pissed you off too much huh?

Looked through the pages, and I'm pretty sure nobody brought this one up:
