Title: graphical overview of Aquaria recipes
Post by: archy on January 29, 2011, 03:15:31 pm
Hi everyone,

I'm new to Aquaria (a friend got me the Humble Bundle 2 as a gift), and I like it. I especiall like that it runs under Linux!

I found it a bit hard to keep track of all the different recipes in the game, though.
The comprehensive recipe list at StrategyWiki helped somewhat, but I thought a graphical overview - sorted by recipe effect - would be more helpful.

So I created one myself (using Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/)), and uploaded it to the StrategyWiki page, in case someone else might find it useful: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Aquaria/Recipes (scroll to the very end of the page!).

Tell me what you think!

PS: I also have it as a combined PDF file (all 5 pages in one file), which I personally think is the most useful format. However, it's 4.7 MB, which exceeds the upload limit of StrategyWiki. If someone want's it, tell me where I can upload it!

Have you tried zipping the combined PDF file? I'd imagine you could shave off 25% or so on the file size.

Other than that, nice job! I really like the recipe sheets. It looks professional.

Xiagan, Echolocating, thanks for the positive feedback!

You're right, ZIP reduced the file size somewhat (RAR even more)... However, it turns out StrategyWiki doesn't allow uploading any kind of zipped files...

7zip? Changing file extensions? If it works, they'll probably get mad at you. Try MediaFire.

If someone want's it, tell me where I can upload it!
Try Dropbox (http://db.tt/JHvAeSp) It's a free hosting site that comes with handy software that'll create a folder on your computer. Anything you put in the folder, it'll automatically upload to the site. There are also "public" folders on which you can upload files that other people can download, for your PDF.

The above link is a referral link, it'll give you and me an extra 250mb. Feel free to just go to Dropbox.com if you don't want to do the referral thing.

Oh and the recipe diagrams look amazing btw, very handy!

Thanks for the tip, I created an account there (using your referral link of course :)) and uploaded the PDF: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20224042/Aquaria_Recipes.pdf

Enjoy!

Seeing you can zoom in with that PDF, I was wondering if you ever thought of making an actual "recipe" list, as in... when looking at the Loaf of Life, figuring out how much ingredients you need. And perhaps explaining step by step.
Heck, if you wanna go really far, one could probably make a 'fake' cook book with actual instructions on how to make all that, or even better, a real one that'd work! xD

I don't understand what you mean.

Being able to look at a certain recipe and instantly see what base ingredients are needed and which cooking steps are involved, is exactly why I created this graphical recipe overview. (That, and being able to effectively compare the "costs" of different recipes with similar effects.)

What do you mean by "actual recipe list", and what use cases would it allow which my graphical overview (or the online recipe list at StrategyWiki) doesn't allow?

Erm, nevermind I guess, I'm not being clear about it and I can't really figure out how to say it better.
All I thought that would be neat is to write down for every recipe how much ingredients it needs and what steps (previous recipes) you need to make.
Though this is totally not necessary, I was just curious as to how much that loaf of life really costs... and if it's worth it.

Oh, I see. So the recipe for say... shark fin soup would be something like;

((Oil+Meat)+Meat)+Shark Fin

I think it would be interesting to see but probably not quite as useful for most people. You'd want to be pretty familiar with the recipes to keep track of which finished products you're combining.
