Title: Software to create Aquaria?
Post by: Land Whale on February 20, 2007, 03:27:14 pm
What programme or software do you guys use to create Aquaria?

Is the software user-friendly for you guys?

If I want to make my first game, would you recommend this software? Any pros & cons?

I think it's a programming language, C++ or something like that.

I'm sure Alec or Derek could fill you up on exactly what it is.

Yeah, the game is programmed in a language called C++ (http://www.parashift.com/c++-faq-lite/).
We also make use of a few C/C++ libraries: OpenGL, Directx, Bass (http://www.un4seen.com/), TinyXML (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tinyxml), LUA (http://www.lua.org/)

To make C++ applications, you need a compiler and IDE. Dev-C++ (http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html) is a good free combo.

If you're just starting out, there are lots of options... Derek's game Eternal Daughter (http://derekyu.com/games.html) was made with a program called Multimedia Fusion, which makes it easier to get up and running on a project, but limits the kind of games you can make.

Allegro  (http://allegro.cc/)is a nice C library for making 2D games.

For me it was:
QBasic -> C/Allegro -> C++/Allegro -> C++Directx/OpenGL

Are you using Dev-C++ for this project?

For me it was QBasic -> VBasic -> coding frontend for HL CTF mod that never saw the light of day -> making some odd little text and RPG games with QB and VB -> realizing I'm better at playing games than making them.

First of all hello to everybody, I'm new here :)
Second, sorry for my bad english :P

I would like to ask you, Derek, what are the staff you are using for drawing this gorgeous 2d graphics you are making for the game. Are you using a graphic tablet? Which one? And software? Photoshop, Gimp, Corel?

I'm also really interested in the steps you follow from the original sketch till the final image. Will be great some tutorial or video, any piece of advice or whatever. All will be really appreciated.

You are an inspiration for every illustrator!
