Title: I need some help...
Post by: Alec on February 19, 2010, 09:40:47 pm
Yo homies, so I'm working on a presentation/training course for wannabe game composers here in Winnipeg. (with my friends Kenley and Danny B)

One of the things I'd like to do is pop open an Aquaria track in FL Studio and show how it was put together.

Buuut I need help picking the track. Does anyone have any preferences? Or ones that you'd think would be more interesting to look at than others?

Thanks in advance for your help.  ^-^

Even though I'd have absolutely no favorite because pretty much every song you composed is amazing, I'd at least go with Lost to the waves, seeing it has lyrics in them and a voice, which usually means you need to do at least SOME adaption in the music to make it work with the voice.

Next to that I'd pick either the more known songs from Aquaria, Bright or Open waters...  OR a boss fight song, simply because pretty much every game has boss fight themes, which one I have no clue. Sorry that I can't be much more of a help >_>

Maybe I can look at "HotF" and one other one...?

So many to choose from...
I'm interested in the seahorse ruins track, I forget what it's called.

My favorite hands down is Open Waters 1.  That or the title.  It just epitomizes Aquaria for me.  It's got those haunting tones and that sense of exploration in every note.

So, if you're set on Arboreal/HotF, then you'd probably want something very different to contrast a different style.  Since HotF is one of the more rhythmically-driven pieces of the OST, I'd say go for something more melodic.

Lost in the Waves is a good choice then.  I'd like to suggest Icy Waters, though, because it's a far simpler song.  At least three very distinct melodies at once, plus a simple string line.  It depends on if you want to go for something iconic but complex (Lost in the Waves) or an easy example (Icy Waters).

Yeah, I think it depends, but something more rhythm-driven compared with something more melody-driven would work. Could also do a comparison between overworld themes and battle themes.

I'd say "The Traveller" or any of the Open Waters for an example of melodic overworld themes (or something a little simpler like "Remains" to show how to set a mood), and something more energetic, maybe "Mithala", which can also show how altering the theme during different stages of a battle can help alter the mood of the battle itself.

That's my take, anywy. Best of luck on the presentation!

I LOVED the tune that plays in Mithalas City. A gorgeous tune.

Yeah I like remains and the traveller. Remains seems like it might be a bit simple... but the traveller is definitely one of the songs that really set this game out for me. :D
