Title: Does anyone still have the first release?
Post by: NeatNit on February 19, 2010, 02:05:23 pm
I'd really like to see how Aquaria was when it first came out. I especially want to see what crappy map system everyone was complaining about :)

I've only had Aquaria since it came on Steam.

There's not a lot of difference, just some bugs which are fixed and a map system that only shows you the current area you were in.
Second you could duplicate food and bug the game out by skippingt key points in the game.

Either way, if you're still interested you could wait for Alec's reply or search for it in certain spots...

I spent about a year making changes.

Some of the more difficult changes included the map system (markers, tracking what parts of an area you'd seen, etc), widescreen (the original version was 4:3... this involved lots and lots of code changes and a lot of map editing), a built-in help document (that grows as you go through the game), automatic map hints (this involved adding new content to the maps).

There was a bunch of other stuff too, like subtly redesigning levels to make some puzzles easier to solve etc.
