HAY GUYS!! TELL ME WHAT THE STORIES ABOUT, LOOKS GREAT!
Just kidding. I was curious as to how the story for Aquaria came about. Who wrote it? Was it one of you, or both of you working together? Was this a story that had been brewing in your brain(s) for a while and this is the final fruition, or did it come to you as you were setting up the gameplay? Any insight into this process would be most fascinating. The storytelling aspects of video games absolutely intrigues me, and I hope to one day research and write a few academic papers about video games as a storytelling medium. This, though, is just to satisfy my curiosity.

We developed the main story concepts together. Alec wrote most of the final dialogue, however. :D
The process was long and difficult, but also quite fun. The story definitely evolved with the rest of the game. We'll explain more in one of the later "Days of Aquaria" (maybe tomorrow!), but the game used to be much more complex both in terms of its narrative and game mechanics. We spent a lot of our development streamlining both, and we're quite happy with the end results.
A lot of the themes in the game's story mirror the game development, which is fairly unique to video games, I think. This became a conscious decision for us but the way it came about was unconscious, I think. I have to say, I played through the game again recently, and it actually hit me pretty hard.
Sorry, I realize that last part seems pretty cryptic. But I'll have to leave it at that. ;)

typos...yeah, sure... ;)

Alec missed one...you spent time streamlined stuff? :D
The story sounds intriguing. If it makes me want to cry when I think about it after I'm done then I'll be satisfied. ;)

Sorry, I am way too tired to type properly!
Let's just keep it simple for now: we spent quite a bit of time on the story/backstory. ;)
