Title: Our Favorite Downloadable Games
Post by: Tom on February 02, 2007, 01:32:56 pm
Hey guys, I figure if we post links to our favorite downloadable games we can save on individual leg work. There's too many to try out and it's a hassle  spending 3 hours downloading a game that isn't really that fun.  Free and shareware are both good.

Crimsonland (Shareware):  http://crimsonland.reflexive.com/
Shoot at a ton of monsters with really over the top weapons. Twitch gaming boiled down as simple as possible.  ;D

Warning Forever (Freeware)
Lots of really fun shooters but this is my favorite from this programmer. Fight a shooter boss over and over with him evolving to defeat your playing style.

Tom, I added some screenshots to your post - hope you don't mind.  I love screenshots! :D

Doom the Roguelike (http://doom.chaosforge.org (http://doom.chaosforge.org)) puts one of my favorite games into a genre that I really admire.  One of the simplest, most fun RL's out there.  And I may or may not be working on a graphical tileset for it in my limited free time (see my avatar)!

Two downloadable games come to mind.

* The first is Star Control II, which also happens to be my favorite game of all time. (I'm hoping Mass Effect will change that, but I doubt it)
If you haven't played Star Control II yet, you are missing out on one hell of a ride. And no, playing the game and dieing on the first battle doesn't count.

Windows Download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sc2/uqm-0.6.2-installer.exe?download)

Mac OS Download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sc2/uqm-0.6.2-macosx.dmg?download)

Link with extra music and Linux downloads (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php)

What makes it so good?
Star Control is a rare creation that uses every feature in its game in the very best way possible, except maybe voice acting. I can tell you now, you've never played a game like this before. The game is built on a galactic scale, which actually makes you feel lost in space at times. Exploring the universe has never been more rewarding. The music fits perfectly, the dialog is outstanding and you quickly find yourself pulled into this game. No game has created a more impressive experience with a game that lets you be the character and not put you in the feet of a pre-created one. Back when it was first released, it was years ahead of its time. Non-linearity like this was non-existent, such a verity of intelligent life, which is brilliant in every way, was never made until this day.

Eventually, this game could not run on current PCs, so a few dedicated fans along with some of the original developers had worked very hard to release a freeware version. They are still fixing bugs all the time, but hey, when have you ever heard about developers coming back to help the fans for free? Such a great game surly was created with love and now, if you didn't try this game, do it now.

For more information about it Click here (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/)

* The second game which comes to mind is Eternal Daughter. Yeah, you should know it if you're in these forums.

Download here (http://www.derekyu.com/games/ed.zip)

What makes it so good?
This is the greatest example of a single player, freeware, game. The game is not the average platformer, but not something evolutionary either. However, this is one of its strongest points. Many gamers have played 2D platformers for years. Slowly following the next chapters in the better franchises. As hardware became stronger, graphics improved along with it.  Inevitably, Adventure games and Platformers, which are rarely found these days, suffered from graphical improvements. Eternal Daughter brought to us what we all learned to love over the years and miss as time went by.

Eternal Daughter introduces an original fantasy world which would put to shame many triple-A titles. It's musical track is something that you can't imagine playing without once you heard it, unlike many games where you would rather put that Winamp to use. The characters and creatures are all unique and great in their own way. The art direction for this game is perfect and is something you have to see yourself to appreciate. And finally, it's challenging. Many games seem to forget that, they either create easy or cheesy. This game might be a bit though for some, but you just want to come back for more.

About both these games:
Both of these games deserve a special award that almost every story-based game f*cks up. They both have an outstanding climactic buildup, which make you know that you just played a beautiful game. Developers should learn from these games. When you finish a game, you want to be rewarded for what you did. Building a climax for that moment and putting a great ending are the key.

Someone had to post it:
Cave Story
(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3194/cavestorylbrthvn1.png) (http://imageshack.us)
The game is definitely awesome. The graphics and music seem old-fashioned, but they are brilliant in a way only gamers can appreciate. The world is brilliantly crafted 2D level design, challenging and full of lovely detail and secrets. From the floaty-light feeling of the controls, to the ever-stronger arsenal of weapons, Pixel takes old game conventions and merges them into a pretty unique experience. I've played through countless times, and not just to get to the secret ending. The story is actually worth paying attention to. Memorable characters are expressed through just a handful of pixels and a load of superbly-translated text. And theme music. Balrog is awesome. And it gives me that funny feeling in my tummy.

Just thought i'd add this.
it's called Flow
http://www.crazygames.com/game/flow
FLOW-test your attention span

This was one I had next for posting.  I got beat though with Derek's post on TIGs. ???  And it brought out the pirana and some good talks too.  This game looks nice.  It's one of those "I could have thought this up" games.  (hope you don't have a short attention span).  And the guy, Jenova Chen http://www.thatgamecompany.com/ , who did this for his "MFA thesis"   :o    got a nice deal on Sony's PS3.  I don't know Block Sum....   ehh?  or not.

It's downloadable.  It just has a nice flowing, soothing feel to it.

I could see this maybe on the DS and Wii too.   or not.

There's no need to port Block Sum to the console... every time I close my eyes, I'm rearranging numbered blocks with my MIND. Its been inadvertently ported to my braaaain.   :D :D :D

X Operations - It doesn't look as good as half life 2 but I thought this game had a goofy childish appeal going for it. Instead of one long narrative you play it one little mission at a time and the themes are all over the place.  My favorite one involved using a Rambo type machine gun to escape from an underground tunnel full of zombies.

First of all, im new here, so i greet all of you \o Aquaria looks like its going to be something phenomenal. But enough o' me babbling, ill get to this messages point.

Zombies, who doesnt like them? Or atleast like chopping or blowing them to pieces? As we all know, zombie games are usually structured with a hero who is armed from toe to teeth, and pitted against hordes of zombies and other monstrosities. Survival crisis Z is just that, minus the armed from toe to teeth detail. You will have to do missions either to the SWAT, the rebels, or stay neutral and help the average joe's out to get your cash. With the dough, you can buy new gear and ammunition to your weapons. Eating and sleeping is not must, but highly recommended, as fatigue can make you hallucinate, and thats not good when fending off a pack of zombies.

The atmosphere in the game is just amazingly well done, you will be filling your pants in some of the abandoned underground compounds. Zombies (and zombie dogs) jump through windows, puke blood (and worms, which will suck your blood for a while if they attach), turn survivors into more zombies etc. It is truly a horrifying feeling when your companion starts to complain that he is not feeling well in a dark place.

The graphics might turn some of you down, but screenshots really dont do honor to this great game. I seriously suggest you try.

Flow is amazing.  I played the hell out of that for like 3 days straight.  Survival Crisis Z is also quite good fun.  Unfortunately, as of right now I really don't have anything to add to this thread.  Well... how about Alien Shooter (http://www.sigma-team.net/)?  If you like Crimsonland, you can't help but love AS.  Worst name ever, but a really, really fun game.  The sequel (http://alienshooter.cdvusa.com/) isn't quite out yet, and not yet available for download either, but apparently it will be in the relatively near future.

Oddly enough, no screenshots of the sequel have enemies in them.  Just huge piles of goop after they've all been slaughtered.  =)

Oh yes... i must shed some light to maybe the best indie adventure game series ever.

Most of the games are centered on a cat burglar named trilby, a gentleman thief, who gets oddly imprisoned in a manor in 5 Days A Stranger. The story continues in 7 Days a sceptic, that puts you in the shoes of michael, a psychiatrist of a scout ship, 198 years in the future from 5DAS. The next two games, Trilby's Notes and 6 Days a sacrifice happen in the present time.

A word of warning, some stuff in these games are not suitable for the faint of heart.

Pleasant gaming moments... watch out for the Tall man  ;)

If you count abandonware, there are plenty of things. If you want something which is free but can't exactly enjoy the couple of extra features of registering, or you're gonna pirate it later, I recommend Flatspace or Flatspace II. They're at http://www.lostinflatspace.com.

I did some hacking of the game myself, now I got a 16 tonne ship using a 240 tonne weapon. It can take down spacestations, even, which is a fave pasttime.

Flatspace is quite cool. My first character died a minute after starting tho.

I was going to ask a shadow moth to help me repair my hyperdrive (Which was damaged in a collision with an asteroid), but accidentally pressed the wrong button, and ended up on the choice: Request the captain to drop all cargo.

Well, obviously the captain was not happy with that, and started blasting away. I did get him after a lengthy match, but the joy was brief, as it seemed he had called for friends. You may guess the rest  :'(

http://knytt.ni2.se/ (http://knytt.ni2.se/)

Knytt is a very atmospheric game, where I think the developers intention was to make a game after he had composed the music, or it was this one:

http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/ (http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/)

More of a game if you will than Knytt, you play a bouncing ball and explore a world, getting new balls with different abilities as you progress. Really great game, with some cool physics. I'm not going to ruin what kind of balls you're going to get though, but it's all quite clever, and it has some Superb level design, without getting complicated.(just smart)

(Both freeware, without ads)

Wow, my first post on this obviously growing forum. :D
I just got hooked on Within A Deep Forest and played it to the end in one sitting. I recommend it.

A game I quite like to play every once in a while: Soldat (www.soldat.pl)

Soldat is a unique side-view multiplayer action game. It takes the best from games like Liero, Worms, Quake and Counter-Strike and gives you fast action gameplay with tons of fun. Soldiers fight against each other on 2D battle arenas using a deadly military arsenal. This is what multiplayer was invented for.

Okay, I've recently become enslaved to this game. You've probably all seen it before, but I thought I'd bring it to attention.

Story:

The eyes of mankind have decided to leave their hosts and take over the earth. Their first move was to escape to the moon, where they developed their hostile weapon technology. Ten years later they return and forcefully take over some prominent countries in Asia. Thailand and New Korea has both succumb to the hostile threat, while China insists on dealing with the eyes themselves and refuses any helping hands from around the world.

America sends a pair of pilot twins with extroardinary sixth senses to battle against the evil eyes. They both have designed their own space ships that seems to be about the only thing in existance that can be used to battle these terrible fiends.

Great! More people need to try out Within a Deep Forest. Have you played his latest game, Knytt? Don't know if you'll like it as it is less about precise platforming than WADF is. It does have some great atmospheric scenes helped by the sporadic music.

It's lovely, best way to describe it I think. I downloaded Knytt at around midnight and finished two hours later, wanting to play it immediately aftwards. At 2:30 I went to bed though, but I think I have finished it about 3 times.

I still have not found all the secrets, only two false walls. I heard there were special upgrades to be found?

I have one item left to find. :'( Its the one in the clouds, I think I have to go the long way 'round...

But man, what a solid, solid game. The controls feel so natural, and the atmosphere is so easy to get absorbed into.

I hear there's secret items, maybe even a secret world?

Did the spiders scare you too? (I ashamed to say, the pink one did)

I think the best parts are when the music kicks in when you've climbed the tower and jump from cloud to cloud, the creepy world with the man coming out of the house and the part with the broken bridge.
I love it when you encounter these characters who do not speak at all. I believe that's the best thing the developer could have done, after all you're from another planet, how are you going to commuicate? Instead they just let you be and mind their own business, adding to the great stranded on a strange planet and just discovering all these wonderful locations feeling. So very nice.

Don't know about a secret world, but there could be hidden unlockables like mini games. Don't know if that is in this game or WADF.

I've been quite hooked on "N" for a while:
You play a ninja trying to make its way through various rooms full of dangerous robots, puzzles, traps, and quite importantly, gold. There is no way to fight the robots, running and evading is your only chance to survive. The goal of each level is to open an exit door by touching an exit door switch, and then make your way through the door. The game is seperated in episodes of 5 levels each, with a starting time of 90 seconds for every episode. Picking up gold gives you extra time, so it's often worth to go for it even if it's dangerous.

There are 100 Episodes in the game (yes, thats 500 levels), so you won't run out of challenges soon. And even if you beat 'em all, there is a huge community map site called Numa (the N user map archive) with tons of new ones...

Good lord! It had to happen some time I guess...
Seriously, N is addictive and insanely frustrating! You can spend hours on an episode just trying to pass one of the levels. And if you have to leave or close your computer before finishing the entire episode (5 levels) then it's back to square [insert number of episodes completed here]. Yet for some reason you will always come back for more.

:) I recomend...If you have no life to attend to  :P

Oh my gawd! i forgot about gish! *bashes head to the wall*

Gish isn't your average hero, in fact he's not your average anything... see Gish is a ball of tar. A Sunday stroll with his lady friend Brea goes awry when a shadowy figure emerges from an open man hole and pulls Brea into the ground below. Following Brea's calls for help Gish suddenly finds himself in the subterranean sewers of Dross, a long forgotten city filled with twisting corridors, evil traps and some of the most demented creatures imaginable.

With his gelatinous structure as his only means of defense Gish must follow the echoing cries of his damsel in distress deep into the earth below. What freakish creatures dwell in this subterranean land? Who is Brea's captor? And just how far down does the rabbit hole go?

Life isn't easy when you're a 12 pound ball of tar...

This is a indie game that hit the jackpot, which is the future i see in aquaria too.

http://www.chroniclogic.com/image/gish/gish-4.jpg
http://www.chroniclogic.com/image/gish/gish-9.jpg

The game simulates fluid physics extraordinarily well. Gish has three "modes" you can activate by holding down a single button.

Sticky: Stick to any non-slippery surface. Scale walls, cross ceilings or if you want, hold on to a bad guys head so he cant hit you.

Slick: Makes you extra liquid-y, enabling you to go through tight spaces and corridors.

Heavy: You guessed it. Mainly used for crushing objects and enemies.

But the brilliance does not end there. You can activate TWO modes at a time, which opens a load of new possibilities.

The atmosphere of the game is pretty morbid and depressing, which i find odd, because the hero is pretty humorous.

Just grab a demo from here: http://www.chroniclogic.com/gish_download.htm

I'll have to chime in and suggest La Mulana, a sprawling sidescrolling adventure, which can be both brutally difficult, yet immensely satisfying.  Tons of puzzles and traps abound, along with all sorts of goodies.  I'd be seriously surprised if anyone actually made it completely through the game without resorting to some sort of guide at least once.

It's rather difficult at the start, but it gets a bit easier when you get some health upgrades and the Grail so you can teleport out in a sticky situation, and teleport back, once you've read certain tablets. (thankfully found in the first 'zone' of the ruins, if you can find it - do so, asap)

The graphics were done completely retro, in the style of an MSX game.  And one of your most important items, is your handy MSX computer.   Now, with your trusty whip, journey into the ruins of La Mulana.

Screenshots, game, and translation patch available here:   http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana (http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana)

Give it a shot - oh, and it's a good idea to read the manual before you play.  It helps.  There's also a clue for one of the puzzles on one of the last pages, although you'd not know it when you originally read the manual.

Oh, and unless you have a *really* good memory or don't mind backtracking looking for clues you forgot, taking notes can be helpful.  Although, sometimes you'll solve a certain puzzle, and you might not need a certain clue because of it.  Getting the horn from outside the ruins will let you know when you've solved a puzzle as well - more helpful than you might think, since a puzzle on one screen might change something multiple screens away.

And, starting advice - first things first, get money to get the Game Master cartridge, to be able to save your game at the village elder, and a hand scanner.   Break pots on the surface to find some money, but the money in those pots doesn't respawn - and it'll take too long to get money from the enemies - it's best to head into the ruins once you've gotten all the money available on the surface.  Money and items in pots inside the ruins will respawn when you load your saved game, and each pot always has the same thing in it, be it money, weights, or weapon ammo.   The Glyph Reader is important to get as well.

And a heads up - there's two puzzles in particular that won't reset when you leave the room, both for whip upgrades.  If you mess it up, you'll never be able to get those weapons.  One is in the lava caverns area, the room on the far left of the map.  The other is in the room with the giant set of scales.  When you come across that room, you may want to teleport back and save first, before attempting it, as the room closes off after you enter the room.  As far as I know of, there's no way to reset either of these two rooms, and the stronger whips are handy to have.  Speaking of handy - remember that the whip strikes above you when you swing it as well.

Ok, Ok, I'll shut up now - the exploration and discovery is half the fun.

I'm gonna be cool and mention Akuji and Guardians of Paradise!!

Both of these are made by the same indie developer/guy: Buster. They're short(ish), old-school and oh-so-freaking cute!!

Guardian of Paradise:

Akuji the Demon/Heartless

Guardians of Paradise is longer than Akuji, but I still prefer Akuji more.

Heh! I also found that game about a week ago. My record was 2000+ points. I was bloody huge  :)

Once I worked out how to partially break the physics, I managed a forty-one kill combo by gliding the entire length of the level, murderalising everything stupid enough to walk on the surface of my desert. It was magic.

The Laxius games are quite good, with a LOT to do. Sure the RPGs are made from a simple program like RPG Maker 2000 and the english isn't very good, but it reminds of the good RPG days that the SNES brought, except you have more to do.

Here's where you can get the current games in the series: http://laxiuspower.org/
The available games are: Laxius Power, Laxius Power II, Laxius Power III, Blades of Heaven, and Lax Team
Laxius Power IV is coming out in early 2008.

One series of games I found was the Marathon Trilogy the website is http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org you may need to do a bit of looking on the website to find a file called alpha one which you need to get to play marathon. Also it was made by Bungie and the reason it free now is because you can't stores anymore.

AlephOne.  AlephOne is the name of the open source version of the Marathon II / Infinity engine that Bungie put out in the late 1990s, shortly before they were bought out by MS.  More recently, Bungie released the data files for the original Marathon games, for use with AlephOne -- before that, you had to buy  the Marathon CDs separately.

For those that care, aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and is also used to represent various infinities.  Roughly speaking, aleph null is the number of items in the set of integers, i.e. aleph null is the ordinality of a countable set.  Aleph one is next largest infinity, if I recall my calculus correctly, and corresponds to the set of real numbers.  Just in case you were wondering.

I've just started getting into Akuji The Demon, and I'm enjoying it immensely! The Japanese text isn't nearly the barrier I feared it'd be (which is just as well, really, because I can't find a translation patch; I've found one downloadable one, and it's a .rup file, which I've never seen in my life and have no idea how to open).

Eheh... Yeah they are just illegal.

I don't think anyone has added Savage to this topic, right?
Savage was originally comercial but it has been released for free by the developers hoping for more popularity for Savage 2. (If you like savage 1 and want to share the indie love you can preorder Savage 2 ;) )

In savage the idea is that two teams fight each other online in a battle to destroy the opposition's main building. The beast team's main building is the lair and the human's main building is the stronghold. Each team has a commander who plays an RTS game, with teching, building and commanding units. Every other person on the team plays a 3rd/1st person hack-and-slash/shooter game. When the commander gives an order you get a waypoint to go towards, which you can obey or disregard. It's up to you.

"Lord Monarch is a game where you try and expand your territory. Winning strategies include analyzing the layout of game maps, the flow of game, waiting for the right time to attack, and withstanding reprisals ... Lord Monarch has all the indispensable elements for a dynamic game. " -developers
was a snes game but it never was sold in america, now it is a freeware game. I wish i had a pic to put up but it has nothing special in graphics. The gameplay and complexity of the strategy is what draws you into it.

ADOM is a Rogue-like game.  It is also one of the most difficult games I have ever played.  A friend and I played it non-stop for about two years and we could never get farther than about level 25 of the main dungeon.  Superb amounts of depth to the game, and it's definitely a game you could play for the rest of your life.

Lurked for quite a while here, but I just had to register so I could rep my favorite roguelikes.

(Linley(Henzell)'s)Dungeon Crawl (http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/) "has superb, deep tactical gameplay, innovative magic and religion systems, and a grand variety of monsters to fight."  The above links to the Stone Soup variant which arose to address the desires of the players when vanilla Crawl development slowed to a halt.  Even more fabulous, a player by the name of Enne Walker coded up a version with graphics (http://enne.walker.googlepages.com/crawl-newmonsters.png/crawl-newmonsters-full.jpg)!

Utilitarian graphics even!  Somebody finally had the bright idea that 32x32 sprite in 256 colors can convey more info than a single character!  Your sprite changes based on items equipped, and a long sword is easily distinguishable from a falchion using *just your eyes*! Imagine!

Or, if you seek a more old-school sensation, you can't go wrong with vanilla Angband (http://rephial.org/).  A new dev took the helm a year or two ago, and it's looking good so far.

You know I'm amazed that Cave Story only got 1 short little post on the first page of this thread.  But I see people raving about this Knytt Stories game.  As far as downloadable games go I don't think Cave Story can be topped.  It's got a good length of about 6 and a half hours, nearly infinite replayability, a terrific storyline, varied environments with great level design, just the right amount of difficulty, brilliant characters and translations, and though it resembles games like Metroid and Megaman (they hold the top spot in side-scrolling action platforming) it differentiates itself just enough to be unique and fun.  NOW SOMEBODY ACKNOWLEDGE THE GREATNESS OF DOUKUTSU MONOGATARI!

Eh, I didn't mean it like that, was more that I wouldn't get a barrage of "That's already on the forum."

But yeah, you are right, Cave Story is so awesome that it should be on every page of this topic. =p

I just beat the prototype of this game! it's simple, fun, addiction! very relaxing. the link is to the one in development called Crayon Physics deluxe but you can find a link to the original Crayon Physics. I recommend it even thought the creator dislikes it :). there are a total of 7 levels in Crayon Physics.

go download now!

Hah, so I downloaded and beat it, very nice game, looks alot like "Phun" though. But meh, physics game will always be awesome.

Makes me wonder if anyone of you tried "Armadillo Run"

I tried Armadillo Run, and while it's very clever it kinda bored me. You'd have to be blind to miss it given the previous link, but nevertheless it's worth mentioning that Crayon Physics Deluxe is coming out sometime soon, and unlike the original prototype it doesn't turn everything into rectangles :P

Actually, somehow I also got it to make some weird round lines or even spheres, it was kind of hard to actually have a square at the one time and a line at the other.

And yeah, Armadillo run is mroe something to look at then to play actually.

I'd like to recommend Gate 88 (http://queasygames.com/gate88/), a fast-paced, frenetic blend of real-time strategy and 2D space shooter...

And Lugaru (http://wolfire.com/lugaru.html), entirely unrelated to furries in any way at all (if you're worried).

Lugaru is great! I got pretty far in it, and forgot about it during a format storm. I'll have to reinstall that one, crazy fierce rabbit action, and mad goosy fun jumping all around the terrain. not a bad story that unfolds throughout the levels too.

An Untitled Story was great.

Here's a few others that I also like.
Soldexus (http://pneophen.piiym-net.com/)
Albero and the Great Blue Emblem (http://www.gamemakergames.com/?a=view&id=3311)
Gregg the Egg (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/launch/1093)

Edit: Had to add Dim (http://www.helixgamesinc.com/). It's been kicking my butt, but I been lovin' it. Oh, and YMM released FlaiL today. (Same link.)

Oh my god. You've completely destroyed my free time!

With all these rogue-likes, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Nethack. In my opinion, it's the best rogue-like!

Why? I don't know, maybe because I haven't tried any other  ;)

Oh yeah, and I suggest setting it on 32x32 tiles, I can't stand the 16x16 ones.

Edit: After posting that, I've been playing it for 5 days straight (ouch)

Hmm... Doom baddies, re-cast into a different game genre...

Kind of reminds me of BOOM!

BOOM (http://www.factor-software.com/boom.php (http://www.factor-software.com)) is essentially Bomberman meets Doom. A very fun yet frustrating game that's harder than it looks, with violently innocent graphics, which is simply great.

Edit: By the way, it's Mac only.

Okay, time for another. This one is for practically every modern computing platform.

Battle for Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org/) is an open source community game closely resembling games like Ogre Battle, Master of Monsters, or even the more popular Final Fantasy Tactics. In any case, whatever game it reminds you of, you kill your opponents through a string of scenarios, retaining your corps from each encounter (a la Myth). It's a fun game with a punishing AI that has decent graphics and is continually getting better.

Oh, and it's free.
Title: Re: Our Favorite Downloadable Games
Post by: iggyzor on May 08, 2008, 10:24:18 pm
I played Wesnoth for a while, it was kinda cool at first but for a game that size it was pretty dull... still, for a downloadable game it lasted a good month or so.

Really liked the mods though, theres so many its mind boggling... Ive tried about every single one. My favorite was Rumble.

The arcade style side scrolling Cloudphobia!  I believe created by a single person, they finally finished it and released it today :)
There's a trial version that has 2 of the 5 levels free to play.  I just bought the full version using the paypal button for about 17$... mmmm it seems like it might be a little short, but it's an awesome rush.

First Iji... then Aquaria gets updated, and now this is released!  It's a good year for 2-d indie developed games :)

How's about an awesome one Derek Yu did? How about...
SPELUNKY!
Kiss your free time goodbye. It's a platformer where you're an explorer who carries a whip, Indiana Jones-style, and uses ropes and bombs to navigate through randomly-generated levels. Combined with the amount of enemies and interesting ways to die, it never gets boring.

What I love most about this game are all the hidden features you learn about as you play the game that give it a lot of depth. All kinds of items can be found or purchased in the game that can be useful, such as climbing gloves, a compass, or a shotgun. There's a damsel that you can rescue, and she'll heal you one health point at the end if you do, but you can also leave her to rot, kill her, or sacrifice her on an altar in exchange for useful items. There are idols that you can try to steal, but beware the booby traps! There are shopkeepers that you can buy from, but you can also steal from or kill if you want to (but beware the consequences!). There are also hidden areas, but I think I've spoiled enough already. Just try it!

Hi,
On GameHouse, you can find the hottest game releases and all of your favorite downloadable games and online games, for both Windows and Mac, from the top game publishers. So explore the site. You'll find games in all of your favorite categories including hidden object, puzzle, classic games and more.

FYI, don't go to GameHouse, it only has those horrible half hour trial games that are all alike and you have to pay if you want to play it, which... really isn't worth the money.

Hi,
On GameHouse, you can find old ideas in low-quality versions and all the downloadable and online games you really don't want, for Windows, Mac, and any other operating system vulnerable to spyware, from the worst-paid game publishers. So explore the site (if you dare). You'll find games in a few categories that everybody hates including hidden object, puzzle, old games and... wait that's it.

Edited for truth. Unleash the captchas! BTW, this really isn't on topic, but Steam's having a great sale on an indie games pack (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/03/03/midweek-indie-games-purchasitudeosity/) (Altitude, Bob Came in Pieces, and Galcon stand out) for the low, low price of 9.99!  ;)

Finished Aquaria last night... what a spectacular game! Hungry for more, and I'll try the sacrifice mod next!

I kept thinking of another free indie game as I played: Cave Story. Like Aquaria or Metroid it is "one huge level", and features outstanding art and music direction (though in a very different style). Cave Story was made by one dedicated/brilliant artist, so there's another similarity with Aquaria. Check it out here: http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

How about you? Do any other great but unknown games come to mind when you play Aquaria?

This was my first FPS ever. I actually got pretty good at it, and I think it's still fun nowadays. However, the community has mostly fallen out and any servers will now need you to download ten dozen PK3 files. Its gameplay was semi-revived but failed in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

OpenTTD (http://www.openttd.org/en/)

It's less "casual" than most of the other games that have been listed here, but it's freely downloadable (http://www.openttd.org/en/download-stable) to so it fits the thread description... :)

OpenTTD a free, open-source, improved reimplementation of the old "Transport Tycoon Deluxe (TTD)" game, for Windows/Mac/Linux.
Unfortunately it has a pretty steep learning curve (you will need to read tutorials on the wiki (http://wiki.openttd.org) if you're completely new), but once you get to know it it becomes a perfectly good way to waste large amounts of time...  ;D

You have to build transport networks (railroad, buses/trucks, airplanes, ships) to transport passengers and cargo between towns and industries - and, of course, make a profit and outperform your (human or AI) competitors.

You can build simple train routes: (http://i.imgur.com/rTLPEfAs.png) (http://i.imgur.com/rTLPEfA.png) ...or make it more complex to optimize efficiency: (http://i.imgur.com/jQnJHRBs.png) (http://i.imgur.com/jQnJHRB.png) ...or go completely nuts: (http://i.imgur.com/UFoB0EHs.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/UFoB0EH.jpg) (click for full size)

Yet another one for nostalgic gamers: OpenLieroX (http://www.openlierox.net)

Probably everyone knows Worms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worms_%28game%29) (released in 1995 for DOS).
Some might remember that there was a real-time Worms clone, called Liero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liero) (released in 1998 for DOS).

Well there's a cross-platform (Win/Mac/Linux) sequel, called OpenLieroX (before it became an open-source project it was called "Liero Xtreme").
It's basically like Liero - only bigger, better, and much much crazier...  >:D (oh, and it has online multi-player)

* The second game which comes to mind is Eternal Daughter. Yeah, you should know it if you're in these forums.

Eternal Daughter is one my favorite game , I recommend it to all .
