Title: Metroid Prime 2D
Post by: Alec on February 02, 2007, 03:21:52 am
I found this project (http://www.mp2d.co.uk/) interesting, since I just started replaying Metroid Prime. I was really enjoying it the second time through, and I was curious how a 2D version would stack up.

Its pretty fun to recognize the areas in the game from a different perspective/interpretation. The whole "scanning" element of the game is a pain though. It was required in the 3D version to make it easy to interact with things, but in 2D it seems unnecessary when all you want to do is flip a switch.

It got me thinking about how some 3D games have all these extra features to make them work... auto-targeting, camera correction, auto jumping. (as in the 3D Zelda games) The advantage of Metroid Prime being 3D is that you can get lost in the world and feel like you're really there, running around in a robot suit; but the core game play isn't as "pure" as the 2D Metroids.

Thoughts? :)

But... But... The graphics... They're like half way between Metroid Prime and Super Metroid and and... It's not beautiful!

I consider it blasphemy.

I have a significant attachment to that 2d look. I prefer it much more than the current 3d change of today.

Interesting idea, although the graphics could definitely be improved.  I agree, it's a mishmash right now.

That game is ugly, which is a pity as in principle it sounds bonzer. I wish that the DS Metroid was 2D.  :'(

Interestingly enough, I was more wondering what people thought about the differences in game design between 2D and 3D, as made clearer by translating one to the other.

Hmm, I think that Metroid translated the gameplay to 3D better than most games but it seems that due to the limited number of digits we have there's always some aspect of 2D gameplay which suffers in translation to 3D.

Arguably in Metroid's case it was the shooting which suffered, being clunky and having to rely on the lock-on, but the platforming in it worked very well and certainly in terms of map design and a sense of exploration I think that it worked better than the last two 2D Metroids, Fusion felt incredibly constrained and Zero Mission led you by the hand too much.

I think the fault with this particular version is that the player is simply too big for the screen, making a very short-range game which Metroid Prime certainly wasn't. The same thing plagued that attempt to do Halo in 2D, although that was stymied by repetitive and boring gameplay as well.

I'd more or less agree with Dr D.  I'm a huge, huge sucker for the old Metroid games, but I had a heck of a lot more fun with MP and MP2 than I expected to.  MP2 is actually one of my favorite Metroids at this point.

Anyone else play Metroid II for the Gameboy?  It was awesome.  Better graphics than the original, better gameplay, and the first portable version of Samus.  I still have the thing (somewhere  :P) and play it often.

I HAD it, but some guy took it and destroyed it. I found pieces on the school lawn after and I was mad.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I agree with that! ;)

But I can't remember enough of how Metroid II played to provide a suitable argument. :'(

(Btw, I accidentally modified your message instead of quoting it at first, hence the timestamp!)

HAX!!! lol, no worries.

I'm kind of an oddball when it comes to Metroid.  I actually couldn't get in to Super Metroid, so my opinion on Metroid is kinda skewed... :P :P

Heh, on my forums I do that too often.  Stupid buttons.

As for Metroid II, I couldn't get into it as much.  Not sure why.  I do own it, and there's nothing wrong with it, I just liked the original better.  And Super Metroid is hard to beat in any capacity.  That game is just amazingly fun.

Can I have your copy of Metroid II? I want to replace mine, but I can't find any copy.

Oh, I JUST REALIZED I KNOW THE GUY WHO MADE THE SPACE PIRATE SPRITES FOR THAT!
