Title: Steam achievement bugs
Post by: Ginhyun on January 05, 2009, 09:44:43 am
Hi! First post on these forums. I'd first like to say that I love Aquaria. It's certainly the best indie game I've ever played and one of the better games I've played recently.

Anyway, I've noticed some bugs with the achievements that I figured I'd post here so that they can get ironed out.

- Defeating the Rock Crab actually gets you two achievements: Rock Crab Rocked and Boom Shrimp. I think this happens regardless of whether or not you have defeated the Mantis Shrimp

-Occasionally you'll get an achievement you've already earned for no apparent reason. This sometimes happens upon exiting the game. I got Combo Eater three times or so.

-Not related to achievements, but there was a bug with the hint system for the map. After a certain late-game event before entering The Body, I went past the sunken submarine thing in The Veil, and it hinted that I should go to The Veil (only one screen over) with blue sparkles. But there was nothing for me to do there, and the sparkles later disappeared.

I could've sworn there was one more achievement bug, but I can't think of it at the moment.

Answering your first point: this bug was found a few days ago - Alec's implementing a fix for it in the next patch (v. 1.1.3 now I think).

Answering your second point: Not sure if Alec knows about this one.

Answering your third point: you haven't explored enough of the second Veil area - go back and check your map for straight lines and tunnels (those usually lead to a temple, and places of worship are places to be in Aquaria (Energy Temple, Mithalas Cathedral, etc.). Just go back and swim into all the nooks and crannies in the map (esp. to the northwest).

Hope that helps! Enjoy the rest of the game, and welcome (http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=18.0) to the forums.

Sorry, I probably should have clarified a bit. It wasn't directing me toward The Sun Temple, as I'd already beaten that. I was only missing Spirit Form at this point, if I remember correctly.

SPOILERS (just in case)

From where the sparkles were, it seemed to be directing me to Li again. Except he wasn't there because I'd already gotten him and then lost him in The Sunken City.

END OF SPOILERS

Okay - that suggests that the sparkle does not stop after you've accomplished the goal; BTW did you get the two treasures in the Sun Temple yet?

[EDIT] Now I realize that you couldn't have made it to the Body without either balls of oak and iron (possible, but unlikely) or the Sun Form.  ;)

Ah, I was wrong about the sparkles disappearing. They're still there. I think I only got one of the Sun Temple treasures (the gear), so if the sparkles also function as a treasure detector thing, I'll feel quite silly.

I'll try looking around for the other treasure and seeing if they go away.

Alright - keep me posted! I'd like to know. Thanks!  :) Hope you enjoy the Gauntlet (the final section of the body before the final boss).  ;)

Actually, I've already beaten the game. Just need to get the rest of the achievements and all the treasures (I'm kind of wondering what area I could have possibly missed to not have Explorer yet, though [EDIT: Turns out it was the area with the developer fish]). Of course, I'll probably end up replaying he game soon since it's so good.

Anyway, I found the Sun Key, so assuming there's only two treasures in the temple, I found them both. And I also found the memory when I went through the temple the first time, so there's no chance of that being it. The sparkles still remain, though.

Just out of curiosity, is there a screenshot button or do screenshots have to be done via print screen and pasting? There's a screenshot folder, so I figured print screen would automatically dump screenshots there, but I had no such luck.

Yes there are 2 treasures there so keep looking especially at the walls in the minimap :D
And about the sparkles, perhaps you get them if Li isn't with you when you go back up to the veil without him, so try Naija's home or the cave and click on his helmet, then if it stops you will know why :) And if it doesn't stop than you will know that you do have a big that needs reporting.

Though if you have finished the game except for the final boss and all his forms, then by rights Li should be with her?

I got "Uniter" after rescuing only 3 spirits.

Gosh darnit.

A'ight, I'll get on this soon.

I'm really having trouble getting the Explorer achievement, see the thread here (http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=1540.0). I'm beginning to think it's a bug in the game. I'm pretty sure I've got every area, including the developer fish area (good one!), since I already have every other achievement and all treasures.

How is the tracking of visited areas done? Is it stored in the savegame, so that a single savegame has to have all the areas marked as visited for the achievement to be unlocked? Or could I (theoretically) start a new savegame, swim straight to the area I missed and get the achievement?

Also, does the last boss area (fourth form) and the evil mother ending area count toward this achievement?

On the subject of achivement bugs I get a LOT of printouts in my debug log for achievement status; I don't think it's having an effect on performance as such, but it is frustrating when trying to check things in the log when working on mods.

This is an interesting topic.

I myself got Rock Crab and Boom Shrimp at the same time after beating the crab.
Uniter popped up when I had 3/4 of the spirits rescued.
Feather Mouth never popped up for me at all (though my Steam achievements acknowledge me as having achieved it).

Necrobump. Rock Crab still triggers both its own and the Boom Shrimp achievements on Steam.

This shall be my first post necro.

I can't believe Boom Shrimp and Rock Crab haven't been fixed yet, why hasn't an update been released?
I'm also getting the same problem as MiSP. I have all the achievements except for Super Chef and Explorer. I finished the game, got to the real ending and all that jazz. Still no achievement. I might have skipped something, but I searched the map and nothing appears to be missing.
The following is unrelated to Steam, but there's an apostrophe missing in the secret ending ("It's what you do, my dear.").

Maybe that's what's known as an "upside down" afro. :)

Actually, russian retail is a fairly profitable venture, we Яussiдns do like our retro themed games :) Are you going to translate the voice acting also?

SENSE.
you make none.

Aquaria has nothing to do with "retro themed" games or whatever you meant.

I think by "Retro Themed" he means 2D.

But Pirates Ahoy? Yeah... no sense.

By retro I actually meant non-commercial 2d. So excuse me for not using the right term  ::)

When I said pirates ahoy, I was referring to the notorious piracy rate in Russia

I'm gonna go ahead and necro this to add a confirmation for the shrimp-and-crab bug, the three-spirit Uniter bug, and the I-got-every-single-treasure-lost-memory-and-achievement-other-than-Explorer bug.

I also had two crashes more than I did playing the non-steam version (in other words, two crashes), but half of them were because I was alt-tabbing and the other half couldn't be replicated, so meh.

Other than that, no bugs detected, and I'd like to add a +brofist for having only five of the 27 achievements be impossible not to earn.

I got all achievements two days ago in a 9 hour run, I'm not sure what you did wrong.

I also got the Boom Shrimp after defeating the crab, I'm presuming this is a simple .lua script with a mistake in it.
Also I'm not sure what went wrong with the explorer bug, because again, I got all achievements. Not sure what you might've skipped, do you have all pets as well? What about the easter egg, maybe you went in there, got the achievement, died, then it missed the area?

I found two crashes myself, which is;
Opening the minimap with q button while changing map.
Then cooking something, pressing q to open recipes list and then pressing escape to close the window, all within a second.
Both were able to replicate.

Alphasoldier, I have all the everything that I know of in the game, including pets, "I found the whole thing rather silly," and map markers. Only places I died or otherwise had to reload my save file after entering another map were a few boss fights and the Frozen Veil, before I entered Bubble Cave, which I did again immediately thereafter.

The only thing I can think of that could affect my progress is the fact that I haven't used every single possible connection between maps (for example, I haven't used the connection between the western Abyss map and its connected Open Waters map, but I have visited both of those maps through different r0utes) but I don't think that's what the requirement is. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

So after having found ACH_EXPLORER in the debug.log file after a simple windows search I tried searching this string manually in the .lua files presuming that windows doesn't look through those. I found nothing.
So I went back to the debug.log to study it closer. I found 48K lines saying I already have the achievements right after it tries to load map_title.lua from the same folder where all the other map files are, meaning that this file is hidden in the main executable.
Conclusion being, I couldn't try figuring out what the requirements are if I wanted to.

The only thing I could offer is giving you my save game and that it'll give you the achievement.

That's a shame. I'm having this issue too and let me say it's killing me in term of my obsessiveness. >_<

I have every achievement, pet, location and treasure. I also have a ton of save files having meticulously saved right before every boss fight on the off chance that I want to fight them again later and saves for both endings.

One thing worth mention though is that the game cache was somehow invalid on my end (it failed to verify but I never actually had a problem playing the game with it all the same). I'm wondering if banjo2E might have the same issue and that this issue bungled our ability to get this achievement in our saves.

Well, as I said, I could upload my save game file, so... I did.
In fact I added 2 bonuses; A completely full inventory with maxed out ingredients/recipes. Everything is 8/8.
And I made it so that you're playing with the End costume, the one you temporarily wear at the end, but never keep.

The game is completely 100% completed. It's the save file I got all achievements with, so I'm fairly sure you'll get all achievements when loading up this baby. Only thing that isn't 100% is the white/explored portion of the map.

Alphasoldier's save is no longer available, but I'll offer my 100% completion save file (https://app.box.com/s/mj8f4sqvowophp3r05yfr2o0y4ox5lut) as a replacement. I don't have maxed items but I have every achievement. Hope this helps.

This thread (http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=1540.msg35852#msg35852) also has a checklist of stuff anyone having trouble with the Explorer achievement should take a look at.
