Title: Monkey Flinger
Post by: Citizen Kane on January 03, 2009, 04:10:12 pm
[EDIT] god damn. should have tried nature form. don't mind this thread. lock please. worst first post ever.  >< [/EDIT]

I have already beaten the game, and decided to replay it now that its on steam.

one quick question...how do I go about 'flinging' a monkey? I swear i have spent like an hour now messing with those f*ckers. Granted i haven't slept in 2 days, i may be missing something. either way, Google has failed to help, so i figured someone here might know? I hope asking for help isn't considered cheating in terms of achievements...

PS: this game is wicked radical

Why do you want to fling a monkey? Unless you get some kind of thrill from it? lol No matter don't worry there have been far worse first posts I'm sure Kane :D

I have managed all but three of those tasks, for some reason I never tried to eat a parrot or fling a monkey, though I knocked a few of their trees and drowned them :'(
And I haven't got below a minute in the race, yet! Perhaps I never will but I'm not on Steam so who cares lol

Yeah, I really don't care about the achievements. I'm not using the steam version anyways, but even if I were.. I don't know if I'd bother with some of those.

to be honest, most of them you will get anyway, by completing the game 100%.
I mean, I always beat all mini bosses, etc.

There are only two i probably won't get, beating the race in under a minute, and finding all recipies.

I only had to go out of my way for three of them:
-riding ekkrit for a minute (only took a minute of my time lol)
-flinging a monkey (took 1 second after i figured it out)
-and eating a parrot (i did this by accident)

I suppose high dive, belly of the whale, and the derek/alec fish are a little out of the way if you don't know about them already.

In my opinion this is what achievements should be though. None are TOO hard. We're not getting any of the "beat the final boss without taking damage" achievements. Or how about "pull up every plant". Those would be just obnoxious. Achievements that are too hard leave people frustrated. Reasonable achievements however give the players something else to work towards. Little side-goals, if you will, beyond the most pressing goal of actually beating the game. They can also be a great way of marking progress. I would love to beat aquaria 100% , but i know that I won't have done so until I get all the achievements. They can even add replayability to a game.

Also, not that you should buy the game again on steam if you already own it, but Steam is a great tool for gamers. The integration of the community, combined with the portability of your games is unparalleled. If you arn't even on steam at all, its at least worth checking out - if only to buy a quake for $0.99.

ooo really like all the little pieces of art for those too! were those made especially for this? I don't know what the 'romance' is, where the high jump would be, I've killed a parrot but not sure if I devoured one, not sure if I flung a monkey, and wouldn't have gotten the recipie one the first time around. otherwise like you said, most of those you sort of just get by playing the game thorough  :)

I guess the 'Romance bit' is just Naija finding Li,  Inky lol ;D And my favourite little artwork is the Beast one lol

Why do I always read "Monkey Finger" as topic name?
Never tried the flinging, will do next time I'm there! ;)

You are not on your own Xiagan, I have to double check it's spelling nearly every time I see it lol

It must be a natural thing for the brain to do by letter association, because it just did that to me as well. Very odd double take.

I read it as Flinger with a hard j sound for g, then had a double take, read it as Finger, shook the mildew out of my head, and finally read it as it was meant to be read.  ::)  ;)

It must be a natural thing for the brain to do by letter association, because it just did that to me as well. Very odd double take.

The reason is efficiency and it's the same reason we can read faster than, for example, a child learning to read phonetically, sound by sound. We don't read letter by letter but instead by a first-glance impression based on the first and last few letters of a word as well as expectancies about context (both of the sentence and the greater context) and word frequency. If any confusion or uncertainty arises, a second more elaborate process is prompted, hence your double-take.
'Monkey Finger' probably makes more semantic sense than 'Monkey Flinger' and would likely be a more frequently used phrase, so the brain took the first letter and last few letters and decided on finger. Don't worry, it just means your brain is saving energy :)

In case you haven't seen the famous example of this phenomenon in action.....

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Haha! I had that exact example in mind while reading the first few lines of your post, then realized you had already done it.  :) It was truly unnerving reading that for the first time: made me appreciate how much of the world we see is fabricated by the mind.  :)
