So I finally finished the game (and my arm is about to fall off from cramping), but there's one thing I keep on trying to do that I can't seem to manage. See subject line. So I'm wondering, is there anyone who's managed to get through that area without dying, and is there anything interesting at the end?

The Nightmare? It is beatable, though it requires lots of practice. Extensive use of the Look function to snipe from long range helps too. There's nothing interesting at the end, just a doorway out that triggers the same vision you get if you die in it. You get to see a bunch of enemies that you wouldn't get to see until much later, but that's about it.

Exactly. Just did it. ;) (I already knew that there is no reward.)

The Nightmare scared me witless when it first happened - I was wondering if I had broken the game somehow and entered a final level. :) The Gauntlet at the end is about 30 of those sections tied together. :o ;) Your arm will go flying out the window. ;D
-
This would be a great place for a steam achievement!
Maybe we'll add some new ones later.
-
If you implement a Steam achievement on that little level include three:
1. Get through the level without dying
2. Kill all the enemies
3. A definite hard-core achievement - get through the level without losing any health (+ possibly killing all the enemies as well) :)

I actually found the Gauntlet pretty easy. Jellyfish costume and dual form beat it without much trouble. The real reason my arm is about to file a restraining order is that I may have, entirely against my will you understand, been playing games for 12+ hours a day for the past week.

Eep. If it becomes an Achievement, I'll be obligated to work at it until I successfully complete the section. By which time humanity will have died out and a new race of fish people will have evolved.

you can just rush through it
takes only a few seconds to get to the exit

There should be a treasure at the end. Like the shell of a nautilus. lol.
The gauntlet at the end sucks, but if you take it slowly and snipe, it is fairly easy.
-
Too bad you wouldn't get more out of it than just an achievement. It's like that feeling when you beat the simon says boss multiple times and never get anything from it after the first.... could be some really cool easter eggs for future versions? *shrug*
-
I don't know enemy names, so please forgive my ignorance. What/where is this nightmare that you speak of? O_O
-
In the very beginning of the game when you first encounter the shadow. You are teleported to a place (which is the nightmare spoken of)...
-
I remember being really disappointed with that. You start the game defenseless, just swimming around, then you get a dream level where you are suddenly badass. Able to rapid fire homing energy bolts. When I first came to that I though "cool, this must be a preview of near the end of the game. Very cool to get a small taste early on". Then the FIRST form I get is that energy form. Every form after that is weak by comparison. I think it would have been a better progression to get some of the weaker forms first, then energy later.
I dunno, maybe they did it on purpose since every game ever does it the other way around. But I ended up consciously not spamming energy form everywhere because it made things too easy.
-
If Energy form is your strongest, you just don't know how to use the other ones. ;)
-
I (somehow) managed to "beat" the nightmare on my first play through. Can't remember if I killed everything or not.
Basically just keep moving, launch yourself off walls for extra speed, spam that fire key like mad and use the charged volley in open spaces. (Also, if you don't already know, there is a way to fire up to six charged energy bolts at a time.) Oh, and one more thing: you can stick to the big slow critters that fire the beams.
Then the FIRST form I get is that energy form. Every form after that is weak by comparison.
Heh. I recommend experimenting with beast form... cough-eatamoneyenest-cough.
(Also, I assume you aren't counting dual form?)
-
Beast form with pistol shrimp shots is a very formidable weapon - the only disadvantage is how much effort goes into eating the creature. The following is a quote from Glamador on the Dual Form:
It's not particularly useful against basic enemies of aquaria. But in the body, and against mini-bosses, and really anything with above average health, the Dual Form really shines. Li's shot is SUPER powerful and even against mini-bosses the scream HURTS. That's what's so great about it. It's pure power. Of course you shouldn't use it against FISH but against the super-nautilus's in the body? There's nothing better.

Is that the only way to get to this cave DM?
-
yes
-
I beat the nightmare section as well after several tries, it actually got easier with practice a lot faster than I had expected. It would be really nice if there was a little something at the end to reward your perseverance (a snippet of text above the exit for example).
-
yes
I see, well the first time I beat it the second time I just died :-\

Actually if you really wanted its bound to be one of the maps somewhere in the Native Aquaria mod. ;) Although it'd be hard to use in its current form. (You have to know how to use the editor).

I've had a go with the editor, who hasn't I wonder? But my attempts just didn't work out very well? :-\
