Title: New version this weekend! :D
Post by: Xiagan on December 11, 2008, 11:47:32 pm
In case you aren't checking the front page... ;)

Quote from: Alec
Hi folks, Alec here - as of December 7, Aquaria has been released for a year. We want to thank all the people who chose to buy the game and support us. You’re the reason we’re still around, and we really appreciate it. You’re also the reason why we’ve been able to continue to work on improving the game, and soon you’ll be able to experience the result of those efforts.

This weekend we’ll release the new Windows version of Aquaria, 1.1.1. This version includes widescreen, graphics and audio enhancements, improved puzzles, a new/awesome map system and more. It even improves on the recently released Mac version - and it will be released at a new price.

And last but not least, we’ve made a new trailer to celebrate. This one was made in 1280×720, and looks absolutely gorgeous. The files involved in making it are taking up about 82GB of my hard drive! You can check out the embedded video here at standard def, but head to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBHemKy81Ms) or Vimeo for the option to watch it in HD. If you want the original source AVI file, just send me an email and I’ll hook you up.

Alec:
Hey guys, Alec here! Just a note that this version currently isn't available as a patch, its available as a full installer. There are a few good reasons for this. Please check this thread for more info: http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=1426.0
Thanks!

Yeah, I saw that: a definite improvement over the original trailer (and in widescreen  :D ) Only two days, but I find myself incessantly refreshing the Bit-Blot main page.  ::) Thanks for the fast (and good) work!

Everyone give Alec an e-hug for this! He's been working ridiculous hours for the past few weeks to get the trailer and patch ready to go in time for Christmas, alongside his day job at Infinite Ammo.
He needs your hugs to fuel him :)

I've been beta testing the Windows patch and can tell you that it's definitely worth the wait. Alec's done some awesome work on it, and it has some new graphics from Derek, too. *joins the group e-hug*

YIPEE! Let's all hope that Alec shifts into another time zone and sends all the replies back at once.  :o  ;D Thanks so much you guys! I can finally play Aquaria again. (I've been waiting until the patch returned.)

When you bought the game (I suppose you did?), you got something like that:

Registration Name: Xiagan
Registration Key: 0330KA-4X17P4-YQ44IT-YOUR2B-OWL294

That's your purchase information. :)
Title: Re: New patch this weekend! :D
Post by: Chibi on December 13, 2008, 01:44:44 am
When you bought the game, you didn't download the game immediately. Instead, you were emailed the purchase code (an alphanumeric code) to enter in the appropriate place on the Bit-Blot page (link in email). If you didn't keep the purchase code, you might be in trouble, but Alec's usually good about these things (so an email address might be enough). Good luck acquiring the patch!

[EDIT]: Jeez Xiagan! You posted while I was typing. XD

that really dosn't seem like something that should be posted publically  ::), even if it can't be used to register the program it would give a cracker in the know a clue on what sort of security is being used? I'm not versed in such things so if I'm offbase then disregard my fretting.

I doubt that Xiagan is that naive; besides, there were two words inside the code (your and owl). It's probably just a fabrication.

I got my Aquaria v1.1.1 :) Loving the widescreen support! :) Looks spectacular. Had to go through a few minor changes throughout my mod to support the darkness layers though : / Still sad to see nothing new for the mod tools. : / I suppose that leaves plenty of room for future updates though if Alec is still planning on supporting this wonderful gem of a game!

Well, of course the key is not a real one and since the game already is cracked, I don't think much harm comes out of it...

Chibi: It depends on Plimus liking you or not. ;) I know that Alec forwarded them my information about 10 hours ago and still no mail from them. It's wonderful to be as patient as I am. ;)

I'm guessing Plimus is backed up with download requests. :P That's frustrating!

I'll see if I can work out something else in the meantime...

Bah... the map still doesn't work in mods... : /

Sorry man, with all the other changes the mods didn't hit the the priority list. But I might be able to implement some simple changes in the next while... would you have time to test them?

'Cause that's one of the big problems. I can implement stuff, but if I don't have testers I can't really make changes - they need to be thoroughly verified. (so that we don't break old mods, etc)

Will the downloadable demo be upgraded to 1.1 too at some time? Lack of widescreen support made me decide against buying the full version of the game half a year ago. I might change my mind if I get a chance to see the new features/improvements.

HAHA! It's downloading! YES! *grins in ecstasy of anticipation*  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

[EDIT] Oh no! I just found a bug.  :( Whenever I try and use the middle mouse button, Aquaria crashes and says "Action Input look not found" or something along those lines.  :'(

[EDIT] Just found something that made up for all that: a file with all the artwork from Aquaria! Thanks guys! I can finally see "the coward" (the fast guy from the kelp forest).  :)

[EDIT]: Hit the motherload! (Found Naija's pictures)  :)

[EDIT]: Found a secret treasure - the tortoiseshell, a beautiful turquoise shell inlaid with diamonds...Why didn't you include that one, guys? It looks stunning. Also a baby crib.

[EDIT]: Oh my god.  :o Just found the best of all - another Creator form.  8) It's a multi-segmented worm with helmeted heads for rings (segments) and a really creepy fish head.

Chibi: could you change

<Action name="Look" input="MOUSE_BUTTON_MIDDLE KEY_E 0 0 " />

to

<Action name="Look" input="0 MOUSE_BUTTON_MIDDLE KEY_E 0 0 " />

and see if that stops the crash?

Thanks!

I tried to do it, but Explorer said I couldn't. "Make sure the path and file name are correct." Looks like it doesn't like the change for some reason. Thanks for the quick reply!  :)
I don't know whether or not it would stop the crash because of the file problem.

Hmmm

What if you try installing Aquaria to another directory... not in program files.

I think I might have run into something like this with my copy of Vista, but I don't know wtf its about.

(something like usersettings.xml reverts to some old version .... i don't know WHY)

Install a new copy to a different directory, not in program files...

if it works, it'll be very confusing.

Hmmm what might be happening....

the save files in Vista automatically get moved somewhere (Vista does it)

Maybe it moved your usersettings.xml when you installed the last version of aquaria

so now its using an outdated version?

To find the save files on your computer you should just be able to search for "*.aqs*" and/or "*.zga"

(aqs's are the save files, zga's are the save screenshots)
Title: Re: New patch this weekend! :D
Post by: Chibi on December 13, 2008, 10:07:32 pm
I searched for aqs and zga but only found two shortcuts to files. Vista's virtual files system is really annoying. Don't reply yet; I'll try to do the rest on my own. Thanks again!

Okay, (mostly) solved the problem: I have all the save files from my old computer, but the save files generated on this computer are still missing. I'll tell you where they are once I hunt them down (my idea is the temporary files folder). I'll keep you posted. I hope this thread helps anyone with the same problem.

[EDIT] Aquaria is BEAUTIFUL in full widescreen. My only quibbles: loss of the esc cheat, not being able to change direction and move while spinning but the improvements FAR outweigh the quibbles. You have an inspiring work ethic ... which reminds me, I should be doing homework now.  ;D

By the way, I just found out what was causing the middle-mouse button problem  (not the directory) >:D It was my hide-windows program (great for all one's clandestine procrastinating needs) that was causing the problem. Reinstalling it helped, but only because it helps anything.

1.1...1?! What's different from OSX 1.1.0? i.e. what do I have to be jealous about now? =(

Also: dang man, I totally volunteer for patch testing, especially if it'll get us the map system for mods.

Oh man - 1.1.1 was the only release, there is no 1.1.0. If yours says 1.1.0...  :o  :)

Hey Chibi,

I've got a potential patch for fixing the Vista usersettings problem automagically. Let me know when you have time to test it! Thanks. :)

Yeah, this may have already been asked, but what is in this new patch that wasn't in the original Mac version?

Nothing. Windows 1.1 equals the Mac release.

Actually, this is version 1.1.1 which isn't the Mac version (1.1.0)

A number of minor things were fixed, like save screenshots not working on all video cards and some minor input bugs. There's also one map that was changed to make a puzzle more obvious. Probably some more changes too, but I can't recall them right now. :)

I just noticed the 1.1.1 :)

btw: Aquaria 1.1.1 runs smooth and flawless and incredibly awesome on Ubuntu Hardy with Wine. :)

Hey Alec, I'm ready to test it, but expect a wait of about two days, because I'm leaving for a snowboarding trip soon. Could you make sure that the file hosting site is free? Thanks for the quick work.  :)

Do you think the patch is major enough to be worth getting when/if it comes out for mac?

Yes.

Do you mean 1.1.1? If so, yes. If you mean the patch for the file bug, then no, because it is only present in Vista.

[EDIT] By the way, I noticed some strange flashing particles on the main map - do they serve any function besides leading the player back to the center of the map? The dots are a little distracting.

where is this 'patch' then?

i see no patch download. all i see is the developer first stating to email plimus or himself with order reference details to get the, i imagine, full game download of the new version, and then finally fobbing it off completely to plimus to get the new game - who are slow as a funeral.

ive emailed both (zaphire@gmail.com and support@plimus.com) and received nothing back after just under 3 days.

so where is this patch i can download for the game instead of, again i imagine, just having to download the entire game again?

if there is no patch... why not? why force people to download the entire game again??

I've already answered about 400 reactivation requests, I'm running two companies and I'm trying to fix bugs. I'm nearly burnt out, man. I have about 30 activations that I haven't got to, I've been delaying them because I'm about to release 1.1.2 which fixes a couple things.

If Plimus can handle stuff for me, that makes my life a lot easier.

The new version of the game is now DRM-free, so I can't just release it without verifying that a customer has a valid order.

this thread is misleading as i said in the other topic. it shouldnt been allowed to continue existing because it gives the impression there is a patch to download.... how on earth the topic creator could mistake a full game download for a patch is beyond my comprehension??

Folks simply assumed there would be a patch and were excited about the new version. They weren't posting to intentionally mislead anyone.

I'll edit the first post to make it clear how the download process currently works.

Because he (I) didn't know that there will be a new version. Nobody outside the beta-testers, bitblot or plimus knew.

And you are being more rude than we normally experience it around here, no matter what you state about you being a customer with valid concerns in the other topic.  ::)

Maybe you could try adjusting your perception and try to be more compassionate, yumyum. I mean if you want to get down to the inhuman, unemotional nuts and bolts, you have already received the product you paid for. I know you would rather ignore the human and emotional side of life, but doing so really makes you come across as irrational. Logic alone is not enough to get you through life.

Some deep thoughts from someone who used to be like yumyum.  edit:  (or, I should say, used to let logic rule and throw out those quirky emotional bits ;p)

hey, short of ass kissing and saying im sorry theres not much i can do.
by whining it appears i have uncovered a fundamental problem with the plimus system. which benefits some people im sure.

whether the method i went about it was seen as terse, direct or rude is really a matter of perception.
i wanted my questions answered - just as i would ask a mechanic to fix my car and not be interested in his small talk, idle banter or trying to fob me off with excuses - i got my questions answered.

I don't want to argue any further but I don't like the proverb you are refering to. (The end justifies the means.)

The difference to the mechanic is quite simple: You paid him to fix your car. You don't expect the guy you bought your car from to fix/upgrade it for free if there is a new engine/smooth lacquer in your favorite colour on the market for it.
From Alec you expect to do exactly that. That's okay, because Alec likes to help people, but you may at least be polite, because you haven't bought lifetime support for your $16/$20/$30.

i knew the analogy would get picked apart. poor analogy, i shouldnt have used it because software is very different. but its all that came to mind whilst i was feeding the kids.

actually i think i have paid for lifetime support, unless you can point out where im not entitled to any new updates that get released within the natural lifetime of the software in question?

i too am not going to argue further though. its ultimately pointless as the problem has been identified/rectified and that specific question answered.

hey, short of ass kissing and saying im sorry theres not much i can do.

Simple respect actually goes a long way. Instead of seeing the game as little more than a product that you have paid for and now own, and by extension seeing Bit-Blot's customer support team (i.e. Alec, one man) as a service at your disposal because of the money you paid, you could treat the game as a creation and its creators as human, neither of which could realistically be perfect.  The fact that your relationship to Alec is one of a buyer to a seller does not mean that you have to remove human considerations, like mutual respect and patience and empathy, from your conversation. Alec responds to customer concerns in an extremely timely and determined manner because he cares, not because he is a machine programmed to fulfill your needs and bow to your whining...  maybe you know how to "get things done", but the world would truly be a sad place if that were the extent of all person-to-person interactions.

A'ight, let's cool it everyone. I don't think there's any issues here, really.  O0

Wow, that was certainly an entertaining read. I have to say.. even with the moving on coment from Alec, that I feel bad for you in this one instance because you definitely didn't get the credit you deserved. But we're not all like that so I hope it hasn't changed your perception of your "customers" as yumyum would have put it. For a lot of us here, we are more fans and supporters of your projects Alec. Keep charging! You rock! And definitely don't forget to take the time for yourself that you do deserve. We all know that you are one man team for bit blot as far as support goes; and I'm sure many of us wish we could help out if we could. Anyways, ~kudos to you for being the big man and just letting it slide and not get to you. :)
