I'm playing Hero's Tail, never got around to it until now and totally having a hoot with it :) It harkens back to the incredible first couple of games, almost as if what the developers could have done if the technology was there. I wuvvums Spyro.

I definitely enjoyed the original Spryo game, I haven't played any of the following releases though. What made the newest release remind you of the original? Were the others a let down to the series?

It's almost more reminiscent of the 1st game then any of the preceding ones, although it has all the accumulated characters found in the games following ( Hunter, Sparx, Trina, Sgt. Bird, Professor, Moneybags, etc ) Various aspects of the game like the baskets, unbreakable chests, full ambient music, egg stealers, dragon elders, blind jumps, and all the skills that you get over the various games are showcased as well. More importantly is the Dr. Seuss like trees and rock formations which were clunkily yet atmospherically rendered in the first couple of games and sorely missing in Enter the Dragonfly ( I just can't even finish playing that one for so many reasons )
I'm about 75% through it and finding it challenging enough but at the same time almost too forgiving with the boss levels, the game remembers stages and counters, there is no actual lives to loose in the game; you are just put back to the last save point. Some of those save points are pretty tricky to get to which keeps it interesting. My favourite part of any Spyro game has always been the egg stealers, I love chasing them and honing in on their trail, can practically smell their mocking lil giggle. The first few egg stealers were a joke in Hero's Tail but they've gotten progressively more difficult and actually had an almost satisfactorily tasty one :D
Let down games were the aforementioned Enter the Dragonfly, but Spryo 2 & 3 were for the most part excellent editions in the series. I have yet the joy of playing the new Legend of Spyro series and have mostly completed the gameboy Season of Ice which was pretty good for pixels. Enter the Dragonfly has very sluggish controls, too much atmospheric effects ( nauseating plasticy water effects ), very dark and sombre mood with goofy lighting, asshat voiceovers ( especially Moneybags ), incredibly long loading screens, and a over serious Oriental theme that didn't mesh with the cartoony campiness. It was the first debut on ps2 with Hero's tail the first debut on gamecube ( and xbox I think? ) so they had ironed out a few of the technical bugs that burdened ETD.

I love the Insomniac Spyro titles (the first three ;)). I could never get into the later titles. *shrug*
